Hey Everyone,

Just a quick question regarding my handling as its gettin me a little concerned.

Has anyone had this issue with their r33 as well or have any ideas what this could be?

When im driving it feels as if the rear of the car is swaying from side to side.

Appreciate any feedback guys

Regards

Michael

I suggest you check your tyres...are they too worn? I just to get heaps of rear wheel fishtails when I had worn out tyres...spend the extra cash on your tyres for safety...

I only get that problem when I'm trying to push the throttle through the firewall, I'm in 2nd gear, and it's wet.

Besides that nah haven't noticed it. Make sure your HICAS is plugged in and functional.

Try turning off HICAS all together, pull the fuse and the plugs(under car). I had this stupid prob where my HICAS was not functioning properly and felt like i was oversteering when taking corners slow on wet days(which i found out later it was acutally the HICAS doing some extra turning for me). Sometimes even "swaying" while driving straight on a wet day(whn driving alittle harder thn ususal). See if that works for ya

yeah there could be a number of things. drop by pedders for one of their 14$ checks and see what they tell you. I'm sure they won't miss anything that is worn and needs replacement

yeah it happens to me to, only in the wet and when its raining,

ill be driving along at around 70-80k's and feel the car sway side to side, feels like its loosing traction a bit, and at that speed unexpectedly; its a bit scary lol, especially when you notice all cars behind you move away and overtake =].

I think it is the tyres though, although mine are less than a year old and are pretty much bald...and for this set of tyres i havent been doing anything stupid like burnouts or anything, only thing that would of demolished them would have been doing the advance driving course.

The arse end was moving around on mine a fair bit.

It was two things.

1. Left hand rear hicas tie rod ball joint was shagged causing the rear to tramline when cruising and at WOT.

2. Subframe bushes were shagged (leaking) causing the car to feel as if it was steering from the rear under hard throttle only. On the dyno I could see the subframe pushing forward.

I locked out the hicas and removed the hicas lines to the rear of the car, if you have an R32 gtst be sure you fit a power steer cooler if you remove the hicas lines as you'll find the steering will become a little stiff as the temps increase on hot days and when giving the car a hard time.

The exact same thing is happening to me.

I am getting and have been getting it for awhile, noticeable lateral movement over the rear tyres, only on certain uneven surfaces.

I have read on these forums of that being a hicas issue. BUT this is server swaying and only happens occasionally.

Took it to pedders, they were nice enough to hold onto my car for an hour or two, do a few 'blockies' and proceed to tell me it's all good. (Didn't surprise me when he didn't ask to be paid)

Also on a side note my rear right is toeing in with a few degrees of negative camber(can take a photo) and I am only seeming to spin the rear left wheel now too.

So it's off to a new suspension shop and try to get someone with an idea to fix my car then the diff than the......

+1 for HICAS issue.

I'm driving a WGNC34 and experienced same symptom. All the sudden the car's rear end becomes wobbly, it feels quite nasty especially at speed of 100km/h+.

Mine had some HICAS issues back in last winter, the dash light lit and steering became somewhat odd, hard to describe. Back then I found that the main position sensor of HICAS did have marks of damage (it's basically the lowest part of the car near the diff and can be easily damaged when driving on rough surfaces, gravel or icy snow). The main angle sensor (the one right next to HICAS motor) was cracked on the base of connector and I fixed it then and all went well for a long time but... Well, today the same problem occurred and this time it was very unpleasant. Rear wheels from left to right on random intervals and on every driving speed, usually HICAS comes on when driving something like 60km/h+ but now freaked out all the time car is moving.

As I have to drive daily I didn't have time to start checking sensors or the motor, I just disconnected the motor connector and left the whole HICAS off for now. I must continue with the fault diagnosis whenever I have the time. Luckily I have another working ECR33 HICAS to change sensors if needed. :woot:

And for the record, I have fair shocks, brand new tyres and steering angles adjusted not long time ago.

If anyone has ideas of how to continue with the inspection I would be happy to hear. :)

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them?
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
