Thought about this more... if you simplify it down... assume there's 100 drivers in the state and 100 crashes per year.

so there's:

13 p-platers who are responsible for

25 crashes

and

87 non p-platers responsible for

75 crashes

lets say a road safety campaign has a 10% effectiveness in dropping accident rates (be by whatever method they choose)... it'll mean that with some rounding...

12 p-platers will be responsible for

23 crashes

or

79 non p-platers will be responsible for

68 crashes

so if they focussed on non p-platers crashing only, then they'd have 7 less crashes, rather than 2 less crashes.

So if the end goal was to have less crashes, it'd be far smarter to target NON p-platers.

surely you'd target the majority rather than the minority as that would result in a larger reduction in incidents, assuming the same resources are allocated to the majority and a similar effectiveness in reduction, it would mean that proportionally speaking we'd have less accidents on the road.

because its over representation in the statistics. p platers are more likely to crash, full stop. once the 13% of p platers on the road cause 13% of crashes the scapegoating will stop, and authorities will be forced to focus on the driving community as a whole.

its how we achieve this goal that is important.

what is the chief reason young people crash?

theyre inexperience in situations arrising on the road.

it could be they cant 'read' the traffic properly, or theyre trying out something they havent experienced before- like a burnout or a handbreaky, or they dont realise how damn stupid it is to drive pissed. or any other combination of unforseen events culminating in a disaster.

how do we address the inexperience?

with comprehensive driver training.

training that shows you how easy it is to loose control, and how to regain that control if it happens to you. you cant stop young people from doing burnouts and pulliong handbrakeys, they will try it out. power restrictions and speed limiters will not stop this alone. so you have to give the drivers the tools to save themselves. this is in no way a free ticket to speed and hoon and rally on public roads, and a lot of p platers will do the right thing. but for those who dont, its better they be able to save themselves (And theyre passengers) than not.

training that shows you how to 'read' the traffic. this is supposed to be addressed by driving with your parents everywhere from the time you get you learners. the age to get you learners needs to be decreased then- to give drivers a better chance to learn this crucial skill so you dont pull out in front of that semi.

speed limiters: no. expensive, easily bypassed, and if your going to install these why not a breath alchohol interlock as well? and if we're doing it to p platers why not all cars? and as previously mentioned everybody overtakes a bit over the limit. its safer going faster around grandma and grandpa than sitting in the opposite lane any longer than you have to.

power/weight restrictions: yes. get the basics down in your p plate years before jumping in that 500kw gtr.

roads: fix them! put the poles further away from the road while your at it to.

I thought this exercise was about saving lives, not about making people smarter. I personally couldn't give a rats arse about educating p-platers, if you reduced the overall number of incidents that reduces my chances of being involved in an accident due to someone else's fault, regardless of license level. This is all I care about.

Driver training and education is the key. Make it harder to get and keep a licence. Tougher penalties for ALL drivers not just P-platers.

my self and my sister 1.5 years in age diffrence.

me i got my licence as soon as i could and drove every time we went some were (not with mum tho) i would fight my dad to drive to the point of aguments and i did this for two years.

my sister got her p's at age 20 hardly drove, and got a driving lesson before her p-test.

my record. 0 crashes

hers 3 (minor bingles)

i was even afraded to sit in the car wither her casue of her driving.

yes vic does now require 120H for l-platers but how easy is this to forge?

i think its one of those things where you can take a horse to water but you cant make it drink. you just have to give people the best opportunities. and perhaps a minimum amount of hours clocked with a driving instructor (harder to forge) is the key here. these should be subsidised so as not to encumber lower income families, though.

your right of course, if the same resources and money were spent on fully licenced drivers there would be a reduction in total crashes in the short term. but if we educate p platers, they will eventualy be the fully licenced drivers, and will carry that education with them for the rest of theyre lives, leading to fewer overall crashes in the future, and forever more.

the best way to stop crashes is by educating people! and the ones that need educating are the ones without experience! smarter people=less dumb shit accidents.

restricting power, although important, speed limiters, less passengers, these are all knee jerk reactions, bandaind fixes that take choice from people and personaly i hate that. being responsible is about making the right choices, and learning from the wrong ones, and we cant do that if there are no choices to make.

I have attended two.

mercotts defencive driving- was a 18th bday present and was quite happy with that one. the speeds all the practical were done at were 40-60km/h

did the 2nd one when i got my own car (6 months after turning 18) with AAMI insurance as it was free.

didn't like it as the speeds were much lower 30-40km/h and didn't realy show what could happen.

If there is one thing for sure i agree with its the power restriction rules.. im almost 21 now and have just got a turbo vehicle. but before i had the skyline i drove a subaru liberty, just a manual stocko 2.5l awd.. it was awd so i could never do anything stupid like burnouts, drifts, etc.. most fun would be a handbrakey, and you get bored pretty quick... i must say i think it was the best first car to start driving in and i know what im gonna buy my kids if i ever have any and if they ever get their licences. haha

having said that.... most of the other rules they are trying to implement now are f**king ridiculous... banning driving at night for p platers/under 25s.. or whatever it is... how do they expect ppl to experience driving at night then?? so as soon as we can legally drink and drive.. we can drive at night.. seems f**kin ridiculous.

and harsher points system...? its already fairly harsh as is.. i mean accidents happen, and you need to take into account ppl do make mistakes... 5 points in 365 days, its already pretty tight if you ask me.

its got to do with the driver not the car, as a number of low power cars end up in stupid accidents ( stepping on gas instead of the brake etc)
