mine has a gates and also has the annoying whine

at idle its just an unhealthy sound coming from the front of the engine. quite loud when you have your head in the engine bay. you don't notice it too much when you're actually in the cabin, and never when you're moving

but its never good if you're trying to sell your car and it's making strange noises from the engine...

I'll have my gates belt on by tonight so ill let you'se know wether it makes a lot of noise. I don't understand how a belt can make noise if it is installed correctly......but we shall see.

Does anyone have a Tomei or HKS belt they can vouch for as being a better purchase than the gates or OEM???

Hey off the subject PM-R33 how are those HKS 256/264 camshafts working out for you?

I was thinking of those or maybe poncams but wanted some feedback first?

And which cam gears have you gone for???

I've a GT-RS on board as well and am wanting to get as much out of it as possible.

Cheers.

due to all the blue junk being stuck onto the idler this makes a uneven surface for the belt to run on which inturn makes the noise.

Mines just the normal black one, i didn't get the blue one.

We installed the cams last night and finishing it off today, should be all running tonight and then it gets retuned next week, so i'll let you know what they are like :)

Ok so we finished putting the timing belt, seals, tensioners, camshafts on last night and started her up. She's having a bit of a problem idling but the retune will fix that. Now the cams sound tuff as f**k for relatively small cams, i think once tuned it will settle down a bit but i love it the way it is :D As for the gates timing belt, it doesn't make a sound at all so not sure what everyone is talking about, maybe its just the blue gates racing belts, i've got the black one. Overall very happy :O

]So how does it drive now? Or are you not fully tuned up yet??????

How's the new torque curve?

I've got it idling now so it drives fine, its not perfect but it is drivable (just jumps around down low a little bit on low throttle or when backing off). Don't really want to give it much until it gets retuned again just incase so ill let you know. I hope the sound doesn't change to much once its tuned, sounds very different.

And how's that GTR A-lsd working out for you?

WHat difference has that made?

Certain model series 2 R33's came with the GTR V-SPEC A-LSD from factory, mine is one of them :) Not sure if it was a factory option or wether it was the last models of the series 2's, cant remember now, read about it on here a long time ago.

It's an option.

As for Gates belts being noisy etc, not sure what you're all on about but mine is fine and has been all along :)

Ordered a nissan kit with pulleys belt seals and water pump so im sorted! Guys is it worth spending money on an adjustable cam gear for an rb25 making around the 200kw mark? been told by some fairly reptable people that work on rbs that they are not worth it at all?

cheerz

brett

if its noisy making a wiring sound its to tight.. end of story. regardles of brand.

mine only makes the noise if i have the timing belt cover on. i believe it has something to do with the fact that the timing belt must rub on it

    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit?
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
    • I'm a fan of the JZX110, and the Aristo. Big cruiser cars, and with the factory cars, super comfortable and feel like you're driving an armchair! And the JZ motors are a pretty nice engine too, especially with some basic mods.   The import process, and the need to be able to trust people, and the fact there's so many scammers around is what ever puts me off wanting to go through that ordeal!
    • I don't care for these at all, but at least the underside looks straight and not rusty. A good basis for a long life. Many cars from Japan have been lifted with forklifts and f**ked almost irrepairably.
    • Yes, but it's not dumb or dodgy. You can build a perfectly good boost controller from a pressure reg, a relief valve (looks same same as a reg if all from Norgren or SMC, for example) and a check valve. I ran one for years. Only superceded with  EBC because I could get one for cheaps and wanted finer control.   THis mod is certainly not a sketchy boost mod, provided the boost is kept below the "spin to death" threshold of the turbos.
