My car blows fireballs the size of a car so i dont think its running lean,

I backed the boost off to around 16psi from 22 to control the heat, it was stupid hot at winton this weekend. It did make a difference, as it should.

Very low timing will result in excessive exhaust heat. It will cause the thing to run really hot, ping earlier than it should when trying to run more boost (capping power) and will also make it get on boost quicker.

I have had a setup tuned like this and am speaking from experience. The car got on boost fine and when/where expected (if not earlier) but the power delivery wasnt right.

No cat, does have a straight through muffler and a res though,

The AFR's were a little rich on the dyno, not heaps just a little to be safe, from memory they were around low 12's high 11's i think. I'm pretty tired from the weekend, i could be wrong i will check later today gonna go see my tuner.

Then yeah could also be timing as above

When you say low timing to you mean advanced or retarded?

The car had around 40-50 on the knock. Nothing drastic.

My car had numbers lower than 10. The tuner couldnt dial in more because the boost was too high straight off the actuator. If we had a lower pressure actuator it would have been a different story.

Is this hitting any points with your setup? whats the lowest boost you can run and did your tuner go all out on the tune with low boost first?

My understanding is the best way to tune works like this: Start with the lowest boost possible and most aggressive tune, slowly wind the boost in and soften the tune as you go.

Rather than get fueling right then add boost and slowly add timing - doesnt work.

I don't think my timing was any lower than 10. Pretty certain it was all higher than 10

We didn't completely reset the boost. Lowered it too around 14psi and went from there. I blew the gearbox on the weekend so once I get it back together, next year, we'll put it back on the dyno to check it again before I buy another 3540 and sell the Kando.

Not giving up yet, i wanna get back on the dyno and have a little more of a play, but i dont think that will change when the turbo spools up and starts running out of legs.

out of curiousity what turbo are you running? what size rear? how much power are you making?

Mook what state are you in? Maybe send your rear housing to Stao (Hypergear) and see if says theres a problem with it.

He stocks these turbos too at the moment. He will be able to directly compare yours to one of his 10cm's and also be able to check for defects. If its not right he can supply you the new housing.

I'm in Victoria, Hypergear is in too melb isnt he?

I'll be able to go see him first, that way i might use a little less time playing on the dyno.

FROSTY, I was a bit disappointed when we tuned it, though its not so much about how much power it made as when and how its making it, very early and seems to run out of legs at high revs, let alone the heat issue.

see to me doesnt seem right! are you sure you got delivered the right turbo??!

do you have a dyno sheet i can look at?

    • The powder coating came in at $250 EACH. The TRX rims got a coat of clearcoat on the outside only.
    • Bit wet, but YUMMY
    • Keeping in mind that I am currently getting flat 10 L/100km on my RB25DET, which means >>500km/tank. I would test this car for vacuum leaks, check codes and AFM signal with NissDataScan as D says, check plugs, do a compression check while they are out.
    • It is hard to be specific half way across the world...but it *seems* like it might have a minor issue. Is the idle stable and does it rev smoothly? I would not expect any pops out of what I am assuming is a standard ECU, standard tune, standard exhaust. You can use Nissan Data Scan to find out exactly what is happening when it runs, the cable/software is reasonably affordable if you are not planning on changing the ECU (which hopefully you are not with an NA skyline) BTW your mileage may not be that far off, these are heavy old tech cars, and being NA might mean you use a heavy foot to keep up with traffic....
    • Hey guys! Y'all are the masters so figured I'd check in on a few items here. - My engine sounds ever-so-slightly more raspy than the other NA RB25s I've listened to. It's barely noticeable but definitely a slightly different sound. - When I back off the throttle at high RPM, I will sometimes get a pop out of the exhaust, assuming this can be diagnosed as misfire. Some history on the car: - Had an exhaust leak in auction sheet but was claimed to be fixed by seller (bought from USA importer).  - Car's coil packs and sparks were replaced when it was sold to me, but unsure on what the gap is and whether the coil packs are correct.  - A prior mechanic had misdiagnosed a pilot or throwout bearing sound as LSPI/detonation. Had played with timing a bit, pops/raspy sound of engine just got worse. Got timing reset. - Had failed emissions a few times. First time went in as is, failed. Second time, replaced cat, still failed, running rich as hell. Third time replaced o2 sensor, passed. Car still smells gassy though. - Timing belt and valve cover gasket also replaced.  - Gas mileage is... low. about 350-400K per tank.  Any idea if I'm having any serious issues here or does this all sound like normal old NA RB stuff and I'm fine to drive it with the pops/slightly raspy engine? If it'll help, I can get drop a video of the sound of the engine.
