Advise Needed Please - What Do I Go For?

Hello,

Please be patient cause I don't know too much about all this...

Getting confused between which fuel control to go for.....

Reading up about Power FC's and SAFC and AFC's etc and it's confused the crap out of me...

Which is the best one to go for to suit my RB25DET Neo motor.

PowerFC = full replacement computer

SAFC = p!ggyback computer that works with standard computer

If all you want is to tune your air/fuel ratio to a safe level, the Apexi SAFC will suit your needs...

I'd recommend paying the extra for a full replacement computer, such as a PowerFC ;) It gives much more tuning ability.

If I run the Power FC, is the standard computer still plugged in too?

P.S. Don't laugh.....

No Power FC replaces the factory ecu.

If you don't plan on upgrading your turbo or other significant modifications, the SAFC will suit you fine. Tuning is cheap too.

So what runs the gearbox and all the other parts in the car if the standard ECU isn't used?

A manual transmission has no electronic control. AT have there own independant system.

Power FC's are designed for manual transmission cars as there is a bit of trickery involved with the way an AT cars ecu behaves during shifts

The Power FC is a drop in replacement and retains factory functionality.

As other people have mentioned- nistune is a good way to go. Cheaper than power FC and uses the standard ECU with a p1ggyback board (Programmable EEPROM) to change fuel maps and ignition timing.

Beware that when you start considering something like nistune or power fc, tuning is expensive ~$600+

If you plan on keeping your neo relatively stock ~190rwkw go the SAFC, otherwise nistune it

Since mines an auto, what's the best option for me?

I've got a hi-stall too so I don't want it not shift properly.... ;)

Not sure how nistune copes with autos (Someone please confirm)

Definately takes the power fc out of the question

As i said:

-If you plan on keeping your car relatively stock (Boost, exhaust, intake) the SAFC is good cheap upgrade

-If you are chasing more performance (Upgrade turbo, etc.) Then the nistune will give you the best gains and future flexibility

Thanks for telling me about this Nistune....

I guess a lot of peeps have this kind of issue.

All I want is my car to be street reliable, I've

got a bigger turbo, running some boost and a 2.2 hi-stall.....

It goes well now but I guess this is the next/last step.....

Just looking through the forums and it seems a few people with autos have installed nistune with a high degree of success.

I would make 100% that it is safe, you don't want to put unnecessary load on your auto.

The fact that you have a bigger turbo and are planning on a few mods suggests that the nistune option is a winner provided you won't have issues with your auto

Adam, R33 are not compatible with NisTune without going to a Z32 ECU... R34 and R32 are.

Nistune fitted and Tuned at Status is 750 going by what Trent said in a thread, best to call him and confirm, as prices could of changed.

Second hand SAFC 2 is what? 250, + wiring + tuning assuming 500ish for install and tune, then it is easily defected, where a NisTune isn't... Things starting to look a little different now?

SAFC: bends AFR's on a few points.

NisTune: AFR's, timing, limits etc can all be adjusted.

    • Took a little trip  went to nismo hoping the get my fuel tank hoses and unfortunately they told me they didn’t have stock luckily I was able to go to a Nissan parts store and they were able to order them in for me  then can home and cleaned the tank with some degreaser and fitted the new hoses before putting it back in the car 
    • 100% I’ll hack into the 33. Strap a turbo onto the RB25DE and/or put the 25 head on a 30 block. 33 passed in cos the reserve was too high. I’ll try lowballing it again and negotiate. Aim is to have it landed and on the road for under 15k, then spend the same amount on top in mods.
    • It's generally best practise to run 1x run without VCT enabled, then 1x run enabled till redline. Overlay the two torque graphs and you'll find the desired RPM to turn off VCT. Sometimes, it might be even worthwhile turning off VCT earlier control torque/cylinder pressure and using VCT purely to spool the turbo.
    • They sell them in Malaysia for about $4
    • First time I ever have issues with Amazon, but my wife often tells me to keep an eye out for fakes. It finally got me. I wrapped up the conversation with Gates. The gentlemen I was talking to seemed to hate his job but the response time on their technical support is outstanding. He stated that the hose is marked with some variation of "SAE J30R10" but that if you only purchase a 1 foot length like I did, it is possible to get a cut between markings and have a blank hose. To no ones surprise, he stated the swelling and "gummyness" isn't normal and to replace/buy from somewhere else (He mentioned NAPA). I'll toss a small end of the new one in gas for a few days before pulling the hanger out again, just to be safe.  Hose should arrive Monday. For those running multiple pump in tank hangers, you know the joys of getting them out and back in. I'm surprised I haven't destroyed my level float yet.  Lastly once I wrap all of this up, I'm planning on hitting the dyno again in 2 weeks while I'm on vacation. I realized recently that my VCT is set to turn off at 5000RPM. I'm surprised it wasn't increased while I was on the dyno last. I'm expecting I can increase it to ~6500RPM, if not more. Should hopefully get another 15-20kw out of it. I also want him to revisit my knock thresholds. I'm occasionally getting false knock around 3000rpm.
