Myself and a few friends are driving from Perth to Brisbane come Boxing Day, which means we'll miss out on The Return of the King premier in Perth. We'll be in Melbourne early January, so where would be the best cinema to watch ROTK. Would the THX certified theatre you guys have be a contender?

I'd like to hear positive experiences about what you would consider the best cinema. Base them on merits like size of screen, quality of audio (clarity, loudness, supporting SDDS, etc) and decent seating. I'll need to know the name of the complex and the cinema number itself.

Thanks!

geez.. you're picky! Most are pretty good to be honest - the days of the shitty cinema are dying. I have been to most when i was living in Melbourne - Chadstone is fairly good. Um, Casino is good because you have smaller amount of seats and its nice raised seating so you generally always get a good view.

yeah, or jam factory. Rivoli is awesome for the character of the place, and goes back 70 years or something i think. Very Art Deco.

the jam factory is suppsoed to be the best in aust or something isnt it

The are meant to be the best yes. But parking is a pain in the ass. And at this stage good luck for getting tickets there for LOTR3 on boxing day. Id suggest you'd have bucklies hope.

But as stated - Casino, Chaddy, Sthland - there all good.

Yeah, I am picky :D. Not all cinemas are created equal, even new ones! Theres a Hoyts close to my house which is fairly new, has a cinema with a huge screen and stadium seating, but it always sounds like its a few dB lower than it should be. Irks me no end, watching a movie and having to listen hard in the quiet bits and not having the bass hit you like it should.

Anyway, Jam Factory has 2 nominations now. Everyone else feel its the best around?

oh yeah, if you go down Jam Factory at night you might get defected as its defect central.. although being a westerner might get away with.

I saw TT at the Burke Street cinemas last year (CBD). If you go during the day you should be able to get a session. Otherwise just go the next day and its half the amount of people.

i've reserved a whole bay (28 seats) for LOTR on boxing day at crown, I'll tell you how it is when I see it. I've seen Animatrix at Jam Factory, and that was just AWEEEESOME! Crown and Jam factory are supposed to be like the best, so when I see it, I should be able to give you a comparison.

Snowman, getting tickets shouldn't be a problem. We'll only be arriving in Victoria on the 3rd of January, so no opening day rush to worry about.

predator, the 'line stays in the garage. We'll be travelling by Cherokee and Patrol and it'll pretty hard to get those defected. :D.

funkymonkey, a comparison between Jam Factory and Crown would be interesting. We're staying a night at Crown, so it'd be convenient if its cinema's where up to scratch. I don't mind travelling to find the best cinema though!

some of the guys here were gonna go watch it at the drive ins, but you really need THX to appreciate LOTR, like starwars and matrix...I'd say public it to jam factory and you'll have a blast, if you need to drive, go for crown.

If you want to treat yourself, go Gold Class.

Knox is meant to be the largest cinema complex, but the last time we went to see a movie there, we had to wait a few hours to be able to get tickets, and then we got stuck right up the front row.

(Also located in defect central)

Never had a problem with Dandenong cinemas, clean, comfortable, and hardly used!

We went to see Matrix Reloaded the day it came out, and there were maybe 15 other people in the cinema.

A couple of websites that might helpp you decide are

You can also pre-book tickets online so that you won't miss out.

:D

cinema at casino = to many tossers

jam factory is good, parking in jam factory car park, wont get defect as you wouldnt really be cruising down chappel to get there (not if ur coming from northern suburbs )

I'd say go to Hoyts LaPremiere at Chaddie if you want comfort and picture/sound quality...

Gold class has much more comfy seating, but the screens are too small....

In La Premiere, there is a seperate section with much larger seats (very comfy), and u get all the popcorn, softdrink u want. Anyway my point being is that there is a section at the back of one of the larger cinema's, a screen more than double that of a gold class cinema.

in my opinion, cinemas at casino are no good - too smalll!

go to one of the newer ones like knox or in my opinion the new Anderson Cinemas in richmond are the best I have been to yet!

and if u watch a late night one u can hear the music coming from adjoining nightclubs

    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
