Hi all,

We have an 97 RS4 Stagea, automatic, and we are trying to decide whether it will have the capability to tow around 2,000kg (a 180sx track car on a car trailer) without ruining the Stagea.

We will be fitting a heavy duty custom made towbar which is costing around 1k.. so we dont want to go ahead and do it, if its only going to ruin the car itself.

Basically, its either we take a chance with the Stagea or we have to sell it and buy a Ford Falcon :(

Has anyone here done anything similiar? and how did the Stagea handle? Any problems after towing?

Any opinions/help appreciated!

Thanks! :P

Hey mate,

Do you have the factory manual for the Stagea? there should be a tow rating in there.. Im not sure about the road rules in VIC but in NSW there are some heavy fines for towing a car without the correct tow rating. No point making a custom tow bar to suit your needs then getting a fine for using it..

Cheers

Johno

search for the stagea towbar thread, there's a guy here in canberra that makes a stag towbar that'll tow about 2.5t and it's only about $5-600 from memory. he has a jig for it and everything

D.

I've been known to tow a big load every now and then. I've got the towbar from Max in Canberra.

500kg trailer, 1700kg vt station wagon.

it tows great. but fuel economy is appalling.

Hahaha, Duncan, it's usually the case that you see a shitbox towing a performance car, not the other way around like this!

that reminds me of the production car race club meeting the other night.

me: D'oh the gtr has a blown motor again

them: why not buy a v8 then?

me (confused): because I already have a tow car

:)

+1 towed a few times with my cefiro on the back.

+1 for MAX towbar in canberra (i live in SA, so got it delivered and fitted by a mobile fitter)

it's a 99 RS4 - as said above - tow's great (even with standard suss) - but is not the best fuel consumption while towing lol

here's a pic...

    • Update all   thanks to the workshop manual, it lead me back to checking fuses as mentioned central locking and door open lights worked when acc was switched on. diagram attached shows two points of power 1. ACC and 2.  Batt with the later being fused (#28) I did check the fuses using a multimeter but I must have stuffed that up also. Went back and checked the batt fuse in interior fuse box and you wouldn’t believe it… a blown fuse. replaced fuse and everything is now working as it should including the climate control   thank you all with your positive insight and knowledge.
    • Where is the warning "That this thread is super old"   I just went into a 5 year old thread, went to do a reply, and couldn't see anywhere obvious a warning of it being super old
    • Duncan is correct. Pitwork (and Toyota's own cheap brand "Drive Joy") were primarily created as brands to sell other manufacturers car parts. It would be weird if Nissan sold parts for Toyota vehicles with a Nissan logo on it, so they created Pitwork to sell parts for other brans Toyota, Honda etc. They are not the same as Nissan genuine parts, although they *do* meet Nissan's standards for replacement parts. They aren't supposed to be a substitute for genuine parts, but a cheaper alternative that is better than Ebay fake parts from you-know-where.
    • Thanks GTSBoy, much easier to work with it now it's free!
    • I _think_ that one has a christmas tree or some other retainer spike into a hole in that panel under it. Come in under it with thin scredrivers and just pry it gently up. If you rip the ears off the retainer pin....so what? Just stick it back down after with a bit of race tape and carry on with life.
