Thoughts everyone?

I'm actually thinking of doing recreational PC building for a bit of cash on the side, so peoples input is appreciated overall good or bad.

Looks good R31Nismoid, except for one critical thing..

"Vista Home P 32bit - $165"

Use 64-bit. It's more than just the RAM.. much more. Rendering speeds are increased - this is really important in a HTPC, USB speeds are ludicrously fast compared to 32-bit - I've managed to get the full 60MB/s off USB 2.0 in Windows 7 x64, I normally get around 30MB/s on Vista x64 and about 5MB/s on Vista x86 (32-bit).

Go for, 64-bit.. won't regret it.

I know Windows XP x64 was terrible, however since Vista x64 all of the compatibility issues have been solved imho. Sure you need x64 drivers, but 64-bit drivers are abundant now with new hardware and commonly used hardware.

Windows XP x64 was a mock up by Microsoft, Vista x64 was an operating system designed to be 64-bit.

As for the PC building, sounds like fun I wouldn't mind doing that too and helping out some SAU members in Brisbane here.

I used to have a computer business, but now I'm studying at U.Q and wouldn't mind a little extra pocket money.

^ well if that's all you are getting your drives must be slow - Im getting 40mb/s on Vista-64 with a WD green drive - not even a black!

Dont forget that was back in March, now i would be putting Windows 7 on and forget Vista entirely

Laptop - bound by crappy HDD's anyhow

32bit wont be dead until after windows 7 anyhow, even then it'll still carryover no doubt... still some life there yet

I dont see a real reason unless you are doing encoding and so on, overall ATM - it doesn't matter much to the common user

If all you have to replace is a HDD then $480 will more than cover it!

Nah, the media player it was in is broken as well

That $480 was excluding HD as I bought a new HD as soon as it occured.

Alright, nearly a full year on, 1 wedding, moving house and all sorts of other crap, it's time to get this thing rolling.

I've been given the approval of the minister for war and finances as she would like to be able to record TV.

New things I would like to add (if Ash is keen to have a look)

windows 7 - only on recomendation

Any new hardware that would be required for that

Be able to plug in Pay TV and record etc.

windows 7 is a must have - so many media based improvments for hardware and software.

otherwise though, the same hardware as before would work, anything that ran vista, runs win7

only thing you might look at is the new ATi cards that now do HDMI passthrough to a reciever (or something along those lines).

Negates the need for a soundcard if you have a home theatre setup. I haven't fully looked into it all yet though as i have a soundcard

Dick, got any photos yet mate?

god I am slack aren't I. yes I have taken some. will find where the hell I saved them too and post up. hoping I haven't lost them. I just upgraded my ihpone 3g to a 3gs and I hit restore and all the new pics I'd taken got overwritten with the back-up of the 3g! d'oh!

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
