Hey all

Since ive lost my licence for 6 months ive decided to start modding my 1996 R33 gts25t a bit more.

Current Mods are:

3 Inch Exausht from Turbo

Apexi Pod Filter

Front Mount intercooler

Aftermarket Radiator

38mm Tial Wastegate

Have got the following but not installed yet:

SAFC2

RSM

HKS EVC-S

Nismo Fuel Pump

Nismo FPR

Splitfire Coilpacks

Nismo Strut Brace

I would like to achieve around 220 - 230kw at the rear wheels and after searching and looking through various results that others have got and the RB25det Turbo Upgrade Thread I noticed that some people have high flowed their stock turbos and using stock injectors and afm with safc2 they have made any where between 200kw - 230kw.

Questions are:

1.I thought that the stock injectors and afm would have been maxed out at 230kw? I ask this because I am suprised that people are making 230kw+ using safc2 and aftermarket turbo.

2. Have seen people using all sorts of different turbos. What would be good options for this power level? Standard Turbo High Flowed, garrett gt3071r? Any other recomendations would be cool. Idealy something that bolts onto stock manifold and requires no modification or very little modification.

3. What kinda boost would be suitable to run to make this power level?

4. Will the safc2 be enough or will I also benift from getting a sitc?

5. If there are people who are achieving similar figures or have been down this road it would be great if you could post details of your mods and power made and boost run. Also are there any things to watch out for or any other recommended mods I need to make.

I have about 5k to play with but I would also like to use this to get a decent suspension setup. Ideally just want to make a nice streeter which I can also take to the track and drag strip to. Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Kailaas

I'd do suspension first, but thats just me. PLENTY of coilovers out there you can buy, however lots of SAU Skyline owners have Bilsteins in their R33, as i do, this kit is great value for money, the Bilstein Kit, its height adjustable and is a great setup for a street R33. Plus Dan from ERD is great to deal with.

also read this entire thread, it will take time,

but you have a much better understanding of what turbo and mods achieve what power, then it will give you a good basis of knowledge to work from. Good luck.

Thanks for the suspension recomendation and yup have been reading through that thread. So the Bilstiens on that web site are height and damper adjustable are they?

how the hell are you running a wastegate on the stock turbo? that's a lot of fucking around for nothing...

stock injectors and afm will be maxed out, but ok to run at 230, so

sell the SAFC, and the FPR

buy a PFC, grab a second hand highflow turbo, some swaybars, and start thinking about that new clutch you'll most probably need :)

hks 2530/ gt2530 i've got one on my rb25 and its really responsive and makes the power level you're looking for.

I was looking at them but I thought they only came in a T2 flange not T3?

I bought the car like that aye. Its been mounted on the exausht housing of the turbo itself. Screams like a Dinosaur lol. Seen as I got given the safc 2 as a hand me down I think I will try make the most of it. If I can use that to make 230kw with a highflow turbo then theres no need to get a power fc is there? I understand and know power fc is far better but just dont have the funds to buy one just yet. I probably gonna get given a sitc soon to if thats any help?

if you have a SITC and a SAFC then i would say its probably a decent idea.

the stock clutch will have a fit and die after 200rwkw tho (aparently... i've never even driven on one) so factor that in.

you mentioned drags, so fit swaybars, pineapples, caster, camber and toe. the stock struts should squat nicely and give you traction on launch.

retrofitted coilovers are more of a circuit/drift thing.... or for people who want low

low and drag dont really go together

so the ex wastegate is where IW gate should be?

that should be an easy sell to some dumbass that just wants noise....

dont bother doing it till you have the SITC and the SAFC both in.

230rwkw should be obtainable with stock injectors, fpr and afm.

Hows he going to change the afm is he uses an SITC and SAFC, neither can support the change in AFM signal for the ecu? this would require a proper remap rather than an SAFC.

my recommendation would be to get yourself a nistune properly tuned up and try find a set of cheap injectors and a Z32.. unless you go a hiflow i see the injectors and ecu being your only thing keeping you at 230.. may aswell spend a tad more and end up with 250 or even 270.. especially when your making mention of such turbos as 3071s. personally if your looking for 230, id buy a GTRS kit and get a really Gun 250.. with the above changes to your plan I have mentioned.

price has gone up, but reliability and quality has also gone up ALOT too.

also, get some pics of this stock turbo with wastegate arrangement lol id love to see it

bullshit if he is dragging keep stock suspension so the car squats.. scan wasteland thread if u dont know what im talking about here...

Thanks for the suspension recomendation and yup have been reading through that thread. So the Bilstiens on that web site are height and damper adjustable are they?

They are height adjustable only in 8mm grooves, NOT damper adjustable. I have has these in both my R33s and love them for the street, plus i do about 5 track days a year too on semi slicks and they still perform very well. Sure some coilovers will get me aroudn the track quicker but considering i spend around 360 out of 365 days on the street its hardly worth it when most of the time i am putting around Sydney in 50km/hr zones.

well im doing 233kws with supporting mods like 740cc highflow injectors, highflow turbo and power fc , fuel pump z32 , but this was with a massive boost leak. If you want anything over 200kws i suggest changing your z32 and injectors as they will be maxing out....

are you saying that he should or shouldn't keep the stock suspension for drags? hard to tell by your post.

either way, if you want to get good times at the strip you want soft suspension (stock) so that when you launch the arse end sags and puts more weight over the rear tyres. but if you want to do well at the track then you want harder suspension. if you have coilovers and go to the drags your 60ft times will suck as you will just spin the tyres off the line.

also someone said that the SAFC won't allow for AFM altering. well actually i'm pretty sure it will.

Sweet as I will take a picture when I get home from work tonight of the external wastegate setup and post it.

Sweet will get everything tunned once I have got it installed.

Im glad I posted on here as there seems to be all sorts of mixed responses. Some say that 230 is achievable with safc2 and highflow using stock injectors and afm and some say it isnt. Keep the ideas coming in. Im open to any suggestions. Tryna not spend to much money either. Got about 5k to play with.

also someone said that the SAFC won't allow for AFM altering. well actually i'm pretty sure it will.

i cant confidently say it definitely doesnt, yet it would be the first ive heard of it. its not exactly an effective method of tuning either way tho is it?

i still think a proper tune would be in order.. an SAFC in my eyes is a good tool to get your stock setup to jump a little higher.. not something you would use to get an aftermarket turbo to suit.

So what is considred soft and what is considred hard? I ask because I got offered some tein super streets for a good price. Does any one have much to say about these?

I have seen a couple of threads about pineapples and will be aquiring some of them definatly.

Car also has a Brand new Excedy Sports Tuff Button Clutch In It. So hopefully shouldnt have to worry about a new clutch.

And yeah i think you can user Z32 AFM with SAFC2. I believe you play with the IN/Out Numbers on the SAFC2. In being the number that represents the z32 afm on the wiring diagram and Out being the Number that represents the Skyline ECU? Correct me if im wrong please as you cant believe everything you read these days lol.

What are you on about? Hamish clearly said:

the stock struts should squat nicely and give you traction on launch.

He never said anything about changing the factory suspension.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
