Hey guys this is my first time posting a new topic so i'm sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I was looking at the for sale section and I saw a topic about a guy wanting to make his gtst look like a gtr. In his post he asked about putting GTR badges on his car which i thought was a fair enough question but afeter scrolling dow the page I found that everyone was absolutely ripping him to shreds saying things like "If you put GTR badges on a GTST your car should be keyed and you should be executed". It got to the point where his next post read like a mini emotional break down. A whole bunch of administrators got on and apologised to the guy and then all the blokes that tore strips off him got on and semi-apologised/justified thier earlier comments. They were saying things like "it's not as bad as a GTR badge on an excel", "it'll never be a real gtr" blah blah blah... ect... ect...

The bottom line is I just want to know what the big deal was?

A mate of mine has a GTST that he's built up and it's putting out 320ish kw at the wheels and he's about to put the 3 litre bottom end on it aiming for around the 450kw mark. That'd make it 2-3 times more powerful than my gtr. I wouldn't give a rats if he bought a GTR badge from the wreckers and glued it to his boot lid. It's not a gtr, it's faster than a gtr! well faster than mine anyway and we've both spent about the same money on our cars.

What does everyone else think?

Not defending the people that tore strips of them but their is more to a GTR than it's speed.... i don't own a GTR, i own a 4door GTST thats getting tuned for around 300kw at the moment i personally wouldn't put a GTR badge on it as it's not a GTR. I'll be proud of the car i have not label it as something i want.

I personally hate seeing a GTST thats badged as a GTR, It's like seeing a holden executive with HSV badges it just ain't right...

Isn't there an old saying: "Imitation Is The Greatest Form Of Flattery"

I don't think that that guy would have ever try to pass off his car as a GT-R at the point of sale. Perhaps he'd like to receive the cred that GT-R owners might think they have.

For a while in the early 90s, a lot of E36 BMW owners took their badge model off the boot lid and stuck an M3 badge there.

Remember that? They'd buy M3 mirrors, M3 wheels, M3 diffuser bars, M3 exhaust tips etc etc

Nowadays, they might try and make their car look like an M3 even to the expense of an M3 front guard vent, but they usually put only the M badge on, or none at all.

I think it's an ego thing. Guys will tend to do this more than girls.

RTA promotes the title 'Personalised Plates' to sell more. In the USA they call them 'Vanity Plates' because in truth, that's exactly what they are.

So even whilst most of us who'd own a GTsT or GTT would never try to make it look like a GT-R, I think it crosses our minds IMHO.

Cheers, T

Thing with Skyline owners is that they're an odd bunch that are half torn between purists and modders. If you look at other marques other than skylines, usually the owners are of one type or the other, they'll either restore it immaculately using period parts or matching numbered parts etc (eg: antique car collectors, rare edition collectors), or they'll completely mod it to the point where you can't recognise it (eg: excel owners, pontiac fiero owners).

Unfortunately the GTR is a unique car, but its not exactly a collectable car... its fun to modify, but its also got that certain aura of respect. So what you get are a bunch of people who are purists when it comes to badging, and other aesthetics, but are completely fine with hacking the car to bits to make it perform better etc. Now given that its a community full of people like that, if you put a GTR badge on a GTSt, no one will care if it has the muscle to back the claim, but if it doesn't it will be met with a sneer or scorn.

I don't know about the purist theory... i just don't see the point, what does putting a badge on the car achieve...

I don't see anything wrong with owning a GTST, especially if it has power. Show that it has been done from a GTST, Be proud of what you have....

The badge doesn't fool anyone and thats all it's there for, to tell people what you have...

So what about when people turn a VW into a porsche or the likes??

Personally I don't think you should put GTR badges on a GTST. Be proud of what it is..

I'm not a purist, mod as much as you want, but the badge is a statment of its own, telling people what it is.

Most people here would know without badges at all..

Would you tell people it was a GTR if it had the badging??

my opinion is its gay.

agreed with all the posts here mimicking the "better" version of a car is tacky.

another example is merc drivers who put AMG badges on there car, i hate it even more when they put BRABUS badges on there c200's thinking there all gangsta

I think its pahetic. Just shows some people are as bad as the tools in commodores who put on HSV stickers/badges.

