i am aware that this is a skyline forum, but just had to ask and see what "biased" :( opinions I get.

I wanna compare 2 of the most hardcore cars that come from Japan - Supra TT and GTR. for arguments sake, lets say it's a R33 GTR.

No doubt the GTR and it's 4wd ability would kill the supra on launch but what I'm curious to know about both cars on track or top speed racing circuit? Lets say both cars are running 450kw @ wheels.. I am amazed at the top end pull / power of the Supraafter watching Getaway in Stockholm 2 and no doubt the GTR will reach 300kph as easily too.

As both cars are quite equally priced, I have heard that the TT Supra's come equipped with 550cc injectors and it's factory internals are good for 800bhp?? Also I love the fact that it comes with a 6spd box which is another reason for it's amazing top end power.

although the GTR is a rwd/4wd car, blistering acceleration and equipped with brembo's.. when modified to the max, I believe the extra capacity of the supra's engine will out drag the GTR in full modified trim.

of course I'll be using either one of these machines mainly for street and track, but am curious to know which one I would get the better bang for my $$$ :(

anyway, sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get other ppl's opinions on this subject. cheers!

The Supra just does not have the heritage of the Skyline.

The Supra does have the capacity, the bottom end and the stock components are of a higher 'load' for modification.

ie. the injectors do not need to upgraded.

But the turbos are sequential (not good more modding hence the big singles) and it is RWD only. The Getrag box is ok but not as strong as the GT-R box.

Thing is - capacity is something the GT-R can always get with 2.7/2.8 and 3.0 kits available.

The motor in the Supra is square so I'd imagine it'll always be a bit more torquey than the Skyline.

i once saw a best motoring clip where an R33 GT-R and a JZA80 Supra(by Veilside i think) had a run. From 0-400m the GT-R won....but after that....they continued on to the 1000m mark and the Supra nudged out the GT-R.

Well personally I wouldnt say the R33... Just my opinion of them they arent better than say an R32... My oppinon however on that bit.

But I have read a few times that the supra is the most over-engineered car ever built. And it does actually have some fair heritage, not as good as the skyline, but still there.

Also take off the speed limiter it does 298kmh, stock, and there have been a few that have done just a tad over 300kmh, also stock... So with that (not sure of the skidpan Gs) but its almost a actual supercar. So I go with the supra.

However I wouldnt say no to either :(

yea, that is one of the concerns. I understand that big singles are a no-no for street and only for drags which is fairly obvious as it would be an absolute pain waiting for lets say a HKS T51R turbo to spool up a few secs after the lights turn green :(

due to the popularity of the GTR, there are a host of excellent twin turbo "response" kits which give heaps better power and still maintaining driveability which is perfect.

can't really say I've seen many supra's with a decent twin turbo kit compared to a massive single blower :(

smoothline, when you say wrong you need proof othewise...

ui like supras as i used to own an 87 one. the engine is STRONG and apparently bloody quick. i put my money on the supra as far as engine goes.

but for the rest my money is on the 'line... AWD, lower weight...

Assuming hp is the same...

Skyline easily outhandles Supra. Skyline easily out-launches Supra.

However...

Supra easily out-accelerates Skyline once it is above about 60km/h.

If you want to do the drag strip thing, it's a hard question. You can get a GTR into the 10's without changing the internals of the engine. You can also do the same for a Supra, though you require much more hp to make up for the lacklustre launching that Supras have.

If you like to race people on the freeway, a single turbo Supra on stock internals with high octance race fuel is virtually unbeatable, and very streetable too (can just turn down boost to run 98octane for normal driving). However if you like stoplight racing, the Skyline's AWD will pretty much own the Supra.

Around a racing circuit the Skyline wins easily, Supra really can't compare.

So it depends on what you want to use them for. If you love freeway roll-ons, and have the above-mentioned single turbo (ie T88) Supra, it would require an absolutely mind-blowingly engineered, and priced, Skyline to just keep up because they have to rebuild the engine from the bottom up, and will most likely have to deal with being at least 200cc's down (unless they get the OS-Giken 3-litre block). From a stop though, the Skyline can hold it's own, and will be many seconds per lap ahead on the track, and almost always ahead on the drag strip given hp is the same.

