yo all im looking at these 3 cars to buy brand new 2003 models im wondering which would be the best buy for looks and performance they are all around 36-37k new. Vote in the poll or write your opinions on each thanks!

A) Holden Commodore S 3.4L i think

B) Holden Astra SRi Turbo 2.0L T

C) Volkswagen GTi (Turbo) 1.8L T

These cars only due to circumstances no skyline allowed thanks :D (dont ask) :(

as I have a vw golf mk3 for day car, I would pick the golf gti fwd turbo.

There are plenty of euro tuners that got good results from the engine. some reported 300kw at fly with metal gasket stock bottom end. (pfff that all? :D )

Althought Astra turbo is relatively new in australia, shouldn't take people very long to start tuning them to get some good power too.

Oh yeah don't forget to check the insurance, very expensive even for N/A euro cars. :D

I was thinkin last night, give the Astra 15 years and it will surely become the next Gimini.

Driven the Astra and it'll leave a stock S15 behind down a straight or through the corners, no fear. WRXs need to watch out as well 'cause the little Opel's are effing quick.

VW GTi is a soft chassis and is more a cafe-latte poser's car.

Personal pick would be the Astra Turbs. Beaut car, will be a hero car in years to come...

Would've voted for the Astra SRi Turbo had it not have been for my experience with it at the Motor Show on monday.

I walked over to it and a bloke had just got out of it and when he closed the door the ext rear view mirror fell off. D'oh!

Then my dad sat in it and the seat height adjuster broke off in his hand. D'oh.

Then the final straw - when i tried to pop the bonnet we spent 5 mins trying to locate the bonnet release..... we didnt find it.

Pitiful.

Btw 0-100km/h in 7.2s

0-400m = 15.2s

Therefore not 200SX beating times. Around a track, it couldnt even dust its rival, Renault Clio Sport (in Bang for Bucks Motor magazine - the comp which it won - deservedly)

Opel for the chassis. VWs have poor handling and brakes.

Factory claimed figures are rarely accurate because some manufacturers carry out the tests with half a tank of fuel and a passenger. And straight line figures don't mean shit. Its when you get to the twisties that it counts, oh, and daily drivability. Look for an overall package not just power.

and BACKUP, i don't think u can buy a brand new astra turbo for 36k ?? our dealership don't sell it for that cheap anyway... :) (convertible looks crap!!! go for the hatch version at least... and if u want finance, pm me... :uh-huh: )

Thats what I was trying to get at really, that while some of these may have a "turbo" its really only for show and a bit of marketing if you ask me, not really "power" factor. Especially the extra price you're paying over an n/a version, is it really worth it? Sure you get leather seats and things, but really. And the price of the Astra Turbo kicking it at around $40k, there would be plenty of other things i'd be considering around that price range. If its brand new and factory warranty, there isn't crap you can do to it anyhow until the warranty has worn off. So unless you're happy with the stock figures, you're up the creek.

Its interesting how Holden doesn't publish any 0-100 or 1/4 times on its website anymore for their cars, they used to I remember.

    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.

    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
