Hi all, I nee to buy some new boots for my r34 soon and cant decide if I should go normal road tyres or semi slicks. The only thing that turns m of the slicks is the thought of them only lasting 5-10,000kms. I would like to get around 15,000kms plus from a set of tyres.

I'm not planning on seeing any track time but still want good grip. My budget would be around 250-300 per tyre.

KU36's are not race compound semi-slicks, they are street track tyres, so I would assume they wouldn't be as soft as semi-slicks are.

I believe the 595RSR is a similar story.

It also explains the price difference compared to true race compound semi-slicks :P

P.S. I'm planning to buy KU36's in the next month or two but haven't made the purchase yet, I will be avoiding wet weather driving with them. Some people say they aren't too bad but I'd be very cautious in the wet...

I've got KU36's on my car and they grip better than I expected in the wet, I don't see a reason to avoid driving in the wet because of them. You need to be careful in the wet on any tyre really. Plus they have soooo much more grip compared to my old Federal 595-SS in the dry, they're even pretty good in the wet on power down (although I only have 200rwkw)

I havent had them on for very long though so am still waiting to see how long they last. I was told guys with big power Supra's have got up around 15,000km out of them though. If I can get that I'll be happy.

You will find that the 595RS-R's last a surprisingly long time considering that they only have a treadwear rating of 140.

I have had 225/45R17 and 255/40R17 595RS-R's on my R32 Gtst which has 265rwkw (and I dont drive slowly) for around 40,000kms and they will definitely last another 10,000kms at least... I do check my pressures every week and rotate (strip and fit them from side to side) every 10,000kms though.

I can't comment on the durability of the KU36s yet but they are not that bad to drive in the wet. I had been doing a spirited hills run when it started to rain and while I started slipping very slightly I was still able to continue at a decent pace. I have also driven in pouring rain with them and took the usual precautions that I take in that kind of weather regardless of the tyres I have ie increase the distance from the car in front, try to avoid heavy acceleration and heavy braking, turn lights on so other cars can see you better etc.

PS - I have a 335rwk GTR but usually drive around running 14psi so ~250rwkW.

The kumho's are not quiet as good as the 595RS-R's although they are better than the 595SS's but that would explain the price structure SS<KU36<RSR

I think value for money wise the KU36's are the best option although it also depends on what you plan to do

The federals are on special at the moment, there pretty much the same price as the Kumho's so I dont really know which way to go.

I don't really wanna buy either of them if with 'normal' street driving I'm only gonna get 15,000kms out of them.

That's the price you have to pay for decent grip unfortunately, most high performance road tyres would have a similar lifespan.

Lucky you don't have a sports bike, I used to get 5k from a rear on my GSXR.

I'v got Toyo R1r on my GTR and they have awesome dry grip and very good in the wet, the amount of water they pick up of the road on a rainy day is unbelievable I can barely see anything behind me. They are well priced too should be within your price range but I wouldn't know about the wear only had them for about 5000k.

Of course I realise theres a trade of between trye life and tyre grip, was hoping to find a tyre that is smack in the middle haha, half decent grip but without mass wear. Was also thinking about the new Goodyear eagle asym, apparently its meant to be really good?

Its a little harder to decide now, when i had my ae86 with 15's you could get really good tyres for cheap, 18's are a killer haha.

I have the KU36s and find them excellent, very grippy. I cannot comment on lifespan yet as i have only had them for 5,000km. I find them excellent in the wet, no complaints at all.

If you are interested more in tyre lifespan then maybe you shouldnt be looking at the closest road legal thing to a semi slick...

KU36's overheat quickly at the track and there performance decreases a lot (Along with wear increase). Need to let them cool every 2-3 laps.

I suppose you cant really compare street and track. My KU36 fronts have done 2 track days and about 5000Km's and are 30-40% worn i guess.

If anyone else is looking Option1Garage has the Federal range on special, so the price difference between the KU36 and the 595RSR isn't so big anymore :D

How noisey are KU36s ?

it varies. the 245 & 275 x 18s I had on the Supra were very quiet, but the 215/45x17s on my Legnum were noisey as hell. The Leggie wore the fronts pretty hard on the inside edge too, so the noise was probably alignment related.

they did 15,000km and probably 8-10 track days on the Supra and the fronts were still going strong. Rears were down to TWI.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
