I will be taking the car out for its first track day (shakedown) this wednesday at mountain runners Time attack day will be out there for the afternoon session and will also have one of the other cars that I have built 26R32 out there. Should be a good day. This track day is fully booked with some pretty serious cars heading out. I am really looking forward to getting out there and for a few laps after all the work to get the car to this stage. So anyone that can make there way out there for a look I would say it should be well worth the effort. And anyone that has been following my build thread come and say hi.

sweet! best of luck for a trouble free first day mate.

yeah my opinion of the HKS vs generic turbos is about the same as you. as we both know the money especially in the GTR turbos is that the HKS ones put that money into the turbine housings which has a big bearing on how the turbos will behave on the car. I currently have the HKS GT-SS for my car and was thinking that with some decent boost (25psi or so) and with the level of headwork etc that it should make the 350awkw or so that I want, but like you it's not so much the number, mainly I want it to be responsive but not sacrifice any top end (or too much). for my mind on the 2.8 RBs the 2530s are without question the perfect choice. for a 26 that isn't revving to the moon (no dry sump) then it's a bit more tricky to chose between HKS 2530s or GT-SS. hmmmm. I might go the 2530s, I went the GT-SS on the last motor (granted it was not as advanced as this one and had stock diffs. now have GTS4 diffs) and a change might be good.

anyway, enough babble. I hope it's a good day tomorrow. :)

Just a quick update on the cars 1st track shakedown. The car was going well without any drama's in the first session pullling hard needs some work on the wheel alaignment and will need a brake upgrade as soon as the bank account allows. Off the trailer I managed to lap around the 1.00min for the first few laps than managed a couple of .59 sec laps with my fastest being a 58.9 sec lap wich I was happy with but in the 2nd session coming out of turn 1 I had a low oil pressure warning and shut the engine down as sooon as possible and towed back to the pits to find it had thrown all the belts off.

Turns out it has broken the balancer thrue the middle thrown the belts and has damaged the front of the crank and due to the drop in oil pressure need a new set of bearings.

ouch mate...not good...what brand of balancer?

fck mate! that sucks. what a shame. at least the pace was encouraging I guess, but still a bit of a downer to have to be pulling the thing apart so soon. lucky you got off it and hopefully didn't damage that lovely crank... :) you have had some bad luck with the head gasket/thermo problem before and now this. :) cars really can give you the shits sometimes.

i think he was using ATI. though I did have the same initial thought as I think you're having! lol.

I would guess maybe running the dry sump drive gear off the front of the balance places a little more load on it but you wouldn't think it could do this. especially considering how many dry sump RB26s there are around running this way.

Hey Richard /Paul is a bummer to have pull the thing apart so soon but what can you do Is my own fault though As I had an ATI balancer on back order wich I actually picked up on the friday 2 days after track day so only had the standard balancer on there and thought it would live thru the 1st shakedown but it wasn't to be. Let that be a lesson to anyone to be patient and not to track their fresh engine with a standard balancer. I have already got the crank and rods at my machine shop for a repair on the crank snout and to resize the rods at least i was lucky enough to shut it down (thanks to Ruzics EM PRO2 warning function) that it did not damage any of the journell's so at least there is some good news i guess. I plan on having it all sorted before the next track day so will post un update then.

Some pics of the damaged balancer.

being a drag car i have the luxury to run auto shutdown...its saved 1 engine already. Unfortunately being a corner car you cant run one...so you use the next best thing...an EM PRO II...its just paid for itself. How was the pump drive mounted to the stock balancer Daz ? Was it this that comprimised the balancers integrity? Ive seen them crack through the keyway before but in half like that is full on.

Hey mate you are spot on there with the auto shutdown but not the safest option for a cuircuit car. But the as you stated the EM PRO2 has already paid for itself although I was unable to shut it down quick enough to save the bearings (not much you can do when you get a low oil pressure alarm mid corner when you are commited i guess) at least I managed to shut it off before any damage was done to big end or main journells. The drive for the oil pump i was useing was an insert that goes inside the balancer and is held in place with the same bolt that holds the balancer on and then has the mandrel with the drive gear bolted to the insert so there is no extra load on the balancer at all so I have to assume that it just could not handle the power or more so the torque being generated and just gave up the gohst.

Was the old standard balancer mate I would have thought it would have been up for at least a full day being that it came off a reasonably low klm standard unmodded engine but it wasn't to be. Just means a few late nights in the shed and a little lighter in the hip pocket but hey thats cars for you.

You may have noticed this thread has been moved.

SAU Admin have decided to run a new section for "Projects, Overhauls and Build-ups"

As such your thread is a prime example of what we wanted to house in this section.

We have left links in the sections you originally posted also to allow easy access to the threads new home.

Any issues, please feel free to pm myself or N1GTR.

I run a 30psi auto shut down on my circuit car and never had any issues.

I also have an electric power steering pump and a manual override thats very easy to access should it be in a trciky situation.

Ive had it throw one dry sump belt and that one time the shut down saved the engine.

In a race situation I can see the shut down being potentially hazardous hence the override. But for a time attack/supersprint type car there is usually plenty of space around you should the engine stop. Steering is the only thing i worried about prior to the electric pump.

    • The question then becomes - was there any fluid coming from that hole before you did the rebuild ?    You may not have noticed, of course.   Depending on how you did the rebuild, the possibility has to be considered that somehow (cleaning ?)  fluid entered that hole and is now being 'forced'  out by small movements of the proportioning valve.   From the factory, there's actually a small rubber plug in that hole but with age and under-bonnet heat it's quite common for it to 'go missing'.  That rubber plug is designed to allow the venting process but also to prevent 'stuff' getting to the area (prevent corrosion, etc).   The plug is also not available as a spare part AFAIA. Personally I wouldn't race and buy a new master just yet but keep an eye on the area to see if the 'leak' continues.   If you're concerned about brake fluid damaging nearby paintwork, cable tie a piece of suitable absorbant material over the hole and remove/monitor occasionally.    Operation of the proportioning valve and the brake master itself won't be affected, but also keep an eye on brake fluid level, of course. In terms of a new master, the genuine part is getting expensive, unfortunately.  Amayama is showing AUD900+.   I was searching recently and there's an aftermarket part available from Japan made by 'Parts Assist': https://zenmarket.jp/en/yahoo.aspx?q=BNR32%2bBM50&p=1 Whether it's any good I have no idea, although in my experience Japanese aftermarket stuff is pretty good quality-wise.   The above site allows overseas buyers to purchase stuff more easily from Japan but there are fees and shipping costs, of course.   The original Japanese seller page is here: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1197401228 Copper/Nickel is fine but I still prefer bundy tube and it's also cheaper.
