Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, I've been looking for some rims for my R33 GTR for track only use, I currently have 17*9 rims (factory) and would like to run a track rim at some stage with semi-slicks.

The plan would be to have one set of factory rims for the street, and another, factory or non-factory for the track.

Should I try and get 17*9 to ensure that my suspension setup will not be changed? Or does it not matter between a 17*9 and a 17*9.5?

Any recommendations for 17*9 rims? There are the occasional Japanese brand for sale second hand.

I'm trying to get something lightweight and as cheap as possible, if they have semi-slicks on them (or existing street tyres) its a bonus :(

I don't need them just yet, just having a look around to see what I can afford...

Thanks,

Gareth

Have a look on yahoo, if you dont mind something a little dated in terms of design then there are quite a few wheels around te37 weight and lighter that can be landed for ~500-1k. I'll let you figure out which models fall in the <8kg range though

R33 GTR rims make good track rims - strong and light. Just pick up another set and then use the best 4 for street use and any with gutter rash for the track.

i have read around forums that 33 gtr rims are light and i bought some with tyres on so can only weigh them with tyres as well and they are the same weight as set of shit china rims i have with tyres, the china rims are only 17x8 and gtr are 17x9 but still its up around the 24kg mark with a 235 tyre on it.

different tyres weigh different weights. there is a noticable diference between Dunlop DZ03 and Bridstone RE55s, the RE55s are heaps heavier.

R33 GT-R rims are good. The lighest rims i've found are the Buddy Club P1QF, which are much cheaper than TE37's, but still not real cheap, at about 2200 landed for a set

I've got some P1 QF's. I bought them for the weight and compared to some other 18x10 rims like volk challenge and some circulars they have to weigh at least half as much. Can carry them with tyres on, by the spokes with one hand easily.

afaik 33gtr are ~9.5kg which is getting up there, 32gtr by comparison are a couple kg lighter ea.

R32 are also 16*8 aren't they?

Thanks for the tip on yahoo auctions, might have a look around, it would definitely be the ugly ones getting cheaper, but its a track rim for if its 500-1000 its fine (including postage). I'll start bargain hunting in the next few weeks :D

Does anyone know how much difference it will make to suspension setup if I run wider rims? Ie. if my suspension is setup for 17*9 and I run 17*9.5 rims or 17*10 rims, does it make a lot of difference?

Obviously the offset will also change with 17*9 or 17*10 rims...

it won't cause you any problems suspension set-up wise. and of course you can run the same size tyres on 17X9 or 17X9.5 so then there'll be even less of a difference.

Just buy a set of rotas i have been using them with slicks for 2 years and no issues at all.

I've read good and bad stories about Rota's, I'm not in a rush so I'm happy to wait for a month and see if I can find some old school rims cheap on yahoo auctions that are lightweight.

The Rota's are lightweight/cheap though...

Sorry, still need more advice, the Japanese market still has plenty of rims but not super cheap at the moment :)

Does anyone know anything about the:

"Lenso Project D", "Tyrepro D1R", "Lenso D1R" rims? Are they above the quality of Rota wheels or similar?

I found:

17x9+30 white/rg - hypersilver

17x10+15 black/rg

They're supposed to be lightweight, but I'm having trouble confirming.

The possible alternative, and a little more pricey is Zero-1 Hyper:

http://www.doall.jp/wheels/zero-1%20hyper/...-1%20hyper.html

But its going to cost ~$1300 landed if its still available, they're 9.36kg for a 9.5" rim, fairly light, does anyone know them? They look good...

http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/enkei-r...43-p-24892.html

these are very very light and top quality also, cheap as for 17x10, is around the $1600au mark delivered brand new. From memory they are 7.7kg each which is very light for that size, i think its lighter or the same as te37s.

Damn, they are superlight, I will make some more inquiries that is stretching the budget a little but 1.75kg / rim is quite a bit.

BUT does anyone know if there is any truth to:

I'd say more like 95%, not 75%, and yes they do flex enough to be dangerous and not recommended.

You may see them at autox, but it's not the top cars, and autox is very low speed where it's not as big of an issue anyway. I'm not making this stuff up, btw....

From the EvolutionM forums

If its safer to stick with the current rims I'm looking at I may stay that way, as I'm running out of $$$ anyway, I just want something as cheap as possible (the Hyper Zero-1 I can get for under $1400) that will last as I'm not a serious track racer, just casual fun :)

Hmm, I'm confused on the choice now.

I'm thinking the Enkei's in 17*9.5 or 17*10 probably 17*9.5 because its closer to factory and slightly easier to get that tyre size.

EDIT: The offset of the 9.5 is 38 where the 10 is 18, so I think the 10" may be a better fit. Is that correct?

Sorry, can't edit, my final question is, is 9.5" or 10" better for track work?

Its just casual stuff, I cannot confirm the 9.5" exists as the offset is 38 but I found somewhere else that advises you can get it in an 18 offset....any advice?

R33 GTR

I've done a bit of searching, tyres in the 10" rim size seem a little more difficult to obtain, so I'm going to buy 9.5" with the 18 offset, the tyres are slightly cheaper.

Jesse Streeter can get the RPF1's in at a reasonable price <$1700 AUD as well.

Oh, I never actually asked what your preferred size was for track work, I've assumed 17 as I can get a bit more profile on the tyres :P

Thanks for your help everyone, any more comments are welcome as I'm not buying for another week or two :)

+38

The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 14mm LESS

The outside edge of the wheel will RETRACT in towards the body by 2mm

+18

The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 6mm MORE

The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 18mm

This is based off of a stock 17x9+30 I would go the 17x9.5+18

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
