It hasnt gone bang...but perhaps the start of the end. One thing though to do a 49 with the problems i had it is still making good power. The hard thing to get used to is the grip from the tyres, the lack of wheelspin ion any gear makes me think its down on power...biut was still overtaking plenty of cars down the straight.

Some test this week will tell me more

How many K's before it gave up the ghost Roy?

I seized my last 20, it finally gave up the ghost to the point of total lock on my driveway. It freaking got me home before it totally f**ked out. The next day I rolled it down a hill and clutched it back to life, then drove it to wakefield.

I ended up giving up trying to break it and replaced it with my spare for the sake of it (one I was trying to break had a burnt valve and I picked up a lower K spare cheaper than the cost of fixing it).

Long live the RB20.

Its done just under 60,000kms. Its done a few drift events, a few drag events, its done 2 Dutton Rallys, probably about 10-15 motorkhana days and its done maybe 20 track days?

Hasnt run less then 18psi/235rwkws since about 2005 and often run 21psi and 260-275rwkws.

The blow-by is hardly anything to panic about as it only 2/3 filled the Greddy catch can after 4 sessions at Winton and 5 sessions at Phillip Island. Many cars fill that catch can to the same extent after one session. So its still well within the limits of acceptable, its just that its blotted its clean no blow-by record.

In for compression test and dyno run on Tuesday to see what the trend looks to be

I want to go back next weekend as there is another PI day. I have a gearbox leak that stopped me going out and giving it a good go with the right pressures. Car was also knocking its head off in 5th all the way down the straight which was a little unnerving...but kept my foot into it enough to get a laptime

if you dont know where the leak is coming from check the rubber boot on top of the gear box where the shifter goes in. they are common to split. and they only need a small split then they spew oil out with a few revs and a bit of a hill. new boots are around $20 from nissan.

Just finished reading this thread!

took me a couple days as ive been reading it at work.

but my god this is an awesome build, very impressed and its good to see people still goin strong with the rb20.

im about to start buildin my rb20 up for my laurel but not lookin for anywhere near the power you have. as its a street car im only lookin for about 220 rwkw.

but its nice to know that i dont need to waste money on cams and shit like that. to make the power.

Yeh dont waste money on cams. Some people seem to get gains from them, you may get a gain, but plenty of evidence around says you may just waste your money.

That all said, my 256/8.5mm Tomei cams are going in over the next fortnight... Just to see if they work any better then the Apexi cams I tried :)

AND I owe the lil RB20 an apology. It seems the car simply has more grip then it used to and where it used to slide I can now carry more throttle then ever before. It doesnt seem to be down on power after all or any obvious issues with the engine.

So the cooling pressure test came up A-OK. And the best bit was the compression test results were as follows:

Cylinder 1 - 155psi

Cylinder 2 - 155psi

Cylinder 3 - 150psi

Cylinder 4 - 150psi

Cylinder 5 - 145psi

Cylinder 6 - 150psi

Pretty even and I didnt connect a batter pack to the car so the drop off in psi could in part be attributed to the battery draining a little after so much cranking. (its a pretty small, shitty battery that does not hold a lot of charge)

So, the engine now has its own name ... :worship:"Lazarus" :)

E85 should be a lot better than 105 (and cheaper)

if you only 1/2 filled one of those tiny greddy catch can, your engine is only just run in. I spat 2l out during the the 3 1/2 mins worth of prolouge.

26 cam covers will stop a lot of oil coming out too

Wash your mouth out with soap :) I may have a GTR bumper and rear spoiler on my car but I would never defile an RB20 with lowly RB26 rocker covers. :)

I am painting the engine bay over Xmas so will play with the rocker covers and breather system then. Should be a lot neater, and also got some things planned for the Plazmaman plenum before I ditch it.

And finally someone was nice enough to take what I think is a cool pic of Lazarus :0

wow that is amazing the compression is so good still. my poor coupe which by all evidence i could find had been stock its entire life was barely making 149 across the board. haha.still not bad,

but for you to have been hammering this thing around with as much boost as your running and still have basically mint compression is awesome.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