You might have a fair bit of power but all in all it never has been and never will be a GTR no matter what you do to it.

Live with the fact that you own a gtst, be proud of it and stop trying to make it something it never will be.

It may be the wrong thing to do but it dosent mean that people have the right to become animals about it and throw terrible insults.

Bullying and even e-bullying can be very serious, as bad as traumatising someone in real life.

Not everyone is as emotionally 'thick' as others, some are just human beings with real feelings.

Hmm... I think this will be one of those things that I just wont ever get. It's always just been three letters stuck together that look really good to me. I love the way the badge looks in the same way that I like the way particular bodykits or colours look on a car. Thanks for all of your input though. Sorry if I can't see the light. Nissan didn't make all their skylines equal but I'm sure they love them all the same lol.

Does it have a RB26 Dett under the bonnet? If the answer is NO, it is not a GTR

so If someone puts an rb26 in a gts4 does that make it a gtr?

If I owned a gtst but used the gtr in forza or gran turismo am I cheating?... Ok that one's not a serious question...

seriously though, even though I still don't understand why some people treat the gtr badge likereligiousios symbol thanks for replying with serious posts.

its not a gtr unless it came from factory as a gtr.

technically my chassis is the same as a GTR, even though its a GTS4. So if I unbolted all the things on my chassis that made it a GTS4 and bolted on all the GTR bits, would it be a GTR? For all intents and purposes it would be identical to a GTR.

sometimes its more an emotional stance than a rational one.

it would be like me putting a ferrari badge on my car cause it has round tail lights and ive always wanted a ferrari.

its like beamers with the fake M badge. im a purist lol. my only exception is if the cars got an rb26dett under the bonnet. the car could be making 1000hp but if its not from an rb26 it shouldnt have a GTR badge. like someone pointed out the gtr is more than just how fast your car is.

IMO, If the car didnt leave the factory a GTR (or whatever car) it will never be a GTR. I dont care if you have RB26DETT, fact is, it never will be a true GTR, it will be a GTST with a very nice engine conversion. Not to say that doesnt warrant your car to be a good car. I just dont agree with pretending to be something its not. If its a normal gtst or whatever, just be happy with what it is and dont make it something its obviously not.

With that said, I just find it lame but wouldnt go verbally harassing someone over it. If they choose to then its their choice and should be prepared for negative comments from others.

Honestly, just be proud of the car that you already have and instead of spending money on badges, spend it something worthwhile and it'll get the respect it deserves.

end rant/

cause it's not a GTR.. what about the 4wd..

only q i got though.. you said it'll be faster than ur GTR.. however your car lists in your profile as a R34 GT Four???

sorry mate i should've been clearer, it was faster than my gtr. It's even faster now because my gtr now resembles a crushed coke can. A hard lesson indeed. Actually it's not even a a lie, what's left of that car is still in the shed so i guess i still do own a gtr lol.

After seeing what everyone else has said I may as well throw my 2 cents in since the title is "what's your opinion". If some kid wants to stick badges on his car he may as well. It'll never be a gtr but then again I doubt that anyone that would badge their car like that would claim that it is. They'd just be making do with what they've got. trust me I know about making do with what you've got.

I've now decided to badge my parents's car as a nissan statesman, my gf's car as a mazda GTR and my car as a holden astina gts4.

Sorry guys, I see all the points your making but I don't agree. I guess I'll never have the same passion for a badge that some of you share. don't take it personally, I just have a rule of not taking things too seriously so on that note, i'm out.

P.s. I wont really badge my gf's astina as a mazda gtr... all my old gtr badges were damadged and it would look silly with cracked gtr badges on it. :(

    • Nah, they'll do it without a receipt, tell em roughly when it was, that it was cash, youll likely only get store credit, but that gets you some dollars towards the newer better shovel, or other item you need/want later.   Still take it back and have a crack at returning it.
    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
