As the topic indicated i have misfire at about 5.5k rpm and have got a second coil pack that i want to fit. However i only want to change the faulty coil. How do i diagnose which is the faulty one?

I would rather not run the car 5 cylinders red line the crap out of it

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Usually the problem is a hairline crack in the coilpack body which allows the spark to follow the path of least resistance and arc to the head. Remove coil cover, move car to a dark place, start car, get someone to rev it while you try to spot which coil is arcing out....replace.

Moodles2 can you please elaborate on your post. You saying to buy a cable and run it from the ecu to the COMP and i need the program? Where can i download/ buy the cable?

I'm not sure if it will spit out any fault codes cause the check engine light doesn't come on, it is only really mild miss fire but still need to fix it!

If you have an R34 - Better get a set of new coils (splitfire brand). Once one coils starts to fail the others will not be too far behind.

Best get a new set it will save you hassle especially if you drive far from home alot.

This only applys if you still have the stock ECU. Your Skyline has a fuse box under the steering wheel, inside is the Consult port (aka diagnostic port). With a Consult USB cable (http://ecutalk.com/interface.aspx) you can connect a PC or laptop and read sensor values, do active tests etc as long as you have PC software like OBD ScanTech (free) or Nissan DataScan (commercial), this is a screen shot of Nissan DataScan (commercial version not the cut down evaluation version) with the page to cut off spark to cylinders, effectively disabling them.

the problem with using the consult method is it isn't that reliable for what he wants to find out. at idle the weak coil may be firing fine and simply switching of cylinders won't find the dodgy coil.

swapping the coils out 1 by 1 will give the most accurate results, however if more than 1 coil is failing then it won't help much.

also, before you start swapping coils around, how old are you plugs, what gap are they, what heat range and what type are they? if you plugs are getting old and worn then they may be the problem and not the coils. in my case when i had a missfire it was caused by the plugs and not the coils.

far out i'm confused! lol yer well tonight i'm gonna pull it all apart and see wats happening under there

Only problem is that it doesn't constantly miss! Last night on the way home it was running fine on full bost and the the red line, but the day before it was missing!

is the r33 series 1 coil pack the same as the series 2?

Edited by P1OTR
s1 has a seperate ignitor pack (same as r32). series 2 have it built into the coils (same as r34).

Thats right, I put r32 gtr coils in mine wen I had a miss. But does that mean all rb26 coilpacks are the same? or will the r33gtr ones be like the series 2 coils?

so in short i can't put an series 2 coil in a series 1?

nah man u cant, they simply wont ignite.there will b no connection.

series 2's hav their own igniters on each coil pack but a series one only has the one firing up all 6

the r33 gtr coils i have seen were like the s1 and r32, but i don't know what year series gtr it was.

ah true,,how many series 33gtrs are there? and wat r the differences

I have a set of s1 coils somewhere, what side of town are you Peter.

hey, he's mate of mine, he's down Narre side.

Ey Piotr,i got 4 good spare coils if u need, but if ur closer Madbung, go ahead

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
