Heya,

So I had my rims changed the other day and with it a wheel alignment done. My car has been pulling really badly to the left.

Apparently there are 3 options in aligning each wheel but my R34 only allows one because of the suspension set up, which apparently you have to spend $ to have it changed. Is this right?

Once the alignment was done it was better but still pulls left noticably. They said it was also due to the poor quality tyres I have. I trust this mechanic but this is kind of annoying :D

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Thanks

c

I am assuming they are referring to camber, castor and toe (which I would say either the toe or castor is out). Most cars will need to get a wheel alignment every now and again. My car has done this is the past but is usually fixed by a wheel alignment. I also think he means that with the standard set-up there is not much adjustment to be made hence why he might not be able to fix the problem. Without getting adjustable everything its hard to get it perfect.

Not sure how bad yours it...maybe something is actually broken and that's why it pulls to the left?

Hey Charli.

Camber and Castor are not adjustable standard. Look up adjustable camber arms and castor rods and you'll see that they do cost a bit.

Having said that, if adjusting toe (standard on all cars) doesn't fix you're problem then either something is broken or the bushes are worn. I'm guessing bushes are worn so you're probably better off getting adjustable stuff anyway.

Or you could (relatively cheaply) just buy the adjustable camber/castor kits from Whiteline - from everything I've read adjustable arms/rods lead to more issues in getting a perfect alignment (you need a really good shop) and cost more money, and are often defectable (rose joints) whereas adjustable eccentric bushes/etc do not suffer from these issues

I had a similar situation where my car (also a '00 R34) was pulling to the left, took it in for an alignment, but they said the issue was caused by a bad bush which was replaced and all ok..

I recall them telling me if the car is consistently pulling to one side it may not be an alignment issue if it makes no difference to the pulling whether you're braking, accelerating, cruising, doing mad drifts, etc.

Most mechanics could tell me that a watermelon is a suspension component and I'd smile and nod, though.

skylines have adjustable camber standard via eccentric bolts, just not alot, only enough to deal with stock heigh really.

This ^^ i did this because my cars low, and went n got camber+toe adjustable arms for the rear to get wrid of my tire chewing problem.

But first take it somewhere like pedders, if there is something broken they'll find it, might be expensive and "mainstream" but they do good work, and good allignments.

True. Forgot about that.

Whiteline stuff is a fair bit when it's all fitted too though. Probably better for a road car. I have it on my car at the moment but I'm going to rose joint stuff.

Thanks everyone, will investigate more... hopefully it will just be the bushes... the car isn't that old (km wise).

The steering improved a lot when they did the alignment but just not fully, it only pulls a bit now. Could it be partly because of the completely useless tyres they put on the car when it's imported? Or is that just fib?

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
    • Look at @Kinkstaah's thread on the issue.
