On my way back to the office yesterday on Chesterville rd, there was just 2 cops random breath test. I pass the breath test but the cop decided to ask me to pop the bonnet I got done for having a BOV later he also decided to fine me with the exhaust without even testing to see if it is over the legal limit. Are they allowed to fine you for this? without asking you to go and get it tested?

he can defect you, however he can only suspect that your exhaust is too loud, and can issue you with an epa notice, however as far as i know, he is unable to actually fine you for the exhaust... are you sure you didn't recieve the fine for the defect (bov)

That's Victorian law.

They can just report you willy nilly without proof, evidence or otherwise.

If your exhaust is legal (when you get it tested) IMO lodge a freedom of information request to the EPA, get the officers name, number and so on and take him to court.

They law really needs to be changed so that they cannot report people without fact.

Thats why I hate aftermarket BOV, they are pointless and just give noise and you already have the stock one.

I remember you car is pretty stock except for the FMIC, Boost controller and Exhaust, so you probley won't have to do so much work to get it cleared.

I suggest you put your stock cat back exhaust on and get the defect cleared.

Wait about a week or 2 then if you get a EPA notice you gota take your car to the EPA so they can test your car is quiet / meets the correct db levels.

In which I strongly advise you to remove the BOV and keep your stock exhaust on!

All the best!

Well guys i failed the test it around 100db @ 5k rpm. The guy said he couldn't give me a epa cert, since i've dont have a epa letter. So i need to borrow a stock r33 s2 muffler if anyone has one that i can borrow for a week or so i would appreciated.

you wouild need an epa notice to get it filled out to actually clear the defect if im not mistaken. i think vic roads sites it in order to remove the defect. I'd say you may be getting one in the mail some time soon.

100db is mega loud considering you just replaced your muffler. I got 96 with 3" turbo back with hi flow cat on my dual exhaust. I can reccomend a listed tester once you fit the stocker back on.

lol 100db @ 4700 (4700 is the test point from memory)... thats fairly loud so i can see why the officer will dob you in.

You didnt get a on the spot notice did you?

Because you'll be getting one in the mail (EPA letter) and THATS when you go get it tested.

You might as well take this opportunity to put a stock or GTR BOV on (i have some for sale )

And also get the exhaust back to a more reasonable level to avoid such attention again

If its the same as my defect you can drive the car as much as you like untill the 25th and after that date you can only drive it to a repairer or vic roads for another 21 days then the rego gets suspended.

Also is it a major or minor defect, will say on the defect notice, if the exhaust is on the defect notice then you have to get it fixed before the defect can be cleared, go to who ever your going to get an rwc through (assuming its a major) and see what they want you to do.

The fine will most likely be for driving and unroadworthy vehicle.

    • I read this and thought "ah! I will do this scissor jack on the tow point thing!" I just use my floor/low profile/costco jack and lift the car up by the tow hook itself, then slide jack stands under. Never thought about using scissor into floor jack combo :p
    • Well, my new WMI system took much longer to finalize. I actually missed my dyno appointment last Friday and lost my 150$ deposit. I'll be going back in the next week or two.  To sum it up. I only kept the AEM tank from my old setup. I replaced the AEM pump with a higher flow/pressure ProMeth 30GPH pump. I also swapped over to a 6AN low pressure feed line to the pump from the tank. There's also a pressure switch you cannot see on the pump high pressure line.    This is feeding 6x 200CC direct port nozzles and 1x 500CC Pre Throttle body nozzle. All fittings are Swagelok, because well why not. I also have a 300PSI pressure sensor up front.    I now have my Haltech ECU controlling everything. I start my pump with a basic relay at 5PSI and deadhead it. I then PWM a 3000CC methanol Injector to control flow starting around 10psi. The pressure switch in the trunk, along with my tank level are safeties before I ever get to 10PSI, and then I use my pressure sensor upfront as a secondary safety to cut the WMI and corrections in case the injector blocks or a line ruptures.  Wish me luck on the dyno!
    • So, I'm back with bad news. There's no jack long enough on this planet that will reach the front subframe. If by some chance there is, it would weigh 200lb's.  I purchased a long reach jack... The damn thing weighted 120lb's and was massive. Didn't even come close, was still short at least a foot. It was a pain, but I brought it back. Next I decided HA! No problem, I'll get an Extra long reach jack. Well, I couldn't lift the box... It must have weighed 160LB's and luckily there was an open box in store. I took measurement and was still nowhere close.  Sadly I've lost hope and have accepted defeat.
    • Thanks for that tip, niZmO_Man. I think the battery is OK. It's quite a new one, but I'll check. Last time I needed a new battery, everything electronic was fine, except that there wasn't enough current to turn over the starter. I decided to order one of the partial AV system translation CDs from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. That might have some effect, or help me diagnose the date problem. 🤞
    • I suppose it was relatively stock too, the JZ motor handle most mods thrown at them without even breaking a sweat
