Series 2 1998 Ltd Edition 33Gts-t Rb25

Stock turbo (has steel wheel because of limited edition model, same as R34 Gtt i think)

(also apparently has a slightly different computer i have been told somewhere, not sure of this)

Hdi Frontmount

Dump pipe + full exhaust + hi-flow cat

Pod

Fuel Pump

Fuel Reg

HDi SBC-D Electronic boost control

Have had all of the above fitted, went for a tune and pretty much anything above 10psi the stock computer did not like (apparently common with Series 2 computers). The power curve went up nice at fiirst, but at around 250rwhp it just went everywhere. The result being after around $2.5k of parts and labour my car is still running on a whole amazing 10psi and running very rich :)

So the next stage is new ECU...

* Attempting to chip the existing ecu or putting a series 1 ecu in - Would rather get it done right first time, want it running smooth and clean and reliable

* Finding a Power FC - Apparently a lot of labour involved in installing and they also require a new AFM

* Wolf V3500 - around $2200 installed and tuned

* ViPec, some new ECU just out on the market, $2300 installed and tuned

* Haltech E11 - Around $2900 installed and tuned im guessing (havent had a quote)

is there anything else out there on the market? ive heard about Stealth ones?

Mods for the future;

* Injectors

* Medium-ish sized turbo

Where is the best place around Brissy to supply tune an ECU, is anywhere particularly cheaper or better than the rest?

Anyone have any of the above ECUs? I know they are overboard for the mods I have but from what I have been told chipping is not worth it

Pretty much any advice or anyone or place i should check out

thanks

Hey man i don't know who told you that about a PFC, but if it has a standard map they come with then you just plug the PFC into where the old computer was....umm labour....not really existant...how do i know this well i have one. and you use standard AFM as well. If you want a different AFM then you need to get it tuned for it. PFC is best bang for bucks along side getting you standard ECU chipped and tuned.

Seriously PFC, see you can find one. 2nd hand they usually go for about $1200, with a hand controller.

EDIT: Chipping standard ECU is good. you don't have to worry about wiring and new farken ECU, was going to be my choice if i didnt find a PFC to use. Chipped standard ECU will give you about the same about of tuned abililty as a PFC.

the only person i know who does it.

Is Sam aka Dr Drift. he tuned my rb20. will prob get him to tune the 25 next time he is up as well.

You send your computer to him and he can chip/motherboard it and put an initial map on it for what you have then he can tune it properly next time he is up.

This is incorrect. Possibly out of the easiest to install, and less labour intensive out of your whole list. perhaps find a new tuner.

Also they do not require a new AFM this is also incorrect information. You will only require a new AFM when your powerfigures (airflow) max out your stock one. which on your stock turbo, you should be ok with.

Yeah looks as if i definately misunderstood that part, thanks for the advice

I guess a reasonable question to ask is;

What do you expect to spend or want to spend???

I obviously do not wish to pay for something advanced which will just be unncessary for my future plans (mid sized turbo + injectors) if I can get the same results out of something for a lot less. However I would rather get something done right first time and save myself a lot of hassle and end up with a better product (learnt that the hard way with my suspension)

I know of an rb25 with a chipped stock computer and it runs like a pig (could just be a shitty tune + many other factors). So i guess the question is will chipping my standard ecu give me reasonable reliable power without my car and still run clean? How many other people have this done with similar mods? Whats the best type of chip to get and who can supply/fit/tune?

Sorry for the vague question but I wanna make sure I get it done right and there are a lot of different information out there

thanks

Dont get a chip unless it is on the dyno when they do the tune for the chip.........Skimp here and you may well blow your engine as there are a number of elements that need to be taken into account.

A powerfc is your best bet for a mild modded car as it will still be there when you want to push your motor further. I have a mate with a RB25, 35/40 turbo, bigger injectors etc with over 400rwhp(Obviously upgraded airflow meters etc) and it runs like a factory tune compared to my Haltech.

I would put up how much u want to spend here otherwise u r wasting peoples time as the all mighty dollar will govern what advice people will offer.......

thanks mate it looks like looking for a power FC is the way to go

I am fine spending up to $2500, however I would rather put that money towards my new turbo+injectors if possible

sounds to me from your answer to my questions that an Apexi Power FC is the best option...

ill keep checking the SAU classifieds, and chuck up a WTB

if anyone hears of one for sale let me know

PFC is the go, just about every man and his dog can tune them, got mine brand new with hand controler from nengun for just under $1000 but took bout 6 weeks to get here, so if you dont mind waiting.

Having said that iam sure you could get on it Aus for about the same, looking at no more than $600 for a tune.

Cost me all up $1600 for computer and tune R32 GTR 210kW at all four, good times :D

Haltech E11V2. The PFC has limits too. I have seen a couple of people who wanted more power have to drop the PFC because the AFM can only cop so much flow. Ditch the AFM and go a Haltech!!!

There are several Brisbane Skyline owners with them and there are also heaps of places who tune them. If you are going for new injectors and a bigger huffer, then larger maps are a must!!

I would talk to Peter at Pro Torque about it. He loves them and has all the latest software and is one of the best tuners in the country!!!

I have a R33 GTS-T Series 2 and it is daily driven. It also has over 400rwhp. I have a forged bottom end though.

mate if your worried about legalities and that sort of thing nistune is the way to go. Pfc are an illegal mod, yeah they are an awesome computer but EFI performance at burleigh heads can get better results from your ecu...

My car is making 246kw at the wheels on 15 psi with there remap and a cat back exhaust, and that is still a safe tune(except for the boost running through the standard turbos)...only cost me $400 for the daughterboard and 2 hours tuning.. so simple and easy

cheers joshy

Being techincal on legality so is your cat back exhaust dude.

you can get mod plates for any mod on your car as long as it is proven safe and within requirements.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
