hi guys

wondering how long a stock r33 s2 turbo would last running 10-14psi before the turbo dies so to speak.

i know certain mods such as an after market ECU can run high boost, the mods i currently have on my dirty three are:

-greddy boost controller

-nismo full exhaust 3"

-k&n podfilter

-CENTRAL 20 ECU

-Greddy Front mount intercooler

also what probloms could occur?

How long is a piece of string? it all depends on the condition of the turbo, and no car is the same. some people probably run 14psi+ everyday without dramas (yet) and yours could last a day. 14 psi is probably the limit of the turbo if you want to flow more, get it high flowed. then you wont be warrying everytime you hit boost.

If you pull the intake pipe off & check the wheel for side play then probably not much longer, Shaft play + 100,000rpm doesnt do good things to turbines, if there is no shaft play then the bearings are ok but still is a 20yr old turbo & things dont last forever-especially when boost gets wound up.

I replaced mine with a new steel wheel version cause I was paranoid it could let go with the new demands I am placing on the car-track work/skids/drags & a lot more boost. I thought better safe than sorry

ive been told some turbos nornally last till about 150,00km?

I got the car with 71,000 on the clock-which I rekon was BS-the timing belt had been changed & looked about 50,000 used(so more likely 140K, I have now got the odo at 187,000 & the turbo wouldnt have lasted much longer I think-nearly 2mm side to side in shaft-so may last may not-if your worried about it replace it is my advice or get it reconditioned-you must be getting close too like I was

The answer truly is "how long is a piece of string".

Sure enough, if all conditions are PERFECT, it can possibly outlast the car itself. Yet when you take into consideration it is effected by SO MANY variables, its hard to put an actual lifespan on the item. One thing to note is that manufacturers GENERALLY put a 60,000km service interval on consumables (not including lubricants etc) and 100,000km on larger items.

The problems you will encounter with a blown turbo is...

No boost.

I have a S2 turbo and it has lasted more than a year of abuse on my RB20 at 14 psi. In the previous owners hands it was boosting to 18psi on a 20. Mine still feels good, minimal shaft movement.

Give it one hard drive and the chances of blowing it are high. The boost dependent death is a heat related issue, not an age one. Meaning get it hot enough at any boost level and the rear wheel is sure to hit the housing. Once that happens you can look for the wheel in the cat.

im surprised mine is still going and hasnt killed itself

but ive always kept it at 0.85kgcm2 and never use a scramble/boost mode or run "high boost" etc

set and forget and a good decent tune

my 33 turbo has done 184,000km's, it whines a bit when im cruising off boost but still boosts nice. spose its luck of the draw lol. im replacing it with a R34 gt-t turbo soon so that should be a nice quiet change =P

ive noticed that mine has been whining for a few months now....not heaps but u can definately hear something. should i assume the turbo is nearly on its way out?? or does the whine only mean there could be a small amount of shaft play? no oil leaks or anything yet...

its a series 2 with 80,000km

Technically the turbo is engineered to last the same amount of mileage as the actual engine in standard setup. I guess that doesn't work so well or there won't be any turbo re-builders.

how long do you last in bed? that varible changes from turbo to turbo man, depends on all sorts of other variables such as temperature, fuel mixture, how the car is driven, warm up, cool downs, air filter element used, fuel used... ra ra ra

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
