Have been thinking about getting a M35 for a while now so I've been tracking / trolling info re M35's and I've noticed that not many people hang on to their M35's for that long.

Have noticed some M35 owners selling their car within months of owning it. Anyway, is their something specific about M35's that's wrong ?

Alternatively, what's good or bad about the M35 ?

Would really like some input please. :)

You will find most of the information you seek within the M35 Info thread and by doing a search for M35.

You'll most of us here with m35's are in no hurry to get rid of them, it's the exact opposite so I'm not sure where you get your stats on people not holding on to them for long.

The biggest thing for me is the fuel economy, the standard ECU setting is quiet fuel hungry and a piggyback system or a new engine management system can rectify this.

Aside from this I've got no complaints, the car is just purely awesome.

Taxi, I have been cruising the forums here for a while trying to get as much info as i can before actually getting one myself. So IMO they are very good cars except the fact that there hasnt been many people that have done extensive tunning to the engine and ecu side of things since the engine is a VQ25det basically being the only car in oz with this engine ... so until someone takes the plunge and does big things with their M35 people are being reluctant to have works done (partly because value vs power gain).

Considering that the M35 version of the stag is quiet unique (not like the old stags eng, etc) and relatively new it will be some time until workshops and traders start offering parts, tunes and kits for this sexy little wagon....

just my 2cents, others please feel free to correct me....

Well I rate M35's like having "Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore and Miranda Kerr in your bed at once" its just fantastic. . . .

I'm not aware of anyone I know offloading their Stags at all. They are reliable and very capable wagons/estates. If one has purchased a Stag expecting Prius type fuel consumptions then they clearly didn't do their research on a 1.8tonne Turbo charged V6 car. . . it's only major drawback I can see is it's ability to tow heavy loads or get a decent tow-bar fitted. . . .other than that it far exceeds any other wagon in the Bang v's buck v's features sector. . .

If you are after a fully featured wagon with very good performance specs then the M35 is the go, M35's along with Audi RS4's Subaru GT's Mitsubishi Legnums always have and always will be non fuel misers but do you know of a large performance car that is not. . .

M35's seat 5 adults in comfort, ride is great and so on . . . . .

My thoughts anyway

I never quiet looked at the stag like that, but it's oddly arousing :)

As for Prius type fuel consumption, I didn't quiet say that (not that you were referring to me). I just think it's wrong that I can watch the fuel needle move like the second hand on a clock!

Maybe mine has issues, it's going in for service so I'll get a consult and check-up done to see what's going on.

hey Scott, do it, they're a good upgrade from a 4 door skyline (they are like being half pregnant :))

I think the biggest problem with any stagea is fuel consumption - they are heavy on it no matter what you do. Also M35 has far fewer aftermarket bits than the w34 ones that share bits with skylines.

Otherwise they are an excellent car and a big step up in interior quality from skylines

Yep that's about the only thing people have had luck with since most of them are auto.

I also used an HKS FCD to stop the really bad cut out with higher boost.

But at core its not a tune problem, its a big heavy turbo car with a little motor problem.

I agree that tuning may not be the issue to solve fuel consumption. I've just settled on the fact that it's how it is. But i'd be very interested to know how the VQ35DE would go in a Stag. If it's like my old 305Z, then fuel economy might be improved. But there's so many factors to consider though, like gearing, obviously the weight of the car.

it surely has to be 1000000000 x better than the hilux slurp.. 400km's per 65L turbo diesel yeah?

As for towing? they are no good? are series 1/2 stageas better for this?

Discovered the stagea after searching online trading sites for Caldinas and Legnums. Hmmmmwhats this wagon. Then remembered sitting in a workmates older late 90's model and appreciating the interior room. What did it for me is the modern styling overall, nice headroom and seat size (I find Altezza's, B4's, Mazda 6's too small inside). Before even driving one i knew it was what i was looking for. Would be nice to get a nonturbo with manual and 4wd (hint ahem mr nissan san!)but getting accustomed to my first ever auto trans car.

You can see the fuel needle actually moving when thrashing it, the ECU must have been programmed by a fighter jet bomber engineer and does smell a little rich at idle. Got a reasonable 11.8L per 100km without trying to hard tho, now on a nana mission to test ultimate economy, will update in several weeks.

Bought this car with the intention of owning for up to ten years and 150 000km as i dont like buying and selling cars all the time.

It is a heavy car as its a rear wheel drive wagon but its not bad considering all.

Definately very happy with it, will be keeping my eyes out in future for a red one maybe with the 3 or 3.5 engine....

has anyone tried a SAFC or alike to try and trim the AFRs at all?

Super AFC will not work.

I had mine at Unique for a day, and they could not get it to work with the onboard computer.

And yes, they know what they are doing, they put a SAFC on 300zxtt years ago and that works fine.

Wow, so that's what happens when you throw a rock at a wasp's nest :)

OK, firstly, I'll explain some of the comments I've been hearing re the M35.

1. They're thirsty !

2. Availability of aftermarket parts for the M35 is poor to hopeless. ( backed up yet again by Duncans comment )

3. There's little to no interchangeability of parts between this model and previous models ( inc Skyline's ) for both maintenance and upgrades. ( backed up yet again by Duncans comment )

4. The room for passengers in the back seats is pretty much the same as most Jap Imports ( far from that of most Aus delivered cars ) ( I'll have to see about this for myself though ).

5. Getting usability from the screen ( MFD ? ) is annoying / costly.

There's more but I can't think of them ATM.

I won't go into all the examples that generated my comments / questions but here's one recent example.......

Anyway, with all this said, the 03 AR-X M35 Stagea and the Hyundai i30 wagon are the most favourable options ( puts fire suit on and ducks ).

His car has been on Carsales before he bought it and after. Just shows that the dealer selling the car can not get enough stock as he has kept a car on his site 3 months after selling it. :P

Sounds like you need to actually sit in a M35 before you come to any conclusions.

But me, I love my M35. So comfortable a great performance with out the need to do too much work.

The economy is not great but neither is the economy of any other 1800kg wagon on the market and none of them would handle any where near as well.

LOL....I think you just threw petrol on the BBQ......but comparing it to a Hyundai :( .......you'll need more than a fire suit next time I see you....I have a special can of race fuel ready for you.

In all seriousness the first of you 3 points is true....point 4. good room but its no Falcadore or Commalcon. Point 5: my whole setup cost me $520 and thats three screens DVD, Ipod and Digital TV.

One thing you did miss is the turbo....the standard ones tends to let go by about 120,000km's depending on how they have been looked after in Japan. Anyway you have my number if you have more ?'s.

P.S. You seen 2007 Muscle Car???? :P

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
