It’s been a long time coming, but drag racing returned to NSW when Western Sydney International Dragway held its first Wednesday Street Meeting on January 21, 2004.

Following seven years of hard work by Jim Read and company, WSID opened its doors attracting close to 3000 spectators and over 100 entries. A thunderstorm blew through at about 4pm and while a second storm lurked around in the sky, it disappeared and the track was dried. At about 7pm the officials were in position and the first two cars were given the signal to enter the WSID drag racing arena. What was significant for Auto Salon and Drag Combat fans alike was that the first two cars were both imports. Two Nissan Skylines smoked ‘em up in the burnout pad and caught clean greens before speeding off down the brand new quarter mile.

For some, rain is seen as a good luck charm but for us the first pairing featuring two import cars is sure seen as a good omen for Drag Combat’s future.

The first run was pretty woeful as there was NO rubber down (there was lots more when we were done) and the track was cold and slightly damp. Everyone was complaining about grip but the track is MUCH flatter and the concrete goes all the way to half-track.

Successive runs got exponentially better and I bettered my previous best ET, Terminal Speed & 60' time.

Had an awesome night and doing the first burnouts (on the strip) and the first runs alongside a mate was the best!

Stay tuned. I think this is all the more reason for people to come to DragCombat. If schmucks like me can pull 13.4 on the first night at a NEW strip, then surely you can come and beat that!?!?!?

Well done Adrian and Buster !!

From a spectators point of view this venue is fantastic. The biggest gripe I have is that the seats in the grandstand are quite squashy (good luck getting past the person next to you). Although after looking at the prices for major events the grandstand seating is going to be the least of my worries.

You can see the entire 1/4 mile from absolutely anywhere on the hill without even moving from your seat. Their are massive lights every 50m down on both sides and at 100% brightness its as clear as day meaning that photo opportunities are endless and video's are gonna be awesome.

Two big digital screens at the end of the 1/4 give spectators instant info such as; reaction time, 60ft, 300ft, 400ft, TS, 1/4 Time and it flashes red and gree for the winner.

The venue still has alot of construction going on but i'd say a good 98% of it is complete. Parking is abit of a hike from the starting line (about 1/4 mile past the end of the 1/4 mile) but getting in and out of the massive parking areas is very quick and efficient.

Their is -heaps- of space for food trucks, merchanise stands etc and the pits area is quite large too (although their are no garages which im quite surprised, disappointed about).

Give it a good 2 months after afew rounds of top fuel dragsters lay some rubber and I think you will see afew more of the NSW boys towards the top of my "SAU 1/4 Mile" list :)

was it packed? how was the scrutineering and wait time before you hit the xmas tree lights? how many runs did you get and why the hell arent there any ET's posted!!! :lol:

One question....

When you do brake liners like that to warm up the tyres... doesn't it wear down the rear brakes real bad?... I was under the impression it did but someone told me that the rear brakes let go when you do that so they dont wear at all..???? not too sure bout that though.... sorry if i'm kinda hijacking the thread but i'm really curious.... i don't wanna wear the crap outta my rotors before each run....

Brett ran 11.7 @ 128 and I went 13.4 @ 104. Both personal bests :P

Re: the brake-job question, you dont have to push the brake bedal down very hard at all as you dont have that much traction pushing you forward. Therefore your brakes are fine and last ages.

Thanks guys. Frankie, DEFINITELY room for improvement. Both with the strip and the cars/drivers. Same tyres and some more practice and I should get lower into the 13's for Drag Combat.

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.
    • My Nismo 1.5 churps a bit on reverse turns when cold, but besides that feels like a stock diff.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
