So I rang Shannons to tell them I had moved address and that the car would be stored in a secure underground car park (of which there are only 7 apartments, we're not talking a high rise)... it requires a buzzer to get in and out of and has no manual override... there is a fire exit of course but good luck getting the car up the stairs... it was previously insured in a garage in South Caulfield (a garage that had no lock on the door, could be opened by anyone)...

so they tell me because its not in a 'garage' they can no longer insure it... its not exactly the ghetto, we're talking about Brighton and it sits next to a Porsche Cayenne FFS! Mine would hardly be the first port of call for a theif! :)

I can't understand this logic... clearly they don't want my 1.5K a year then... things must be really good over there :)

So my question is who else should I call? I have been insured with Just Cars previously and they were alright but keen to try someone who actually wants my business

Cheers guys

Just Cars do a good job, I'm with them atm.

Unless you had a bad experiance with them... Stick to Shannons and make sure to speak to someone at a higher rank or manager and see how you go.

Ive got the same issue Nick.

You cant get in/out of my place without a buzzer - but not can do as it doesnt have 4 walls and a door around my actual car...

I went a bit crazy @ the chick after she told me because i said that type of policy is retarded...

Think about how much of Australia is turning into high/medium density living like this with shared parking and so on and they have a dumb policy like this...

Greg - did you actually get around it or not by talking to a manager?

My mate (Malcolm) had the same issue, with his XA Coupe; secure parking with cameras, etc, parked between other expensive cars etc, yet Shannons said no.

So now he is with LSV: 1300 369 769

Tell them you have been with Shannons, etc.

the guy did put me on hold and go and ask someone I assume was his manager... but maybe he was just picking his nose... I could just tell them its in a garage but if something does happen to it its going to be pretty hard to make a claim, would prefer to not be hiding anything

I'll give LSV a call cheers Al

I had a similar issue, same scenario. I have 2 remote gates but sits in a basement with about 10 other cars. I was insured with Shannons.

Also, technically, it is a locked garage (just houses multiple cars). They will do it and they also did my g/f's mini which lived on the street. I think it depends who you speak to.

its a locked garage... simple as that

they as you to keep it in a locked garage. and thats where it is..

no need to tell them of a change in sleeping arangement.. only for the change in address as far as im concerned, although you may have shot yourself in the foot by ringing and informing them!

They have a definition of a locked garage, and as soon as other cars come into it, that have access etc, is where they get ansty

I mean telling them its a garage is good and well... but if it comes to the crunch and they don't come good on a payout then that kinda really isnt in your favour

I just told them I moved... they asked where the car was going to be... I said secure underground car park... I guess I should have said garage.../fail

then again as Ash says I really would be upset if something happened to it and the refused to pay out due to a confusion over the meaning of the word garage

I just reckon its silly... I'm rating 1, never made a claim in 10 years of driving... bah

Try again with someone else. It's because your car has two doors  My four door R34 GT-T isn't considered a sports car, neither is my turbo Pulsar which is the only reason I'm offered insurance on mine through Shannons without a garage.

LUmley Special Vehicles (LSV) FTW!! Shannon's wouldn't touch me because I am in western suburbs, car in carport, no front fence or gate, parked in city in multi storey "park safe" they straight up said Nope.

I called LSV and they said yep sure no probs, Insured as a 32 VSpec II so they will up the cover each year to reflect the value of the car. I am very happy with them. They also don't care that it not in the city anymore during day and is also sometimes street parked while at work! Bonus number 2 is they are cheaper than Shannons.

All they ask is pretty much same as Shannon's etc, ADR approved alarm and 3 point immobiliser.

I didn't bother with Just Cars either as they only give 10k back for an import if it is stolen and not recovered no matter what you are insured for! FAIL!!!

PS - No I don't work for LSV or know anyone who does hahaha

Edited to Say - LSV also give you Full Salvage rights for $100 = BONUS!

This is a little strange. Shannon's insured my car in a shared underground car park (and I'm talking shared with almost 100 cars, maybe more) in Port Melbourne for 2 years. Is this a new policy?

Mine is actually only "parked off street" (no room in the garage ATM lol). Shannons say ok. I'm also doing it under my NDSOC membership - don't know if that makes a difference.

You have to ask to talk to the manager, not just have the pleb "I'll talk to my manager"

WTF.... no way! Is this true? I gotta ring them up and find out.

i'm still freaked ur paying 1.5k with Shannons for your car. Just got my renewal form in front of me, 750 for a GTST at 25k for full comp, and Ive made a least one major claim in the last 5 years with that car.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
