So I've recently replaced my old HKS 2530'S with the GARRETT 2860'S-5. I was instantly impressed with the low down power. I'm still trying to convert the speed into RPM to get a direct comparison. Because the shop that did the power run with the garrett's was a V8 place they didnt realise the RPM limit, getting off it at around 7,000rpm in 4th opposed to 8,200rpm so the run was never complete.

Now, they were different dyno's but I've had my car on both previously making nearly the same power. But needless to say these GARRETT turbo's are good bang for buck. On the garrett run we had major issues with wheel spin, seen in the dyno also.

HKS 2530'S made 21PSI at 5300

GARRETT 2860'S made 20PSI at 4,300

Can you get it on the same dyno? Just from the corrections you can see a number of differences

IT Temp - 52degree vs 23 (which will affect outright power signifigantly)

Shoot6F vs Shoot6

And the list goes on

That first graph though, the 2530's come on pretty late

Have you changed anything other than the turbos??? Like cam gears, cams, tune etc?

I ask as the 2530's arent making 320rwkw till 5800rpm so there was definately something 'up' with the 2530 run. They should be markedly more responsive than that.

Change nothing, just took those turbo's off then replaced them with new ones. The two dyno's make very similar power, as I've compared in the past. Regardless its a tuning tool and turbo's worth just over 2k are good value.

What mods are done to your car?

And it might be good to get another dyno done showing RPM. Might be worth it since you have gone to this length of trouble.

IMO the biggest difference between hks 2530 and the -5 is that HKS changes the inside of their housing which allows more airm gives slower spool up time but more top end if that makes sense.

R32 GTR's do 28.5 km/h per 1000rpm in fourth.

Oh there is no dbout price vs effectiveness the garretts win hands down, totally agree there.

Im just @ a loss as to your 2530 response (or lack there of), its very sub-standard where they should be much closer to the -5's response

240rwkw @ 5000rpm is no good for the 2530!

Do you have cam gears?

Maybe the 2530's like a different setting to the -5's perhaps? (just thinking what could be the cause)

No cam gears dude.

I think the 2530's are reasonable, here is Jonn's dyno with the 2.8 stroker with the same sort of power line locally here also.

I think the 2530's would handle more boost and rpm, the 2860's feel awesome for the track ect.

Thats a 2530 graph, and you can see its very similar to your -5's graph give or take a bit which is fair enough.

It was m&m's setup from a couple years ago.

Its all interesting :(

You've got big cams too dont ya? (was looking @ ur post in RB26 dyno thread)

Cam's are reasonable dude, depends on tune also I guess if we increased the timing the power band could change. I'll hunt around but I've got my garagesauras power run around here somewere and its got bulk timing tuned to 102RON and brings them on much earlier.

generally do the 2530s run out of puff or blow first?

I was thinking 350kw should be achievable from my car with 2530s without too much lag

it was laggy before with the 2530s, exhaust and boost controller, but i was thinking porting, and cam gears should be enough to help avoid this?

I think the 2860's will run out of puff before the 2530's, which technically will make more outright and topend power. 350kw is achievable wth both.

Depends what you call lag, if your happy with power around 4,500-5,000rpm you should be fine.

Few graphs from here on the West.

Great graph...would have loved to see -7's and -9's plotted as well.

2530's and -5's improve response with a good set of Cams.

GT-RS can only improve with a larger displacement.

Interesting graph comparo Brockaz, some setups have given interesting results!

Actually Brockaz - do you have Gav's graph with the new turbos on it to stick into that?

It would be something to drool over

im about to install a set of -5's on my gtr in the next week or so, waiting for them to come in as they are out of stock.. will post my graph as soon as its dynoed.. our goal is the low to mid 300kw at all 4s mark

from what i have heard, definately great bank for buck with the garretts

I only have one of his preliminary tunes.

I'll see if I can get a copy of his latest graph, which shows the -5's with roughly the same top end as the GT-RS's but with the massive midrange.

I can probably get a copy of a set of GT-SS's running abour 460hp to compare as well, so I've kept all the data and will add to it when I get the chance.

Oh, and the 2.8L of John's with the 2530's is running roughly 20psi.

    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
    • You have a knack for photography my friend. It makes the 86 look like a complete bucket. The 34 went with you to Europe and back. It's special. (we all feel the same about our 'shitboxes' that every bystander seems to absolutely love)
