hey i had 2 broken studs on my exhaust manifold (broken off rigt in, no stud sticking out to grab onto). I managed to remove one of them but while i was drilling a small hole in the center of the second one te drill bit snapped and there is no possible way to get the broken bit out so that means i carnt drill into the stud to remove it . So does anyone have any ideas how to get it out ?

its not seized in there cos before the bit broke off i could unscrew it a few turns before it gets tight but i couldnt get a good enough grip on it to unscrew it out completely. I know that a mig could tack enough metal so that i could undo it but i onl have an arc here and that would just stuff it up. I dont wana have to remove the head so i can take it somewhere to get done so i was wondering what ideas do you guys have ?

hi, i had some exhaust studs snap off like yours, but was a bit luckier with the drill. While extracting one of mine i ended up drilling way off centre, but still manged to get it out. can you drill another hole off centre, you say the stud was loose. Just use a nut or similar as a guide(and vise grips to hold nut) to keep from drilling into head. From memory I used an extractor of about 3.5mm dia, i cant remember the brand (but not one with a thread, just parallel ribs running the length of it, someone mentioned the brand on another post), an excellent product!. Other than that i can only think your solution is best.

P.S. I replaced all the studs at the same time, another couple of them decided to break during that process, which was in one way lucky cause its not a job you want to do twice!

thanks, i ended up getting it out by ligtly hammering a flathead screwdriver into the hole ..

Another question is should i use anything on the new studs?

one guy told me i need locktite, another guy told me to use an anti seize on the studs before putting them in ... so which is it?

from the looks of the old studs there is nothing used on te threads..

Also does anyone know the correct torque for putting the studs in ?

yea it is fairly common . very easy to get it out as long as u can get to it the ones near the front are easy to get to on the car , dont know about the last one or 2 though .

i use an easyout to get them out , 1 k $ thats very expensive if u dont have to have the cil head out . the studs are about 2-3 $ each from nissan

I removed the turbo and exhaust manifold to get to mine ..

See if you can find a place that has reverse drill bits and make sure its a cobolt tipped one (i think thats what they are called) cos otherwise you blunten alot of normal drill bits trying to drill a hole in the studs ..

Hey by the way im one of the most lazyest bitches cos i still havent put the car back togeter yet .. i was thinking of getting the manifold sandblasted while its off so i can paint it .. anyone know its its ok to sandblast it inside and out ?

and will the sandblasting afect the manifold flanges ie will i have to get it machined if sandblasted?

I have 2 studs broken on my RB20, and i got some quotes yesterday. One was for 650 from APC and the other was 600 from Gavin Wood. I am thinking of going thru Gavin becuase he has done em before and he will replace all 12 studs. Do u think the price is a bit high? I know that the studs are only a few dorrars from Nissan. He also said that the manifold might need some machining if the face of the flanges are a bit bowed.

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?

    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
