Hey all,

Over the holidays im going to make up a twin 3inch from the dumps back for me GTR, and after searching i have a couple of specific questions.

Now im wondering what mufflers people have used at the rear as twins and where to get them. I want to use stainless ones. Brands and body size.

Id also like to know if and where I may be able to get the smallest cats possible instead of using the big conventional bolt up type cat that everyone uses on a single. Weld-in ones would be ideal, no need for flanges.

Balance pipes. Are they a must? I notice none of the jap units have them but is it because they are supposedly tuned-length? I understand it would be difficult to get the pipes the exact same length...If not will there be any power loss and is it possible that the exhaust will be more droney than usual if i dont have them?

Im in VIC so if anyone can recommend any shops that would be great too.

Yes i know theyre going to be loud so I dont need any advice in that :D

Thanks in advance.

Mat.

Go a 3" X pipe (exhaust shop will be able to get one for you) instead of just a straight balance pipe.

I think Drift (brand) have small diamiter cats to suit S13s in 3" (autobarn sell them, not cheap tho) and due to space restraints in the rear end you could a twin 3" in/out muffler (try X-force or Lukey for these)

hope this helps

Yeah twin 3" is far beyond overkill unless your after 70000rwkw :)

Twin 2.5" would be more than ample, or twin 2.5" that feeds into 3.5" at the most for your setup

Much bigger would just create drone/noise etc but offer no gains

Well since the aftermarket dumps come out at 2.75" it seems silly to go back to 2.5...but I understand where you are coming from Ash as 2*2.5s flow the same as a 3.5. I have thought alot about this.

2.75" and 3.5" Pipe and exhaust components are hard to come by...3" is very popular and I would imagine i would have more of a choice with mufflers etc. I have never seen 3.5 inch mufflers for sale anywhere, the only ones i know of are Benno's hand-made ones in this 3.5 systems...they could be slightly out of my price range...

So not much of a difference. What im asking is where I might be able to find mufflers that are good for twin setups, compact cats, and also 'X' joiners to act as balance pipes.

Cheers.

SMB have half a dozen 3.5" -> 4" cannons, mids and offsets.

Thanks man, that was exactly what i was looking for.

Its amazing how you search and search on google and you never find places like that!

lol or you could buy the exhaust off my GTS4' I'm wanting to change to a single 3" pipe

genuine full veil side exhaust, is 3 inch from down pipe to b-pillar then a short 4 inch pipe before it splits into 2 3inch pipes that run the rest of the length of the car finished off by 2 stainless mufflers

Hey mate,

How did you end up with the exhaust?

Proper twin systems do not seem very popular at all it seems a bit strange. You would think that twin 2.5" or twin 3" would flow better than a single 3.5" due to the pipes not merging.

Mike

3.5" muffler here..

I didnt end up making one, as a Jap branded one came up for sale instead, so I just bought that, rather than making one.

Theyre not popular because to make one is very expensive, materials and time wise...and they are very hard to keep quiet for some reason.

The good thing is that I went from 314kw to 335 just by changing to this exhaust LOL.

That is a pretty good gain. What size exhaust did you use previously and what size did you go to on the twin system?

Mike

I have a feeling that whatever power you gain by having a full split exhaust you loose by having all that extra weight... power only deals with acceleration, weight deals with acceleration, braking and cornering. I know id rather have less weight then a bit more power...

Yeah its a very tight fit.

I previously had 2 x 2.5 into 3, 3inch cat, HKS super dragger catback, which was 3.2 off the back of the cat getting bigger to 3.7 before the rear muffler.

The current exhaust is twin 2.5 all the way through.

I also had a really sizeable boost increase of 1.2 to 1.5 without changing anything else which was ideal.

bnr, the exhaust is really not that heavy. It is light but is still quality stainless with a suitable grade so it wont crack etc, it wouldnt be that much heavier than a regular good quality single with all of its mufflers etc.

I should post up pics. The exhaust is a true work of art by the japs.

And the note is so insane that is worth every penny and gram of weight.

PS: what Jap brand exactly?

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
