hey guys,

i have an r34 GTT, nismo aftermarket 300km dash cluster.

this morning got in my car and the fuel guage had dropped from 1/2 to a 1/4 overnight...

i had only done about 250km. so started it up and then on my way home and it dropped down another 1/4 about over the next 10 mins and the light came on...

then went back up to a 1/4 tank... =S

any1 able to shed some light on this as i have no idea? tried searching for some answers but didnt find anything...

car did stutter when it hit boost i think last week but i had very low fuel at the time... dunno if this is at all related...

any answers would be great thanks...

were you driving around somewhere hilly? was the car parked on a slope overnight? if so then that will cause the fuel gauge to fluctuate. in the missus pulsar if i have under 1/4 of a tank and go up a hill the fuel light will come on, and if i'm driving around hill places with low fuel then the gauge will fluctuate. this is simply because of the location of the sensor and the way that the fuel will slosh around as it gets lower.

I had this in mine. You'll need the pull your fuel pump out and just make sure nothing has been dislodged. I happen to replace my pump at the same time (upgrade) and all was good.

phil how annoying is it haha.

nah it wasnt around anywhere hilly i was parked on flat ground over night so im fairly sure thats not it but thanks for the idea..

thanks damien, is it obvious that something is displaced =S also its not goin to do any harm the way it is atm is it? as i have exams coming up next week and would prefer to not be messing around with my car until the end of next wk..

thanks

Possibly. Its quite easy to get to the pump on a GTT. Not the case with GTRs though. I noticed that about 50%, the gauge was accurate then once I hit half, it was yo-yo mode. I just had to rely on the trip kms. Then I put the GTR pump in and must have solved it at the same time.

yer that sounds similar to mine it only played up once it was below halfway...

possibly it could have fixed itself? or possibly it could do damage?

mayb i shoudl just have a look tomorrow, my boost guage is playing up to my guages arnt being very friendly lol

It sounds like the carbon tracks on the fuel sender in the tank are dirty or worn. Try cleaning them with metho or contact cleaner and a toothbrush.

The faulty boost gauge will be a dry joint on the sensor board in the engine bay. There are a few diy repair threads if you search around. Do you have a soldering iron?

can anyone tell me how big a standard fuel tank is in an r34 ?? (i have a sedan so dont know if its different) but my car gets to empty and i only fill it up buy 42leters so ether they have a small fuel tank or my fuel gauge reads wrong ??

pretty sure it's about 65L. fuel light generally comes on with about 10L to go. the needle will usually be at the E line when the fuel light comes on so you have a bit of a reserve to get to a fuel station

yer i found some threads on the boost guage and do have a soldering iron around but havent gotten around to doin that as im pretty used to it, its fine but for now its the fuel guage that id like to fix first.

any chance you could shed some light on how id go about doin that scotty..?

as i really have no idea...

  • 2 months later...

same issue here with the fuel gauge ... let the tank go pretty dry once (well not that dry probably 5l left in it) but more dry than usual and from next day it's been "in yoyo mode" ever since.

How do you get to the fuel sender tracks in the tank ...? Does the fuel tank have to be removed? Any tips appreciated .. its not a big deal because I can rely on the trip meter but it annoys the crap out of me when the empty tank light comes on randomly

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
