I'm currently sourcing the final parts for my R32 GTR turbo upgrade. I am going with -5 turbos and am stuck on what intercooler to go for. I have done some research and have read that standard cooler is good for upto 350kw which is around the power i'm chasing. The problem is that the car will be used for track days so I don't want to run the risk of having too high of intake temps after a few laps.

Will the stock intercooler be ok on the track with 350-360kw?

If not, what do you reccomend?

Maybe have a look for an R34GTR cooler, they seem to be a little more efficient... they have a handy little fitting for an air temp sensor too..

The ultimate set up for -5's and circut work is the ARC twin entry 70mm cooler. I believe the Hi Octane 34 runs one too. Around 1700 USD

Or you could run a water spray kit to keep the intake temps down.

Wow I knew the factory intercoolers were good but not that good lol.

What benefits would there be going with an ARC twin entry over factory with water spray kit?

Do you know any water spray kits that you would reccomend?

An intercooler is a very basic air to air heat exchanger. The ARC cooler is superior to the factory design in a couple of areas:

Less restrictive flow path and less pressure drop

More effective and efficient at cooling the intake charge

Same or better flow through of outside air through the cooler... this helps to keep the radiator (water to air heat exchanger) cooler.

Honestly, unless the car is a heavily used on the track, your stock cooler should be fine... if you live somwhere hot, then invest in a cooler spray kit.

I don't know of any off the shelf spray kits for intercoolers, but it's the kind of thing you can do yourself with a couple of garden nozzles and a spare windscreen washer bottle- OR use the rear washer motor in your existing washer bottle (who uses the rear washer anyway??) Just need to get a little creative.

you will actually get meaningful gains over the i/c water spray, which wont do much unless its pretty much constantly on, which on the track will mean water going under the car and potentially under the tyres.

Are you running stock internals?

I've got -5's and am running stock internals, with stock R34 cooler. What difference will this make??? I only run very low boost though as its my daily driver and I can't afford a rebuild at the moment.

Just did a little research on Water/Meth Injection and seems like a very good way to go with impressive gains in power, intake temps and the reduction of knock in an engine. Do you know anyone who does these in Aus as I would be very interestred in possibly giving it ago.

Your tuner is going to need to be familiar with setting up water/meth injection. Otherwise your gonna have research it and work with him on tuning the car. Spend a couple of hours reading up on it and how different kits use different methods of controlling injection flow etc... The most well sorted setup i've seen is the aquamist hsf-6 which is easy to setup and tune, has progressive control, fail safe and reliable. It's not cheap though at about 1k, worth the extra coin over the cheaper setups in my opinion. Cheaper setups will do the same job just not as well.

Not too sure if this theory is still used but, I remember reading an article on intercoolers and they explained there is 2 types.

One is "Bar and Plate" and the other is "Tube and Fin"

From memory, Tube and Fin gives better cooling and Bar and Plate gives better air flow. (I think that's how it goes?)

Having said that, since you want to track / circuit your car, you would probably go Tube and Fin as it give better cooling because you will need it as you spend more time on the track, car will be exposed to a lot more heat so you would need good "Cooling"...

If your GTR was designed for Drag Racing, you would go Bar and Plate as you won't spend too much time on the track... Depending on the car, you'd be on the track for no more than 15 secs.

You want the air flow straight away.

This my not be the case these days as I was talking about this to a friend a good few years ago...

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻

I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”

    • Yes it is ATF. I quote @Duncan "it takes a good synthentic auto trans fluid like Castrol Transmax Z" It's not a diff. It's a transfer case. Totally different thing. Yes, fluid will come out the sender hole. No you do not really need to drain it. Just pull the old, quickly poke the new, clean up and top up. But realistically, you should probably take the opportunity to change it anyway.
