Ok ok, now it is my turn to join the fricking yellow sticker club.... just cos they got so much damn time on their hands

Was driving peaceably down Rosanna Road towards Mill Park, when a divvy van decided to tail my arse and then finally pull me over. Apparently, as i found out later on from one of the 'nicer' officers (if there are such things), there had been some dicks dragging and racing around the area.

This baldie officer, after getting my license, he promptly decided to look under the car and then tell me I was about an inch too low. He told me '.... well, you know your car is too low and it is very dangerous if you hit a child and they get under the car, they can get dragged along if it is too low....'. Fark me, this must be one skinny arse anorexic punk that can fit under 100mm or we must be living in oompa loompa land. Why not let us install fricking Japanese style vertex kits so that we SCOOP up the kids instead of trampling them????

So after something like 20 minutes (how hard is it to fill out a defect notice??), he gave the canary, and figgering I had no more reason to be polite, started ranting about how we skyline owners actually look after our cars and make sure they are running exceptionally well, and their real job should be to pull over POS bombs that are literally falling to bits. I told them that I wasn't part of some drag racing crap that was going on in the area and he pissed me off by saying '... thats what excites us....' :(

Meh, at least they didnt fine me or make me get a roadworthy. So what to do? I probably need to get my car raised a little (thank goodness for height adjustable suspension) and I WILL need to get the exhaust raised - or whatever you call it, cos it didn't pass rego inspection first time (2nd time they didnt even check)

So my question is - where should I go to get the exhaust raised? Anyone know someone who can do it around the South East Burbs?

Thanks for reading my rant. Its been 6months and I have only been targeted for defect this once. I dunno - maybe I should consider myself un/lucky. Gonna be a problem once I actually start modding it :flamed:

hehe welcome to my neck of the woods. I live in Mill Park and as we speak there's dicks hooning about down Plenty Rd etc.

Rosanna Rd is to be avoided at all costs, cops love that road coz if they don't get you for speeding (60km/hr on a main rd come on...) they get you for defects.

Do you have adjustables? If not grab a set of stock shocks and chuck em on for the roadworthy, then take em off.

DJ_Lethal was tellin me this morning he had a set to get rid of. Grab em n get one of the boys to install it. Failing that sell danny your body n get him to do it :(

im pretty sure Daalder Exhaust would do it.

Theres one in Dandenong..

I havent got a canary yet (touch wood) but i have been epa'd and just that was a pain in the a$$ to get off...

Good luck with it!!

:(

yeah boyz just a pain in the ass - working in Sydney next week - how the hell am i supposed to get my car during the work hours to Vicroads?!?. i actually went down to the local exhaust shop today and asked if they would raise the exhaust at the muffler (cos the resonator is right at the end, right?) and they said it couldnt be done cos if it is raised too much, it could melt electrical wiring and other shit near the body. Is that true? Cos when I was feeling around there, there was definitely a gap where it could be raised into.

Anyways, I raised the rear suspension almost all the way and it seems to be at least 10.5 cm clearance at the lowest point. Whats the lowest legal limit?? Looks hella stupid, with the arse all high up and all now.

Thanks guys. Yeah they WERE being pricks, cos my body kit is over 10cm, and the exhaust is only slightly lower than the body kit, thats probably how they defected me - there was no measuring device used at all.

Its funny how even a minor defect changes your opinion of cops.

i think you have been lucky here... did they check the engine bay? did they check the interior? unlucky is when they defet you for not having a H-pattern on your knob (gear) or for not having padding on your steering wheel. they could really find some useless crap if they wanted to...

technically its 10cm ride height and if you are below it then they are well within their job description to defect you (even though the story about the dragging child is absolute crap!).

but i wish you luck in your efforts to get back on the road...

Sorry to hear - seems lots of us having to deal with the hasstle of this lately :D

My current problem is finding a good-condition aribag GTR wheel to replace the Momo with, then finding someone to swap them over. I'm scared of setting off the airbag.

Seen a couple - but they didn't have the bags in them. No point to put in on the car then. A friend has one, but left for Japan for 2-weeks yesterday - by which time my defect will have expired.

Such a pain - I'm a busy guy. Haven't got time for this crap :)

Sorry to hear Kev. LOL @ 'its dangerous if you hit a child'. You should've said "Thankyou captian obvious!" What about bullbars? Silly cops!

Rosanna Rd is to be avoided at all costs, cops love that road coz if they don't get you for speeding (60km/hr on a main rd come on...) they get you for defects.

I have driven down Rosanna Rd at least twice a day since having my Skyline (20 months) and have never had a problem....

Love you long time Kevvy! :aroused:

sounds like you have it sorted mate.

haven't forgotten about that remote start module mate, just mad busy at the mo.

James if you need an air bag wheel then mabe the boys at j-spec can help out, email [email protected]

and :zap: you shan!!

James

That sarks big time. Man I would be one pissed chimp if they got me for my moomoo wheel. How the heck are we supposed to get an original Japanese airbag wheel within 8 working days??? Mebbe I should start looking around now before that happens to me.....

Does anyone know if you can get someone else as a 'proxy' to get your car cleared at Vicroads? I can't make it this week (unless I drive back all the way to Melbourne from Sydney!!)

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
