I recently purchased a GCG r33 high flow turbo. I took it to GCG and had it inspected . While i was there i spoke to michael and he informs me that this turbo can handle 20psi, make 250kw on rb25 and also boost 400rpm later than the original turbo.

my mods include

3inch exhaust with dump pipe

PFC

Standard airbox with high flow filter

FMIC

040 fuel pump

Z32 air flow on its way

555cc injectors on its way

Yavuc from Unigroup will be tuning

I have upgraded the r33 wastegate 7psi with the r32 10psi wastegate as these are stronger. i have heard that GCG HF spikes at 18psi then drops to 16psi. Hopefully i have eliminated this with a stronger waste gate.

Is the r33 rear turbine housing causing this issue due to the size?

Does the r34 op6 housing eliminate this issue and allow higher boost?

Will i hit 250kwatw with the above mods?

Any advice or experience greatly appreciated, thankyou

the highflow will make 250rwkw easily

if you want to run 16psi all the time, dont fit a 10psi actuator and let your boost controller bleed the difference, you should fit a larger actuator say 14psi and let your controller bleed 2psi

the bigger the difference between the actuator and the target boost you want, the harder your contrller has to work and the more difficult it would be to maintain stable control

I have a greedy profec 2 boost controler. I want my target boost to be 18psi and holding strongly to 7000rpm.

Wouldnt i be better off running Rb20 wastegate(10psi spring) rather than Rb25 wastegate(7psi) spring if i want to hold 18psi on high boost setting. The controler will not work as hard as you say..

I already have both wastegates and im tossing up wether to buy another wastegate say 12psi or maybe 14psi aftermarket . My aim is to hold boost levels strong and consistant as i have heard that the high flows cannot flow 18psi without dropping to 16psi. Also why the GCG turbos retain the standard rb25 7 psi wastegate, shouldnt they be upgraded like hypergear turbos and hks turbos etc.

as stated, get the spring rated closest to the pressure you want to run

i dont know why GCG do that, go and ask them ?

logic says it comes in as a normal turbo, they hiflow it and it's done, if you want a higher rated spring you ask for it and they charge extra

on my old R33 i ran a GCG highflow, was running 20psi boost that would then taper off to 18psi higher in the rev range. Great turbos and sensational value for money, i loved it. I was running a Profec B Spec II as well with PFC and all other supporting mods. Made 253rwkw, my tuner said it could have made a fair bit more but i didnt want to push it too much.

Thanks for the feedback, you have inspired some new confidence in achieving my desired results, well done. If i can achieve the same results i will be a happy man.

Did your high flow retain the standard wastegate or did it have an aftermarket wastegate.

How was the response of the turbo? compared to the other bolt on options for r33 .

The R32 10psi actuator will be fine. I've got the R33 gcg with R32 actuator running about 18psi with a simple boost controller (ball and spring), tapers back to 16psi in last 1000rpm I think...electronic boost controller could maintain the 18psi to redline but I'm not worried.

What they do as an option on the turbos is bore our the wastegate opening and add a larger "flap" to improve boost control.

Should be fine with or without though I would think.

Pretty sure mine had the stock actuator on it. The response form the turbo was sensational, really good mid-top range with a huge whack at the top (for a small turbo). I was extremely happy with it and you cant complain for the price, great bang for bucks. Throttle Response was almost identical to stock, it takes a fraction longer to boost up to the full 20psi, just dont expect to floor it and WHAM instant 20psi, but after driving several other modified turbo cars and modded skylines i didnt even notice it after a few days. Having said that its still super responsive for street driving, which is why i had the GCG as most streets around me are 50km/hr zones so i didnt want any form of lag. Was very happy with it, and you will be too. GCG have a tip top reputation, and the reason i bought their high flow is many manyexperienced forum members couldnt say a bad word about them. So all in all thats my 2 cents and experience with those turbos.

ENJOY!

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
