Will CAMS pop a few kittens out if I were to run a sunroof replacement panel? Why you may ask? Current roof leaks and the metal frame around the glass is starting to rust – This offers no form of upgrade to what is only a club car, Nissan can't/won't supply me with replacement parts anymore :)

I looked into this recently for my car. The answer is it depends what category you're in and how serious the event is.

Improved production - no. CF not allowed. rules don't mention sunroofs so technically it has to remain as it left the factory.

Sport Sedan - no. SS stipulates that you must have a replacement panel for sunroof, but it must be of a similar material to the rest of the roof.

Sports car catergories don't make any mention of sunroofs. But,:

Marque Sports allows removeable panels to be replaced by other of free constrution as long as they are the same external shape. If you can convince them that a sunroof is a panel, you're OK...

Production Sports cars might not be so lenient. But they do say that components that are for decorative purposes only, can be made from carbon fibre.

Stuart – Thanks.

Richard – The photo’s are of an M3 in Melbourne, the maker doesn’t have any moulds for R32’s or S13’s. I have a guy in Queensland who is going to make one for my R32, start at $1200 as unfortunately I’m the guinea pig for all the moulding. I haven’t had much luck getting R32 owners interested so I’ll just have to cop the full price :P

I can ask him about S13’s if you like? Surely the Silvia guys will be in for a bulk batch made.

Harry – Thanks. Do you think the lads at Mt Cotton will be anal over it?

i have a feeling that most early 90s nissan factory fitted sunroofs will be the same shape panel. I'll measure up the silvia for you. if it's the same you could market it to S13 guys as well. :P

Yet another fantastic reply from Harry...

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us mate... If only you had a Skyline, we could have made beautiful babies together! :P

:P

Josh, at Mt Cotton if you run road registered class, there are no rules - happy times! If you run improved production they probably will be anal, but you'd have to have a restrictor as well so I doubt you'll be running in that class. Sport Sedans, I reckon you'll get away with it unless this is for the QHC. Marque Sports, I reckon its OK anyway.

When are you going there?

I’ll be in road registered, got a mate who did ok in last year’s Tighe rounds in his rb26/gtst I have my sights on :)

Having missed the start of this year's Tighe rounds, I was hoping to catch a few of the MGCC’s come and try days, but there doesn’t appear to be any on their site Calendar??

Last time I spoke with John Davies he was saying 2009 is pretty booked out with events and clubs wanting it, so I guess next time some random club is going I’ll throw my name down for a spot.

I'd make babies with Harry's old 1200 ;)

I thought they'd started a second series. they certainly had an event recently that was for people who weren't registered for the series. I was thinking about doing the next one of them, but have NFI when it is. Their calendar doesn't seem to have it on there. I might email Robbo next week to find out. I'll let you know.

if you are worried about getting done for it...just bog and paint it into the roof panel. you only get one shot at that though - if you get knocked back for a cf panel there will be plenty of suspicion if you turn up next round with no hole in the roof, and fresh paint on it

Harry, I know the rules are clear but in NSW, even state champs, they don't enforce the restrictor for IP. Most cars run in "SVD" anyway to make sure geminis can still win their class lol

When you get some time to measure it up, can you take a few quick ones of the inside over hang/tounge.

Ive been working with some cf lately, and will be making one of these for my 32 soon. Cheers for the pics josh

Hey Mick,

I'd like to keep in contact or pop around and check out your roof when you've made it. Wouldn't be interested in making two?

Did you get the made local? Or did it come from the USA?

Hi Harry,

Let me know what they say Re: Dates.

Thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

I ordered one off that same dude on ebay for my E30 (first picture). I can't say the quality is great, mine came warped but I don't really care cause its not going on for looks.

Who is making the molds for you out of interest?

Spoke to some misc body shops that do custom work, spoke to Custom Carbon via email as well - They have seemed pretty helpful.

In IP Racing we allow a welded in piece the same thickness as the standard roof.

Cheers

Seems to be welding another section in, is the cheapest - Most qoutes are around the $1000 inc paint. Could be my best option I think.

hey josh,

when i make one ill make a second one for sure, im a slow moving sob though. keep at me :)

how soon do u need it, yesterday?

Hi Mick,

Yesterday would be nice, but much like yourself I'm a slow moving sob. Currently the roof is disconnected and sickaflexed up’d. Had too many issued with water getting under the frame where the glass met the frame – Ended up repairing that and running a seal around the main outer seal and roof skin.

Never leaked too bad around the main seal, but in heavy rain it would start to smell like a wet dog

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
