GTRsean
Hey Sean Will you be adjusting comp and squish ? Hey Bobby, I'll work it out the same as Sloane's build, most likely be around 9.0:1. Block is getting decked, and I'm using non valve relief pistons. Will also use a suitable headgasket thickness depending on measured piston crown to cylinder head quench pad clearance for squish. I have asked the engine machinist to bore and hone the block with a torque plate and set piston to bore clearance at 2.5 thou. Others have run tighter with tomei's but I have settled on 2.5 thou. GTRsean
Did some bodywork up keep lately while waiting for the block to come back from machining. Rust under the wing stay and center brake light. Put it this way, when the new boot lid goes on, the boot will never rust again! Removed the wing, boot lid and also the rear bar. New boot fitted, just needs holes drilled for spoiler and rubbers. Rear bar needed a repair done and then resprayed, and a new boot lid got sprayed too. Next is to drill holes for the spoiler and fit new GTR badge and vspec sticker to rear bar. Still deciding on if I should put the nissan badge back on the boot. Also got my new nismo timing belt The rear HPI dump pipe got a exhaust temp bung welded on as well so that it is the same as the stock V spec dump pipe. Still love how big these dump pipes are!! SiR_RB
I'm lucky enough to have the same HPI stainless bellmouth dumps on my car, god dam they are nice and big Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/323011-99-r34gtr-vspec-now-stroked/page/11/#findComment-6574845 Share on other sites
GTRsean
Yep nice big dumps! Block has been decked, 6thou taken off. Torque plate was put on the block and torqued to 105FTLBs this arvo, so it's ready for the hone. Crank with flywheel-clutch and ross balancer was on the balancer. 2 grams need to be removed from the flywheel. Should be ready to start assembly soon! blue_vl_t
What are you looking to do with the intake piping to the turbos and outlets? You keeping the stock look, with air box etc. nice build by the way, good looking Gtr. Also where did you purchase -5 rear housings as seperate items? GTRsean
Thanks! I try to keep it neat haha! I just bought 2 second hand -5's, as getting a hold of rear turbine housings in the 'compact 5 bolt GTR' is next to impossible in Aus!! A bit of aluminum welding and piping and copying the same inlet/outlet routing as the stock comp housings. I have an idea on how to do it, I'll put up pics when I get to that stage Yep, stock airbox and twin turbo pipe. I know flow won't be as good as full custom piping, but I'm not concerned. OYEAHA
Did you fit a carbon fibre boot ? Do you know the weight difference ? How did you find the fitment and what brand ? I'm hoping to have mine done for SAU nats. Thinking stock piping also. GTRsean
Thanks Jacob! Original boot was starting to rust in a couple of spots, so I thought I'd get a replacement, and paint it. Got it from Unique autosports, dunno the brand. Saves about 6kg or so (didn't bother weighing), pity it's the wrong end of the car... Fitment was good, only where it meets with the rear bar, is where it's a little close to the bumper. Just have to mount spoiler, rubber stops and brake light and it's done. Hi Jangles, read your posts in the GTX thread. Oh well, it's hopefully sorted now once the turbos come in. I now have 2 turbine rear ends that are good for paper weights now!! I also have to have this done by nats, but it's not looking good! I'm still waiting for my machined block to be finished, and right now, I'm stripping down the old engine to swap over the parts. So much stuff to do! Checked valve clearances today, before I remove the cylinder head. Intake was .019 thou, and exhaust was .017 thou.... That explains the rattle noise on start up before oil pressure gets to the head!! Clearances are way too big, and so I lose valve lift. Time to get new shims once I micro up the old shims. Also found on removal of the intake manifold and throttle bodies, #1 cylinder had a cracked gasket, and evidence of leakage, so a boost leak. The stock intake gaskets are crap, as they age they get hard and brittle, as others know and have found out. I always fit metal intake gaskets, HKS, nitto, Tomei etc, and spray hylomar on them too. No leaks, especially once you pump some boost down it's throat!!! GTRsean
Removed the cylinder head from the block. Piston tops are great, and bores are pretty good. Head is original, and still has the jap sticker on the underside, so not shaved down yet. Pulled cams out and bagged the buckets and shims, then got to work cleaning all the carbon crap out of the head. Used de greaser in a can and a nylon brush, then water, then some water dispersant/corrosion inhibitor. Came up pretty clean. Valves and valve springs are next to be removed, then some cleaning up of the ports and combustion chambers. Then it just needs new stem seals, and new springs, retainers and some new shims to get valve clearances spot on again! GTRsean
Pulled front diff apart to fit the 3.5:1 to the big sump. Replaced bearings and seals, so all fresh. Block is ready to be sprayed and assembled. GTRsean
Bottom end is done. Measured all the parts up and fitted bearings, rings, stretch torqued the rod bolts. Just needs some paint Nice to build it up in a workshop for a change and not a carport back shed!! GTRsean
I had to hurry things along a little. I gave him till the end of October to do. We don't mess around haha! Yep I'm happy I can finally start to put it back together again. The old bottom end does take up some room Bottom end is sealed finally. Just need the cylinder head and it'll be ready to fully assemble. Eric's crank locking tool he made worked a treat, getting a stubborn balancer bolt off. No damage to crank or keyways, so the balancer was definately tight Nissan navara came in handy!!
