Are you saying that your mate has broken all of those cars?

what the hell did he do to them?

Diff mounts on every one of them, diff on two of them, 1st and 2nd gear on two of them, 2 x ZF boxes and other drivetrain components.

He drove them like you'd expect a performance Sedan/Ute should cope with. Considering these were brand new, 10yo+ Skylines shame them with regards to toughness

lol mate that is rubbish, auto f6/xr6t's have been run time and time again into the tens with stock engines, turbos and stock rear ends. even 9's. 4 spd auto was shit but the zf is a dam tuf box. manual utes have been known to break diff mounts with very rough driving, but still very rare. cv's and axle's do break but to someone with experience with last a very long time !!! your mate can't drive.

Nex question, did he get it under warranty or did he have to pay for all of it?

What utter rubbish.

Have you driven a live axle late model Falcon ute? I'd say no based on your biased crap.

Oh, and you do know my 1974 Datsun 180b has the same rear end set up as your uber-technological Commodore, don't you?

Funny enough i have as i trade them in all the time. Im not biased at all, i work for Holden but i dont own one. I would like to have a xr6 turbo or typhoon but after talking to a few techs who work on them i dont think i will. And nowhere did i state the the Commodore is " uber-technological". But why do Ford still use a live axle when majority of vehicles now can do the same thing but with a much better independant rear suspension. I do know that all the tech that is in the current model cars has been out in some form or another before. and that most 80's-90's jap cars had this stuff. But it is now available in mainstream cars that most people can afford.

And by the tone of your reply i get a feeling that im not the only one "biased"

Too much misleading info in this thread mate...

I'd take a look over here for specifics: http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/

lol specifications of the vehicles maybe, but opinions...you post this thread over there and then you'll know what misleading information is :D

Warranty jobs the whole way, through grit teeth with the last one after they agreed to the full FPV cover (in writing) to the modifications ie chip, injectors & exhaust

So in other words your mate is a total no hoper who can't drive for shit?

Of course, that's assuming you're not talking out your arse.

I'm not biased, I just think you're talking shit.

The reason the Ford still uses a live axle is because it's more than good enough for it's intended purpose. Why waste money trying to engineer a new setup into a ute only for it not to be as competent as the current setup?

If you keep an eye out you'll see every tradie on the road who actually has to carry some decent weight in a Falcon as opposed to a Commodore. There's a good reason for that. Of course many have moved up to 4x4 utes now, but there's still plenty of Falcons rolling off the floor which are destined to be genuine work horses.

And even once that's translated to the performance side of things, the benefit of IRS over live axle in a ute is so insignificant that it's simply not worth the effort or money. Have a look at the last few Brute Ute series. Factory cars with a bit of suspension and engine work punted round. The Falcons and Commodores are almost identical. In fact, the Fords have had it over the Holdens for the last few seasons, but there's not much in it.

So much for your argument that live axle is shit.

You're obviously a complete Ford fanboi (unfortunately like my mate) he's also owned 2 x XY GT replica utes (Purple and Yellow) and to be honest they've been the most mechanically tough/reliable, yet he will actually admit that the newer Falcons are soft.

I can also point you in the direction of a few forum members here who have also found the same thing with their brand new XR8's etc etc nothing to do with driving ability (I'm pretty sure he'd dominate you on a track)

Until the rest of the drivetrain is up to hauling the weight of the car under decent acceleration loads, the engine is an awesome bit of kit, orphaned in a backward car

Your mate would be an exception to the norm then. As others have said up until 370ish rwkw a BF typhoon or the xr6t with the typhoon motor (Jun 06 onwards) are very reliable. The diff bush is a common issue and there aftermarket fixes around and a manual xr6t should have its clutch done if modded and at high power the ZF fluid should be flushed every now and again.

The mods you listed - chip (hopefully you mean a flash tune) injectors and exhaust shouldnt make enough power to cause any real issues. Well unless his tuner has no idea, a good tuner will be able to adjust transmission pressures and tune the torque delivery so the box survives. A bad tuner will pull off those 'torque tags' in the tune and probably cause the dead ZF boxes.

Either your mate and/or his tuner is an idiot if he's wrecked that many. That's not to say his tuner doesnt work well on other cars but he might not be up to date on the ford tuning scene.

driving ability has little to do with the damage to the cars. he might be able to lap around a track fast, but if he spends all of his time on the street limiter bashing, flooring it everytime he takes off, manually changing the auto box, and just generally raping the car then he is going to blow shit up no matter what car he has. he would be the type of person who if he had a 33 would have blown the stock turbo and possibly even the engine.

I'm not a fanboi of anything. You're talking shit and trying to write me off as a Fanboi isn't going to hide that fact.

You can try and be sure of anything you like, but you're mate can't drive for shit and you're full of it.

How often would a LEMON car become involved in it?

hyperthetically it wouldn't be feasible to say that, the guy that has fked all those cars could they have all been lemons? stranger things have happened right? lol

That's wierd, my XR8 is supercharged and the ZF is fine.

Wow you are an angry little boy arent you. Aren't forums meant to be all about someones opinion. Just because you disagree with someone doesnt make them an idiot. One reason why you see a lot of tradies in falcon utes is due them being able to put an alloy tray on the back. Holden dont allow that anymore but if they did you would see the same amount of holden's out there.

But wait you will disagree with this and call me an idiot as well

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
