Mounted my cooler yesty, thats all done cheering as, was easy as i the end :P  Just gotta get the piping done for it now!!  Managed to stumble across HKS manifold and external wastegate setup to suit FJ the other week, purchasing that atm just to add some more wank factor to under my bonnet :D

ahhh crap i was going to wait till i got my fj20det and then buy that HKS setup, oh well it wasnt meant to be then, good luck and it its total wank factor, looks a bit rusty though? You had a proper look at it

Hi need help with a heater core part....

1.)The heater core in my 1985 R30 has recently sprung a leak, hole,.. and needs to be replaced asap to survive the harsh southern winter...unfortunately i cant seem to find a replacement heater core part for the r30,

2.)however upon visiting radiator places there are heater cores for r31 onwards available for around $125 but i guess the r30 being mostly imported there is not a widely available heater core for this model and none of the mechanics i have spoken to have any idea about whats under the dash of a r30 to tell me if an r31 might fit.

so im going to attempt the replacement (mission) in the backyard but still need to know if.....any of you know or have u had your heater core replaced with a certain type of heater core, i.e does the r31 core fit the r30....

thanks for any help!

It has to come out to be replaced.

My suggestion is take it to a Radiator Specialist and get a core that fits, or they might be able to source a new one tanks and all once they know the size.

Yeah i've had a proper look at it, the place that has it is about 5 min's from my place!!!The manifold is basic in its design (lets face it anything for the FJ is goin to be basic, as they we really only learning about stuff back in those days), yes the wastegate is a bit rusty, but nothing that a freshen up won't fix!!

I aspire to own a TR4A or TR5 some day, I think the yanks have the TR5 as a TR250, but that's my all time favourite triumph.

Maybe when I'm old and don't need 400HP to thrill me anymore.

Maybe then I can co opt Tim down tassie to navigate for me in the Targa.

U don't even have to ask!

i already have future plans to enter targa (unsure when, what in etc).

i have an abundance of known sponsors who would consider sponsoring.

mind you i am not interested in winning the modern category, there is too many hottly contested teams with endless budgets (IE a few porsche teams there had 4 'autoarts' commo utes and 4 porsche cayennes following as crew). not to mention Justjap with their bus, truck, mini vans support crew etc etc

i would really love to do it in a Group C bluebird replica!!

FJ manifolds basic? anyone seen michaels yellow bluebird wagon? was from QLD (built by fantasy performance) now in tassie. the best looking tuned length, split pulse manifold i think i have ever laid eyes on.

No im saying this HKS manifold im buying!! Its an old school design one, high mounting the turbo (ewww) and yeah..Very basic in its design, i'll take some foto's when i eventually get it!!

Anybody subscribe to AUTOSPEED online performance magazine?

Those that do, go have a good read about spoilers etc in latest issue.

If you remember there was some discussion on here about airflow throw the radiator and using bonnet louvers/vents etc.

MAKES VERY INTERESTING READING

Those that don't have access to the article, drop me a line and I'll organise a copy.

Cheers

I had the same problem and was going to cost me a fortune (to me) to fix so i just got the heater by-passed, but thats not going to help you, you have to go the way ghostrider suggested and have to get in there.

hey phatMr30 whats you phone number or email. iwant those tail lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  what do u mean "average"?

meaning that the 2 reverse lights had grimy crud in the lense and i cleaned as much as i could off, but i couldn't get to the corners as you can see from the pic

where abouts in tassie are you? a few get about up here, but not many worth a mention

The DRIFTING & OVERHEATING has SFA to do with your heater core failing, it is a corrosion issue, over years of abuse, having water instead of coolant going through it, it has finally corroded away and failed at it's weakest point. Probably a bend/end of a core tube.

Get the one off RSX and if nothing else you will have something to take to the radiator people as an example, or to compare to R31.

Maybe we can all learn something, if the R31 core is the same, you can tell us, but it has to be exact, because there isn't much space in the heater box where it fits.

Geez, this thraed goes quick if you're away for a few days :) Phat MR30,aren't the Silvia's short nose R200 anyway??

Ghostrider, you mentioned about an AutoSpeed article in regards to spoilers/areo.I'd be interested in a copy if you want. Oh,and also, from a couple of pages back, "Hope all works out, you might keep up with our RB's then" Mate, you'll definatly have to stop in port mac when you get that HR goin! haha :D:(:)

just to add mine has been sitting with coolant in it for at least 16 months, took off the hoses to the radiator 2 weeks ago, which ment it emptyed the coolant out, i forgot it was full, it was still as clean as the day in went in no discolouration at all..

when mines on the road one of the first things i'll be doing is a run down the coast, i'll be stopping in port, as an ex lives there, then just keep on going through to sydney..

    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
    • Does that German restaurant still exist in the old place out the NW end of Goulburn? When I say "out the NW end of"...I am really being vague. It was 1997 when I was last there, and the only point of reference I can recall is that it was on the opposite side of the main drag from the big merino. And when I say "opposite side of the main drag", I don't mean "on the main drag". It was either a couple of streets back from there, or might have even been out in the sticks a bit further. Was an old farm building or mill or somesuch. And when I say "the big merino" I might actually be thinking of a completely different part of town, because I just looked on maps and the big bugger is not where I remembered him to be! The food was good, consisting largely of various German mystery-meat sausage/loaf things and kartofflen.
    • So while the second sentence is completely correct and the whole point of the conversation, the first sentence bears consideration. If this bloke is just hoping to throw big turbos on and drive it around, because there are no helpful facilities at all in his tropical paradise** then he likely has zero chance of even knowing what the TP is on the last column in the stock maps, let alone know whether the ECU is operating anywhere near it or past it. So the point is very very moot. And, per what I said before, at stock boost on those turbos, you may well be off the end of the map. **I'm just back from Vanuatu, so I know exactly what small Pacific nations can be like wrt paradise without requisite facilities. But it's not even that simple. I put a high flow on my car and had to drive it around without a proper tune because of the lack of opportunity*** to put the bigger AFM and injectors into it to allow it to be tuned. I had to turn the boost down to less than I had before, and back off the boost controller's ramp, because it was exploring parts of the map that it didn't drive in before, and really couldn't access for tuning on the dyno either, and so was pinging. It was still well within the last column, because when I first**** set up the Nistune on the Neo I rescaled all axes of the maps to give some more space to explore. ***Family dyno was broken ****This was 13 years ago, and the TIM thing wasn't a thing then and so TP would definitely grow when pushing past the stock tune's limits.
    • Yep, this bit another local owner. I caught it before putting the transmission back into the car, what I noticed was the pressure plate fingers weren't flat and even. It's more obvious with the pull style clutch because the throwout bearing ring was visibly not flat once everything is put together. Nismo should really update their instructions to call out this specific detail. I'm not even sure the clutch as-shipped orients everything properly.