I currently own a 200kw atw 98 rexy and am pretty sick of the stoplight racing :(

I want something that would give me a tremendous shove in the back that can also pull quite long in each gear as the rex hits redline too quick and I luv to rev. That being said, the supra's internals and 6spd box will do the above vey nicely for me :)

I guess high speed, top end driving is what really gets me and I believe the supra has been designed for that (taking nothing away from the GTR) . Both awesome cars and very hard choice indeed.

why has no one mentioned the FD rx7? :(

GTR is, overall, a far better car than the supra for _practical_ uses. Using Japan as a guideline - Supras are not successful at circuit racing (nowhere near the front runners at tsukuba), are not as commomly drag raced, and if drift is seen as worthwhile - forget it. So what are they good for?? Well they look awesome and are the weapon of choice for high speed runs - the JUN beast being a top example.

[i'd like to (have to?) mention that the FD is pretty much the only top shelf car that is a true all-rounder - and successful at it - cheaper to get into the 10s on the drag strip, top rwd car at tsukuba, winning this years D1... And still a common car on the japanese pro-circuit]

In case someone is thinking about mentioning the JGTC - well let's not forget that a JGTC supra has about as much in common with the street version as a v8 tourer has with a commodore or falcon.

Don't get me wrong - the supra is a beautiful car, would make a fine street car - but shows its limitations if you feel the need to compare.

Yeah Skyline in general is better for racing, but so it should be, its got race heritage and a racecar look. On the other hand the Supra was produced more as a 'Sportscar' for highspeed highway cruising and smooth (with stock turbos) suburban driving. It just happens to be very very quick for quite a small price.

I must admit you would get a bit mislead if reading about Supra's on the net simply because most of the information about them is from the US. The locally delivered US model has more power than its JDM twin and in general is easier to tune (i.e. before doing more major upgrades, single turbo's etc.).

Personally it would depend what i wanted the car for. If i had the choice and i wanted a sexy, fast and extremely cool cruisin' car (just look at that c0ckpit-like interior!) i'd go a Supra. But if i wanted something more of a weekend track warrior and day to day quick car with presence and heritage i'd go a GT-R.

Apart from that most of what everyone has said so far is true in terms of validity and personally i just cant decide which car is 'ultimate' in my opinion.

I must too, put forward a vote for the 3rd Gen RX7.

In my opinion, there is nothing quite like the sound of a rotary revving its nuts off at 8500-9000 rpm while the speedo gets to the other side of 200 km/h (RB26 included!). Its awesome abilities when punted around a racetrack in standard form is also a very big bonus.

It also looks the best out of the 3!

I have posted in great detail the dynamics of each of the 3 cars mentioned here in the forums, so do a seach on what I have posted in the past, and it should give you a fairly good idea of what to expect.

Currently, I drive the exact 2 cars you are considering...the Supra as the daily driver, and the R33 as the weekend warrior. Its not a fair comparison between the two as the R33 is "fairly" modified (~300 awKw), and the Supra pretty much stock (~230rwKw), but I can compare from when I had a stock R32 GTR and the Supra, you could definately feel the difference 0.4L makes in daily traffic making it all so much easier to drive, and to beat others in a rolling start, where traction limitations are much reduced.

That said, if I had a choice now, I would probably return to my first love, and buy a S8 RX7 and work its nuts off for your intended application. Trust me, you wont be dissapointed!

I hear what your all saying about the strength of the Supra engine (and i think you will find the gearbox is very capable behind huge hp engines, remember it wont have the same shock loading that a GTR with its 4wd drive)

But its my understanding that Supras dont have very flexible management, oridinary std IC, injectors that soon run out of duty, and manifolding means if you want more hp its either hi-flow std or go to the expense of new manifold turbo, plumbing etc.

So basically if you buy one, then they are expensive to modify to a mild state of tune. Reason i think you see so many basically std ones, or the other extreme with big Trust singles.

HPI did a story on Supra and Skyline once and compared the two. I remember they were saying that in the US Supras make some big powers.

And for the same modifications you make on a Supra and a Skyline, the Supra will actually create more power. But than again as mention above, Skyline has the advantage of Attessa.

HPI also did a Supra man vs Skyline man which I though was really good. But still in looks, handling and heritage SKYLINE IS STILL THE KING!! hehe :P

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
