yea, depends on budget too.

when it comes to bang for buck, you can't go past sony subs. mine was 60 bucks and sounds as good as my mates JBL sub.

but yea, get them to play something for you, take in your own cd.

it almost comes down to what looks coolest and has the best little lights on the head deck ahah.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a few bit for my new system (the head unit and 2 amps) so I still need to decide on splits and sub (1 x 12" should be enough)

Head Unit: JVC KW-AVX810 :P

Amp #1: Jaycar Response 2 x 150wrms

Amp #2: Jaycar Response 4 x 100wrms

Thinking about a pair of DLS MS6A's for the front (I'll see how the front only sounds before buying rear speakers) also I have got to sound deaden the doors and boot.

Hmm $5k.

Image Dynamics IDQ sub

Dyn Audio Fronts

Don't need anything in the rear.

Amp, get something to suit. I've got an alpine, but thats partly because of space issues.

Deck, alpine 9887.

Heaps of other options tho.

AND DON'T FORGET THE SOUND DEADENING!!!

when it comes to bang for buck, you can't go past sony subs.

No offence but I wouldn't piss on sony gear if it was on fire. I guess for 60 bucks you can't really complain though

I just finished my audio install, which I have done in stages. Stage 1 AVI splits in the front AVI mids in the parcel shelf and a Nakamichi head unit. Stage 2 a Precision Power 6 channel amplifier a mate loaned me. Stage 3 a custom sub enclosure from Loftyfang here on the forums and a 12" Peerless automotive sub.

Gave one of my workmates a listen today and he asked me where the sub was, and when I said it was in the boot like usual he said "bullshit it sounds like the bass is coming from the front". I guess it images well :(

I admit I do have a very critical ear for sound though. And if I can give any sensible advice to nizmo or anyone looking to buy sound gear for that matter, it's this:

Take the TIME to educate yourself. Listen to, compare, contrast and enjoy the sound boards in a number of shops. Soon enough, something will pop out at you as the right choice. The first time I went through this process it was a set of Boston Acoustics Rallye splits, and once I noticed how good they were I noticed how shit the Sony/Kenwood/Pioneer/etc brands were. The unfortunate aspect is that once you educate yourself, only the best will do and that costs $$. But your ears will thank you :)

    • After using a protractor for an actually accurate assessment of what is required,  and by NOT using my uncalibrated eyeball I worked out I need a 25° silicone bend from the TB ro the MAF, but, my choice was either a 30° or a 23° (23° is a weird spec), so I grabbed the 23° one from Raceworks I also grabbed 1mtr of 3" straight from Just Jap, I needed 350mm, but they only had 300mm, or 1mtr lengths....meh Also ordered a 1/2" hose bulkhead fitting from fleabay, this has a smoothish mushroom looking head (they are designed for below the water line of boats) that will fit inside the bend, the hose bit and threaded bit looks to long, but nothing that a hacksaw cannot fix if required, the hose will then just get jamed on the threaded bit up to the retaining nut Fingers crossed and the unsightly amount of hose clamps will be reduced down to 4 once all the parts arrive
    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
