hey hows it goin, last night was fitting cam gears to s2 rb25det engine and when i went to put the intake cam gear on it wouldnt line up?

it has vvt but i was getting rid of that and run adjustable cam gears.

the cam gears are JJR and they are identical intake and exhaust.

i have spoken to them and they suggested jump on the forums to get some ideas from other people.

anyone fitted adjustable cam gears to s2 r33 with success?

thanks

jason

It should really just slip back onto the belt nicely. If the cam gear teeth don't line up with the belt, but try adjusting the gear either advanced or retarded until it slips back, this isn't ideal as you'll have to remember that position is actually neutral (I think thats how it works anyway).

Hey hold on for a second, don't get rid of your VCT, I think you'll find you will lose some bottom end. OOPS, sorry, just saw previous post by Nismoid. Every tuner I have spoken to recommends keeping it.

I was under the impression you couldn't run an adjustable cam gear on the stock VCT cam from a RB25. You needed either an RB20 cam or an aftermarket cam which isn't made for VCT.

The VCT cam has a bolt that runs through the middle of it, non VCT cams have four bolts on the outside.

+1

RB25 intake cam does not accept the same gear as the exhaust. Locating pin is smaller also

yeh the pin is smaller and has one bolt through the middle...

hmmm well my option is different cam or stay vct?

so should vct timing be difficult to tune with an adaptronic ecu?

thought there would be few ppl with adjustable cam gears but obviously not until aftermarket cams?

dont think i want cams yet...

hmmm decisions...

thanks for feedback!

Yes, the adaptronic can run the VCT and it can be tuned to turn on at any time. Just use one of the Auxilary Outputs and switch it to RPM based. Have it trigger the VCT at whatever RPM you want. Normal is 1500-4500.

You can put just the exhaust cam gear on if you like. You will notice gains from increasing the lobe separation by a couple of degrees anyway.

VCT is off at idle, you need to set the ecu to turn VCT on at about 1300rpm then switch it off again after the engine reaches 3000 - 5000rpm (depends on engine configuration) & switch it off when the engine reach's a certain boost pressure - every car is different and its up to your tuner to decide the switch on and off points for VCT when tuning.

if you set VCT up correctly you can tell the difference.

yup with stock cams on @1250 and off @4700rpm

    • The powder coating came in at $250 EACH. The TRX rims got a coat of clearcoat on the outside only.
    • Bit wet, but YUMMY
    • Keeping in mind that I am currently getting flat 10 L/100km on my RB25DET, which means >>500km/tank. I would test this car for vacuum leaks, check codes and AFM signal with NissDataScan as D says, check plugs, do a compression check while they are out.
    • It is hard to be specific half way across the world...but it *seems* like it might have a minor issue. Is the idle stable and does it rev smoothly? I would not expect any pops out of what I am assuming is a standard ECU, standard tune, standard exhaust. You can use Nissan Data Scan to find out exactly what is happening when it runs, the cable/software is reasonably affordable if you are not planning on changing the ECU (which hopefully you are not with an NA skyline) BTW your mileage may not be that far off, these are heavy old tech cars, and being NA might mean you use a heavy foot to keep up with traffic....
    • Hey guys! Y'all are the masters so figured I'd check in on a few items here. - My engine sounds ever-so-slightly more raspy than the other NA RB25s I've listened to. It's barely noticeable but definitely a slightly different sound. - When I back off the throttle at high RPM, I will sometimes get a pop out of the exhaust, assuming this can be diagnosed as misfire. Some history on the car: - Had an exhaust leak in auction sheet but was claimed to be fixed by seller (bought from USA importer).  - Car's coil packs and sparks were replaced when it was sold to me, but unsure on what the gap is and whether the coil packs are correct.  - A prior mechanic had misdiagnosed a pilot or throwout bearing sound as LSPI/detonation. Had played with timing a bit, pops/raspy sound of engine just got worse. Got timing reset. - Had failed emissions a few times. First time went in as is, failed. Second time, replaced cat, still failed, running rich as hell. Third time replaced o2 sensor, passed. Car still smells gassy though. - Timing belt and valve cover gasket also replaced.  - Gas mileage is... low. about 350-400K per tank.  Any idea if I'm having any serious issues here or does this all sound like normal old NA RB stuff and I'm fine to drive it with the pops/slightly raspy engine? If it'll help, I can get drop a video of the sound of the engine.
