just wondering , i took my ECR33 down to a well known import garage and gave them what i had which was:

APEXI PFC

SARD 850cc injectors mounted on a fuel rail

NISMO fuel reg

Z32 afm

i left it all with them to fit, tune etc.

i was expecting about 2 days until i got it back all done and happy. but this is day #5 and ive just been told that they have come across some issues with the tuning and overall running of the car.

(was dropped off on Monday morning)

on wednesday they said that the injectors did not match the plugs on the standard setup so i would have to buy a wiring loom to work and would delay the tuning until they had it. so i said ok do it. so they said i would have it the next day

on thursday they call me and say they are having trouble tuning it and i will probably not get it that day. disappointed i said ok tomorrow then? they said probably friday morning. 3 hours later i get a call from them saying they cannot tune it at all. he said they tested the fuel flow from the pump and it wasnt reading properly a normal pump would be about a litre a minute and mine was 0.2 litres a minute (it was only fitted about 10 months ago and was working b4) not only that they said i do not have a sufficient boost control and is running on 10 pounds of boost. and in order to fix this they would check the fuel pump directly and see about a $80 boost valve kit (or something) but they would also have to start again!

now i was not expecting this at all. am i being lied to or ripped off, or is this a pretty common thing???

specs:

GT-RS turbo kit

front mount intercooler

splitfire coilpacks

walbro 400ps fuel pump

apexi mkII evo exhaust

That fuel pump should be pumping MUCH more than that. By my calculations, my 255lph pump flows 1L about every 15 seconds, 4.25L a minute. I believe your pump is 190lph, so that's about 3L per minute.

Have you tried dropping in to see the car? Perhaps they can show you the problem?

I cant see how it could be the workshops fault if its only pumping 0.2 LPM of fuel and the injectors dont fit the plugs.

Boost control is cruicial, so it needs to be sorted.

Tuning dosen't always go to plan! especially if the car has been messed around with before.

Like Martin says, maybe best to go see for yourself!

change your pump if its not pumping the amount of fuel you need!

walbro pumps are shit, is it a real or copy walbro?

had a mates walbro pump die on his evo (less than 6months old)

Also Sard injectors are common for not being a bolt in injector the the RB, not sure what is the issue was regarding the plugs? i know sard injectors need collars to fit.

Also the issue regarding the boost controller is correct. the GT-RS has an adjustable actuator so you can set base boost with that but then that is all you will get (i think they can go 12-16psi)

Final Also if your not happy go in pay them pick the car up and take it to another workshop but the chances are they are telling you what is going on with the car and you will get a similar responds from another workshop

i will probably go in to see it tomorrow, transport is a problem as its there and not here, i just hope i have it for the weekend and that i dont spend more than what i expected, with the things i wanted done (without the extra problems) i wanted no more than 2k but if i now have to buy a boost controller and fuel pump?

can the fuel pump shit itself on the road and still run unnoticed or has it stopped when they had it?

if anything why don't you ask if you can take your car and have it for the weekend and bring it back monday.

you fuel pump may have been dieing, but just never notice it cuz the amount of power you were running was std now that they are trying to push more power it may be showing signs of dieing

For them to come back 5 days later and say they cant do it? That's a bit unreasonable... But what there saying about the problem does sound reasonable.

Hard to know you can't do it until you come across the problems, happens alot when people drop off cars with some parts, and expect a workshop to make it all work.

OK i have it back!!

apparently the disturbance in the fuel flow was caused by cracks in the fuel pump setup 2 of the 3 valves were cracked also allowing it to lose pressure there and it was leaking fuel for about a year or more :D and the heat shrink that was sealing the wires had shrunk to the point they were fully exposed :D so i had them rip that out and put in another so the fuel was running ok. they also attached a manual boost bleed valve so they tweak the boost then it was good for the dyno again.

i rocked up just as it had finished

PROS:

i have boost again ;)

it is very responsive

i blew away a xr8 on the way home ;)

CONS:

It cost me alot more than expected ($2400)

i didnt reach the 300kw i wanted (260)

took for eva

i found dodgy work done by the last workshop (AGAIN)

they went over the quote??? $700 dyno------>> $850

missing alot of fuel

what boost were you running GT-RS is good for 350-400hp depending on supporting mods.

you should be around the 350rwhp @ 16-18 psi depending on how health your engine is.

also when you tune a car it does use fuel, hence if you come with a full tank you should pick it up with a half a tank or around that

he said it was running on a stock 10 pound

i got nowhere near what i wanted or even expected! Rap sheet here says MAX:258.9HP

i am aware that dyno does use fuel, but from full to 1\4 ?

your boost levels are no where near, were they should be. GT-RS will not start making power until 16psi anything below that is just pointless.

Get yourself a proper boost controller and put it back on the dyno and tune for more boost is you want 400hp you will need to push 20-22psi (upper limits of the turbo)

however i would aim for 350rwhp.

Also depending on how much dyno time your car needed that is normal amount of fuel, remember when its on the dyno its FULL power runs so you do use abit of fuel

i know the difference and when i learned of it i was even more disappointed 260hp is rated at 190kw

and ive been through this before i tried 1 place they stuffed up everything

tried this place, happy with the result in success but disappointed in my expectations of 300kw to only 190kw with how much ive done to it

so in conclusion i will get a boost controller likely a Greddy pro-fec and have the dyno re-done again

Also what do you guys think so far and "will" it get there

R33 GTST:

HKS GT-RS turbo

Frount mount intercooler

Splitfire coil packs

EXEDY HD clutch

APEXI PFC

NISMO adjustable fuel reg

WALBRO fuel pump

APEXI MKII Evolution dual exhaust

stainless dump and front pipe

HI-FLO cat

SARD 850CC injectors

Z32 AFM

TURBOSMART boost bleed valve

APEXI pod filter
