Ok like many other noobs, yhis thread is stressing me out. So i THINK i know what engine oil i should be using, the motul 8100 stuff. But what about gearbox and diff oils. Beacause both are a little on the noisy and clunky side. Any help??

whats with the MOTUL 8100 ESTER E-TECH ?

i'm assuming its better than the 8100 X-CESS 5W-40 coz it costs more. also has ester in the name.

i was about to grab the 8100 x-cess 5w-40, then i noticed the e-tech.

i think i'll still go with the x-cess.

Just bought from Harold at Performancelub.com (lub, not club) and couldnt recommend him highly enough.

5x .95L Mobil 1 10W30 EP ($58, last time it cost me $89)

5x .95L Redline Lightweight Shockproof ($99, have seen some places charging $110)

6x NGK Iridiums suit R33 ($77, saw $130 at a few other places)

Saved myself about $75 after P&H

yep he is the man. I've been to his house and spoken for quite some time.

I get all my oils for all my cars from him.

khunjeng - I'd like to check something with you.

Scenario:

Engine oil - Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 (just as good as Mobil 1 and costs pretty much the same).

Oil Filter - Ryco (I know you hate these and I will get genuine next time around)

The car is street driven and never sees the track. The car is not given a hard time. It just has the usual bolt on mods and aftermarket ECU.

I currently change my oil & filter at about every 5000km-6000km.

I've read previously that oil filters don't start working at their best till about 4,500km. So is it safe to say that changing my oil filter at 10,000km is ok?

In saying that can I extend my oil change intervals to 10,000km as well?

Another one - Motul MT90 can't be used in a viscous diff can it?

Thanks :P

firstly I'm no expert...

Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 is good oil and yes on par with Mobil1. Filters in general dont reach their full potential until some use, the oil filter is typically 3-4k. I dont see any real issue changing it at 10k from my experience under normal driving conditions

As for the oil change at 10k, as a rule of thumb it should be ok with a good fully sync oil. Generally u work it out doing Used Oil Analysis...I for example run my redline in my FTO for over 10,000km to get the addatives going...same goes with the 300V range. However sometimes u can have a reaction with the Group 5 oils which may lead to oil consumption...however my FTO has run redline for over 30,000kms with not a drop lost. My line on the other hand...does use a bit of oil.

Anyone knows where to get cheap car rental in Melbourne? I'll be coming over this Nov to visit my family and friends. A million thanks in advance :P

Hey mate, best bet is to book on the net a few days before.. they normally always have 'last minute' deals or something along those lines! I helped my mate learn manual and we booked a car for $35 a day over the net.

Its an obvious answer (search on net) but hope it helps.

cheers.

What do people think of Elf Motor Oils? A mate of mines work has become a licensed dealer of Elf oils and was wondering how you'd rate them against the others (Mobil1, Motul, Redline and Royal Purple)

Hey Everyone,

I have a R34 GTT, which has the factory oil pressure gauge, first question, are these guages any good? and what are the normal readings the pressure should sit at under different situations?

I have no idea if my current pressure is acceptable or not.

Also just need need a recommendation on a good oil to use (which can be readily found), from someone who is genuinely in the know in this regards.

(Car has done 96,000K, normally do 350-400K a week, many small trips, have have a bit of a lead foot.)

I know my car is coming up for its 100K service soon, but I am doing a 1/4 mile run in a couple of weeks, so want to have some fresh oil and filter in there for it.

Thanks in advance

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
