Hello. This and SDU are the only English-language Skyline sites I can find. I'm not Australian, but maybe you folks can help a Yank in need.

I have an R32 GT-R and I recently got new tires. I drove around for a while and I noticed that when I go over 70km/h, the steering wheel will slightly start moving to the right, but the car will stay straight. As I slow down, the steering wheel will straighten out again. It's kind of scary. This only happens sometimes. Also, when the HICAS light is on, it doesn't happen at all. This didn't happen before I put the new tires on, but I don't see how new tires would be the cause. The tires are the same size as the old ones.

Is the HICAS system doing this? I had a mechanic check the steering rack and he said it was fine. He's the same guy who put the tires on. I trust this guy since he's been my mechanic for a while and I know he won't BS me. I told him about the problem, but when he test drove it....it didn't happen (of course).

He recommended that I remove the HICAS system regardless of what is causing the problem.

I'm completely new to Skylines. I came from years of driving Impreza WRXs, but defected to Nissan.

Thanks in advance!

in thery hicas is meant to disable itself at high speed

so when you go over 70 its disabling but its default position is a bit off

so get a rear-wheel allignment i guess?

last sunday i ripped my hicas rear end out and replaced the whole subframe with a non-hicas one, i win

Firstly, if the HICAS light is on, that's an error, and HICAS is disabled.

Back to the problem at hand. You had all 4 tyres replaced? Or just front / rear? How are the tyre pressures? Did you get a wheel alignment with the new tyres? Have you checked the power steering fluid level?

As you know when you get new tyres you need to do a wheel alignment front and rear for GTR's as they are 4WD...

Did get one done?

Then check your HICAS Fluid.

HICAS is suppost to help you with your turning / handling.

As you drive over 80km/h and turn the wheel, the rear wheels are suppost to turn 1 degree in the opposite direction to help with the cornering.

mine does this sometimes aswell.

tur on the car...take of and when you hit sixty the steering wheel goes all wobbily. if you try put steering wheel straight it turns left. stop turn the car off and start it again and its fine :)

my mech said easiest fix would be get rid of hicas using a lockbar...so thats what ima do

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi All,

Has anyone found a definative 'fix' or solution to the problem "higeki" raised as I'm now having the same problem as him with the steering wheel turning to the right - it will eventually flick the car momentarially and the steering wheel will re-align itself back to straight and will drive normally?? But it's the scariest feeling when the car flicks like it does...

May need to look into a full wheel alignment asap?

Cheers,

Adrian

mine does the same

i have an aftermarket steering wheel which causes the hicas light to come on during long strait journeys.

my tyre pressures and alignment is fine (just got done)

when its happening i just turn off the car for a second, allowing the turbo timer to keep the car on, this turns off the hicas light and the problem goes away :P

    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 馃槈. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 馃槏.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 馃檹 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 馃槈. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 馃槏 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
