acumulators are not aloud in the combinded touring series but we are negotiating with the rule enforcers at the moment about possible oiling system improvements that need to be addressed.

At the end of the day if we can improve the system and it means Duncan is at every round then they should be all for it. More cars racing in their category the better.

The current rules are a bit of a joke when these are meant to be "race cars".

Our engine sealer has told me two other holdens from last weekend have also now been diagnosed with engine issues after the hour enduro. One finished one didn't. His going to be a busy boy sealing up fresh engines for next round!

Without 4wd you dont generate enough G's to move the oil in the sump :wub:

Seriously though good point, you've also got a high flowing oil pump. How big is the sump?

Duncan are you at least allowed to have a head return to sump?

no the rules are pretty simple. all motor standard except sump is free. Brad is working on some piece of art new sump to make the most of that. No oil returns. No enlarged oil galleries etc etc its all standard spec

hey there might be challenges keeping rbs together.....but the car still goes fine when it's running. I figure the best bet is a spare motor so I just picked up one today (thanks for posting it down Russ :))

One thing to remember though comparing this car to most.....it runs a minimum of 20min straight at full throttle 95% of the time, 5000 to 8000rpm. Or in the case of the enduro same for an hour. This puts a real strain on water temps, oil temps, oil itself. Not to mention at least 3 full standing starts per round to smash everything around as well.

Its much harder on the motor than 3 lap sprints or even 20 min track sessions - I don't have the option for a mid race cool down lap if things start heating up so this has to be OK to go 100% for all its time.

Thats something alot of people dont seem to realise. Considering its a stockish engine it makes it even harder to keep everything under control.

We'll build something thats just fits the guidlines and make sure every prevention we possible can use is used.

The new sump is pretty awesome with a swinging pick up and multi level baffles.

Reimax gears in N1 case?

Same sump i have with some more baffles (is brad can manage to fit anymore in there)?

No not using Reimax gears. Found something we consider better.

Totally different sump design to yours Steve. This one has a pick up that is free to move around the bottom of the sump with the oil. Its got a revised baffle set-up as well which is simlar to yours,

Has anyone trying machining a spline on the crank and getting a billet gear made with a internal spline? That would be much stronger than the square drive at the moment and with no sudden change in direction like the inside of the gear now there will be only very minimal stress raisers.

We get tricky stuff like that made up regularly at work might be worth a try if anyone wants to donate a damaged crank to trial on????

Once you start pulling apart borken motors it's all guesswork. sure some guesses are more educated than others and there is some evidence to look at but there is a lot of assumptions as well. especially on the internet.....

I'm using anything. motul 4100, elf whatever in this motor since it was run in, and penzoil 20/50 to run it in. Lots of theories about which oil to run too. Either way I change it every weekend.

Well i look at it this way, oil pumps have been failing so until engines stop popping or they pop with intact pumps why not make them bigger and stronger then see if it breaks? Then get into cavitation, vibrations and oil flow issues then? I am no genius but wouldn’t you just try and stop the bits that are breaking breaking. hhhhmmm.

Are the drive gears the main part that have been failing?

Or maybe the crank is heating up and expanding at a different rate to the gear so the clearance is too tight at temp between the gear and the crank so the crank splits the gear??

As you increase the strength of one part, you make another part the new "weakest link"

to try and stay within a reasonable budget, you can't keep chasing the weakest link untill they are all above your power/requirments, sometimes....

I understand what your getting at though, the law of diminishing returns does apply, guess it's all relative to your budget though.

    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
    • Can you also make sure the invoices on the box (And none exist in the boxes) are below our import duty limits... I jest, there's nothing I need to actually purchase and order in. (Unless you can find me a rear diff carrier, brand new, for stupidly cheap, that is for a Toyota Landcruiser, HZJ105R GXL, 2000 year model...)
