Thanks Johno,

recived mine this morning..

Shaun, may be a stupid question, but where does the crank key go? i havn't seen that while removing the stock balancer.

and what brand assembly lube did you buy and where from (i have checked the usual supercheap etc. they never seem to have anything more than grease)

Feedback left also :P

as for Kent, you will notice a keyway on your crank shaft, it goes in there.

it may have fallen out, but this is the locating device for the balancer

Ill post some pics for you to see where the key is. You should put the engine at top dead centre before you begin. When the engine is at TDC, the key will be facing up. Its important to check the key and replace if damaged. For only $2.20 its worth it.

In regards to the PS pump, im using a different model pump, so i had problems with the offset of the pulleys. I therefore, had to modify the PS pump bracket, which meant getting a machine guy to elongate the mounting holes in a mill. This way i could slide the bracket back and forth and get the correct offset. Its been going fine for ages now, so it does work.

The assembly grease is in the third picture. I had trouble finding it too, but eventually came across it at Repco. I was recommended to definately use Moly grease.

Thanks guys,

I checked today and the key is there, i didn't realise from the pic what it was, i didn't expect it to be so small

will check out repco now i know what it is called!

I had the wrong ATI pulley a while back as well. I have a vspec 32 so the shop sold me a R33 ATI because they though the crank is different to a standard 32.

I had to mill the power steering pulley a few times to get it right. Lost a couple of belts on the road and at the track  There isn't any tensioner pulley on this belt so a small difference in the offset is all it take to throw the belt off. The GTR is heavy without power steering. Sorry we had to mill the pulley a few times so I don't know how much we took off in the end. It's very fiddly to get the offset right :D

Can you order the PS pulley only from ATI? What is the cost?

Yeah, its definately fiddly to get the offset correct. I just threw my first power steering belt yesterday; first problem ive had with that. I put a straight edge on the PS pulley and balancer, and found that it was slightly out, so i fixed it up, went for a long drive and it was ok. Its good being able to slide the whole pump and bracket assembly back and forth to get the offset right. As long as the straight edge contacts all four sides of both pulleys, it should be spot on.

Shaun.

Just wanted to confirm everyone got their balancers... If you didnt please let me know asap.

Cheers

ah... what exactly do these things do?? and are they only applicable to high kw/hp engines?

any chance of a second group buy, missed this one by a day, almost cried

thanks dan

ahh 33 s2 - With the Aussie $ the way it is.. It wouldn't be anywhere near as cheap as the first GB. If there is enough interest I would do another. If there isn't enough interest I have an Aussie supplier who can supply them pretty cheap & quickly PM me if you want to go that way.

SS8_Gohan - Not nessesarly for big HP applications, the ATI balancer is perfectly balanced and Eliminates torsional crankshaft vibrations.

Cheers,

SS8_Gohan, they balancer is a consumable item though (like a timing belt/fan belt/ idler bearings etc.)... i am pretty sure the nissan recommendation is to replace them around the 100k or 150k mark (can't remember exactly)

All that info is on the ATI site i think. Im pretty sure they recommend every 10 years for street use.

For those of you who have installed their balancers, what belt sizes have you used?

I emailed a few guys around the world before i bought my balancer (600 - 1000 HP) and they all said stock size belts. Now unless im missing something major the only one I can get on is a PK 4 980 on the AC.

  • 8 months later...

anyone got a spare balancer for a r33 gtr. looking for the smaller under 500 HP. or does anyone know where to get one locally

cheers

    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
    • Not yet quite as bad as what we've seen a Jim Berry clutch do in an R32 GTR though when it decided to cut a chassis rail in half... Still very very gnarly and a great reason to avoid.
