I know road tuning is always going to be better but it's not as easy as the dyno due to the speeds and loads you need to put the engine through. If it were my car I would have taken it to a tuner who knew the ecu and therefore could tune it properly and quickly. If there were no tuners with experience in the ecu I was looking at buying I would have bought one they did have experience/recommended but different strokes and all.

I have my car back now and the final power figure was 398hp@16 psi. The car is running better than it has ever been and there is no hesitation as well as smooth power delivery.

Does this figure sound right if all the supporting mods are done bar the internals (although I have gone for tomei 260/9.15 cams)?

16psi doesn't seem like the gt2530s are well into their efficiency range?

The avcr solenoid doesn't seem to be too happy either as it kind of boost up then dips then stays roughly around the 16psi mark. I am probably going to get myself a MAC valve to hopefully iron this out.

The owner mentioned that the engine doesn't seem to produce anymore power with no explanations so I will speak to the tuner in a couple of more days. What do you guys think?

I used to have an avc-r, then it was removed and replaced with an ally pipe with a hole drilled in it.

Holds boost better than that thing ever did or will.

Can I ask, if you have to take the car to be tuned every time a mod is done and it costs x amount of dollars to do so, why not spend the money on a wide band oxygen sensor and laptop with the appropriate software and learn to do it yourself ? It is part of the whole experience of ownership. You are obviously on a long voyage of discovery here so believe in yourself and do it. If you had the car for a few years and maybe this was the last year of owning it I'd say go ahead and pay someone. This does not seem like the case though so I just hope you don't find yourself in a couple of years wishing you had started to learn the tuning process starting today.

My experience ? Nobody will tune your car as well as you can given enough time. It is your pride and joy, imagine every cell tuned to perfection and it didn't cost you any more than a hired dyno.

i say the same thing to people all the time but everyone seams to think tuning is some dark magic that only workshops can do after 1000 years training. if you want to save money and learn a shitload along the way, buy a wideband and tune yourself, theres plenty of help around if theres anything you cant figure out.

300kw from 2530s is abit short of expected.

Correct me if Im wrong but on a properly built motor these are good for over 400? I would have expected atleast 350.

He's only running 16 psi, but it does seem odd to run 400kw turbos then only crank them up to 300.

Any reason why they didn't try for more boost?

Yeap, complete stock internals.

I've spoken to the tuner and he said the owner gave him instructions to do a "safe" tune. He said he didn't actually push the engine much......

so on that note, I don't know what to think actually. I gave instructions that this engine will only need to last 3000kms/1 year as I don't use it as a daily, it did less than that in the year that I've owned it thus far. The owner kind of does his own things rather than what I had ask of him on quite a few occasions already which meant I had to go back to get it corrected or show him exactly where to put things.

on that note, I am considering trying out another place to check on a few things. Every now and then on startup I get belt skip sounds as well and I had a full timing belt service.

i believe the bloke said the motor is internally stock somewhere in the thread previously.

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
