Damo's R32 Gts-r, On Going Project Fun Car. History And Use Full Info

Recommended Posts

well it probably looks worse than it is. it is dead square with the rad suport pannel.

that spot is where the GTR trust and HKS oil cooler kits are mounted also as there is no room in the right hand side.

and im putting a duct directly onto it so that should help also.

thanks for the query thoe. other peoples perspectives are always handy.

Are you running a thermostat or different PS oil with the cooler Damo?

nope just as normal.

I just bypassed my hicas solinoids and run the rear pump through the stock power steering/hicas oil cooler loop in the front....

The hicas soliniods are heavy!

Any updates damo? Still heading to the symonds gymkhana?

Cheers

Justin

ive gathered the 3 1/2 inch stainless bends needed to make the dump and have been getting everything ready to go back together.

New deadline is a week before powercruise. chuck in xmas and new years and ive got about 3 weeks fee to complete it.

update

adapter plate and first part of the plenum bolted up ready to go on. all going well this time tomorow the head will be in place and everything will start to happen

12122010124.jpg

ive been tidying things up and painting bits and bobs ready to be put back on the car like this cusco master cylender stopper that used to be blue.

08122010120.jpg

ive finaly given the car pride of place in the shed ready to be attacked from every angle. and destickered it on one side.

12122010125.jpg

i decided i wont have time to build a full exhaust the way i wanted so i brought a twin 2 3/4" system that i will still have to modify but should save me some time. ill also be keeping the rear mufflers as id like the sound level to be resinable. especialy for my nebours sake with late night loading sessions.

12122010127.jpg

ive also gathered most of the speed flow fitting to plumb up the turbo. and am getting a fitting welded to the fuel rail for my fuel pressure sender to tidy up some more lines.

Ok so i got the head on during the week. no exciting pics there.

i braced up the exhaust manifold thismorning as out of all my friends cheap manifolds the only one not to have cracked yet is the only one that had any sort of bracing between the main flange and the turbo flange. then i bolted the manifold up to the engine. because the manifold was origanly for a t4 turbo it had an adapter plat to t3 but was missing the bolts so i got some cap bolts during the week and machined them down to fit at work. the last bit i got done today was the test fitting the turbo to see how the dump pipe will fit.

during the weekend i went and brought some bits off an ex-skyline owner. its funny how people acumulate heaps of shit out of skylines. the bloke had boxes of stuff he no longer needed. it was very temptiong to take it all but in the end i walked away with an old nardi wheel. a stock airbox as they are getting harder to come by and a spare boot lid so i can run multiple wing options. when i got the wing home i noticed that it has some very JDM rare stickers on it.

No updates for me but i am after some readers help

does anyone have any good pictures of r32s with side pipes. im after r32s mainly but r33 34s would eb good also. im trying to come up with a good designe for a side pipe for low cars.

Out the passenger door!

Have a look at russ's build thread for they're black r34gtr (hi-octane 34) for an awsome side pipe!

i've already sudjested the tunnel in the floor, and the door pipe. i doubt cams would let you run a door pipe, and i think his passengrs would sook

seeing as he doesnt have any ABS why not just go 90 degrees off the back of the turbo out the side of the front guard?

the only other way to get one on a low car that comes to mind would be to get some 4" or 5" pipe and have it crushed to its an oval shape for extra ground clearance where it passes under the chasis rail. (assuming you dont want to cut and reinforce it)

Well fk it all and turn the dump pipe upside down... run it right out the bonnet! H a ha ha.

also sudjested that one too :P

How about bolting a truck stack to the passenger guard?

Hot rod (cobra style) shrouded side pipes instead of side skirts?

Under the car, into the cabin behind the passenger seat, out through the rear guard behind the passenger door... Just build a box/heat shield over it in the cabin.

J.

all good ideas. just trying to find the right one. most of the problem is complying within the cams rules.

i realy need some pics as i think i know how to do it i just need an idea of how it should look on the outside.

i also didnt realise that mark and russes car had many detailed pics. i will go for a hunt.

just copy the super taxis. put a few, smaller diameter pipes in under the chassis rail. I'm going to run twin 60mm, same as my dump pipes. I have run 3" sidepipe before but it did scrape at times

i had thought that to but wondered weather 3 or 4 or 6 pipes would look gay/ try hard.

the biggest concern if i run side pipes is the potential for damage to the turbo and turbo manifold as a result of hitting them at any speed and at odd angles. ive flown backwards off the track more times than i care to count at over 120km/h trying to enter sideways at my local track.

i had thought that to but wondered weather 3 or 4 or 6 pipes would look gay/ try hard.

which is why i suggested a semi crushed 4-5" pipe. if you are really worried, make up a bash plate for it.

yeah it's not easy to make a sidepipe for a 32 with any kind of sane ground clearance. mark and russ's 32 had the conventional just out the side pipe on the passenger side but it was pretty low. for marks car he cut the passenger floor and made a nice tunnel for it so it comes out level with the sills out through the side skirts. short of doing that to tuck it up in the body it's not easy.

the auto gallery R32 in japan runs one out the door. I have seen it up close and it's quite cleverly done. some pics:

thanks Barron. i i had to pick my fav 32 it would be this one. im loving the small bits that get changed from time to time.

that seems to be the easyest way to do it. thanks rob.

    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
