Just like nick33, what is it exactly that you're not happy with-people fitting the part or the actual part?

What sort of difference have you noticed?

Also, since you've got the 996turbo, have you had to do any gearbox upgrades after all the hp upgrades to these Porsches?

I know there's a place in Melbourne who sell sandwich plates for porsches and they seem to be popular, but being a Porsche I'd assume the stock gearbox is fairly bulletproof

that isn't to take anything away from the marvelous car that the gtr is, but to me it is too cold and clinical and doesn't have the emotion that other supercars do. for me the r35 doesn't get the bloody flowing like other supercars do. for me other supercars have something about them that gets to some primal part of you and makes you ignore all other flaws that the car may have, even if there is lots of them.

I agree with this - I have not driven an R35 so not really a qualified comment but from all reports it doesn't have that edge that the more expensive super/hyper/whatevercars have. I like the idea of cars that bite, and must be treated with respect and driven with a combination of ability and what the engineers have made available to you.

At the end of the day a faster lap time through the use of technology is just bragging rights, where as extracting what you can, with your abilities, out of what's available to you, on your own just you and the car is where the true enthusiast likes to be, irrespective of the resultant lap time.

trust me, a talented driver will go quicker than a hack no matter whether we are talking R35s or a F40 LM. sure the gap may be smaller but there will always be a gap between the guys with talent and the guys with less talent...

Well if you had driven one you would know the above isnt correct.

GTR is fast, involving, and tricky on the limit - and I have tracked plenty - R35, 997, Gallardo (yet no current Faz unfortunately).

Dont live off the opinions of Jeremy Clarkson and co, not only are they often inaccurate, it also means you stick up for Range Rovers, and we all know how good they are :P

ive driven lots and nearly ended up buying an r35 last friday. the R35 is great but it is lacking one thing..... it'll be too reliable to be a supercar lol, but seriously it doesn't feel as special as a real supercar even though it may be better 90% of the time. I'm sure Nissan will keep improving the car, and they have raised the bar for the rest of the supercar world. All i can expect is cars from now on will start becomming even more crazy than they are now.

What is this special you speak of?

Sorry, I dont get it. I like fast cars, so I suppose each to their own

your not happy with the product or the way its been installed?

looks good from the pics but hard to tell without having a close look I guess

How much gain from changing exhausts, I would have thought the standard system was already pretty good on a GT2?

The pic as shown is the new Akaprovic system currently in transit. The system I will be replacing is the Cargraphic headers & Cats. The problem sits in several areas.

1. Quality. Welding quality (MIG) is very poor.

2. Angle between flange to Turbo vs pipe to muffler was wrong. I cut the cat in two pieces then TIG welded the cat back together at the correct angle (right hand cat only)

3. Sensor @ cat discharge set at wrong angle. Fouling against motor plate

4. Clearance between flange (Cats) to Turbo & cat not appropriate. Needed to reduce stud lengths.

I do ALL my own install work with support/guidance of a local Porsche tech. I could afford to have someone do it for me, but I get more pleasure & satisfaction doing it myself (with tech support). The quality of the Akrapovic system looks to be far superior.

Most of the performance gain comes with changing the cats (less back pressure) The OEM cats are either 600 or 400 cell (honestly I forget). See the difference in the pics below.

And for the record. …In my working life I started as an apprentice Fitter & Turner. After gaining my trade qualification I went back to school (night school) to get an Engineering Degree and in more recent times an MBA. If I was smarter I would have stayed at school longer and taken the easier path, but that’s life. Remember money has absolutely nothing to do with happiness. Happiness (at least for me) is family, health & friends….& cars.

Poor welding, note have cut thru weld at blue mark, about to set (rotate) at correct angle & reweld.

Those cats 100CPi will no longer be emissions compliant so why bother? You could have saved a few thousand and made up some cat delete pipes and retained the stock system for the same/similar power

We fitted a Fabspeed Cayenne TT system as part of a build last week, and its was absolutely dreadful in quality and execution. A real nice way of putting $4500 AUD in a pile and putting a match to it ;)

Akro gear is generally nice.

i agree... the best cars are the ones that dont have traction control, automatic gearboxes, flappy paddles, yaw control, abs, dampening control etc. etc.

all driver controlled, AE86 FTW!!!

the r35 just doesnt grab my attention, you cant lift the bonnet and go "whoa!" its all crammed in there, it looks messy, the interior is horrid, the dash is enourmous as is the steering wheel... ive not ever driven one or even sat in one... ive seen 2 driving and 4 in the flesh and they just dont have a wow factor that makes me want to know more about it... it has about as much gravity to me as a golf r32... i have no doubts that they are not an exhilarating drive and plenty fast.. just not my thing.... and they need better colours.. they just look dull and ordinary.

the Nismo GTR is about the only one that ive given any attention to.

WTF is with that flange??? fark me!!! my dog can chew neater than that!

Agreed!

I also agree with almost everything in Marc's post, but won't requote it for the sake of staying on topic.

Boy that flange is terrible isn't it...my eBay spec pipes have had better welding and cutting. Shouldn't affect it too much but it's not pretty!

Also on topic of emissions even if the 100 cells don't pass emissions its better to have a cat than no cat at all, atleast for the police who just take a peek without gas analysing.

wow the cats bolt straight onto the exhaust housings hey... the stock system does look much higher quality... even most japanese a/m parts are designed and welded better than that

thanks for posting, interesting to see underneath the Porkas clothes, not a lot of room back there and you can see from the first pic how much is hanging out past the back wheels... amazing they get them to handle so well

Well my R35 doesnt have any of that except the flappy paddles because I can turn off the VDC, change gears manually, pull the abs fuse and leave my dampers in one setting! Why would I do all that? Dunno, prob the same reason I turn my colour on my new LCD flat screen right off and watch in black and white.....

But seriously, you can dumb most modern cars right down to an "unassisted" level as most manufacturers, (short of mercedes benz and a couple others), allow you to using in-car controls. I see it as the best of all worlds....

whats an lcd flat screen??

youre not watching your r35 though... youre driving it... thats why you would turn it all off... so that YOU the driver are the one responsible for the cars actions.... all of them...

youre not the guy hand fabricating delicate parts.... youre the guy standing next to a production machine pressing a button and letting it do most of the work.

Pretty poor from Cargraphic, I would have expected something a lot better considering the reputation of the company and the price of the gear. Have you spoken with them about it, or their Australian distributor?

But that's my point. You are free to do that if you choose so that when you're in the relative safety of the racetrack you can set all your assistance off and enjoy driving in it's purest sense but then when you revert back to the real world such as residential streets, slippery narrow hills roads, icy regions etc etc you can go back to having whatever assistance you deem necessary. A locked brake results in you running wide in a corner on a racetrack. A locked brake on a winding public road will put you directly into the path of an oncoming car. The "best" cars are ones that allow you the freedom to choose what levels of assistance you would like depending on your circumstances.

true... but if you dont have the option... then you just have to man up and take control.... or be like me and smack into a gutter and total your front suspension.... much cheaper to replace my front end at least. no amount of technology could have brought it back.. it happened so quick.

    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
