M35 - Induction Noise, Whistle Hiss Etc

After driving up to Bathurst over Easter weekend with a friend he was concerned about the whistle/induction noise.. i told him its fine and most/all do it?

is this correct? does everyone who owns a m35 make this noise??

he has since spoken to a reputable jap wrecker (who works with his race car) who has told him its a very very common problem with the m35 having the induction pipe cracked? (i think he said induction) thus creating this noise? could this also be the problem to the fuel issues too?

it is the turbo as it gets older. It gets louder the older (more worn out) the turbo is.

It only makes this noise under positive boost.

Haven't really hear of any induction pipes cracking and I suppose that the bit he is referring to is the narrow cast pipe that goes from the elbow to the turbo.

Shouldn't be a problem there.

A split in the rubber or a split intercooler pipe would be more plausible, especially on the outlet pipe of the intercooler (gets quite brittle).

M35's have quite a loud induction sound as you know, especially from the turbo.

Changing the intake pipe will change your consumption... and not for the better if you enjoy your boost lol.

Yer i was trying to work out what he was talking about. the induction one i wouldnt think would be that bad since its not really pressureised.

it was his first ride in a volvo he was telling me it sounds like a boost leak. i said nar its just normal..

i might try hit him up again about it and see what pipe he is talking about. his wrecker was 100% sure they knew the problem and that it was that common in japan..

would love to hear a low km m35 from new or something to see what they sound like.

Thats easy, rebuild the turbo. :D

Bearings aren't supposed to make those noises but they may last ages if you can put up with it. I couldn't.

did you change your suction pipe at the same time as the high flow install?

My turbo keeps getting louder as time goes by so Andy is correct. I've also driven a fair few Stageas and they all have their different levels of noise, but it's not always the case that higher kms the louder it gets.

I can't wait unit it hits crescendo and pop she goes!

Actually, the crescendo is quite disappointing

did you change your suction pipe at the same time as the high flow install?

Just after.

The intake is smaller than the stock front wheel, I went from the standard 46mm compressor to 56mm so decided a 3 inch intake was required, gained around 25kw just from the pipe.

i am guessing there was no whistle when you had the high flow with the stock pipe on the front?

mot really a whistle ......more a jet sound with the stock suction pipe!!!

      Depending on how long the car sat it is very possible for injectors to be stuck open or closed, I'd get them cleaned and flow tested. Other than that, obviously when the loom changes and the car doesn't start any more....the loom is suspect so some tracing / comparing may be required

      Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi

      Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom

      I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
