2 spoolimports oil drain kits just arrived.

Looking on line, and this site i saw people placing the return on the right and some on the left front side of the oil pan. Witch side should i place the return line, looking at the engine from the front.?????

ok, my old GTR i ran the oil drain to the rear turbo oil return on the passenger side as i was running a single turbo and had a spare oil drain spot,

on my current GTR i have the oil drain running to the drivers side and have a fitting welded into the sump. both setups work however i noticed that the oil return on the passenger side made my engine breath a little heavier

but it looks like i will be placing it on the left with a weld in fitting, after i installed restrictor and drill out head and block oil return gallaries. to much oil in the head has plagued me for a long time and this build i will get on top of it

You have to hook it into the turbo oil drain hose. I have this kit on my car, just need to hook the hose in and i'll be sweet

I believe your thinking of the driver side return because odds are if you bought the spool drain kit, they bought the spool sump ( im referring to your info that you looked up). I gave spool a buzz and asked about this drain return. I was told its just a "generic oil return"

what i mean is the engine seemed to have blowby once i fitted the rear drain to the passenger side, basically the oil return does return oil from the head to the sump but it also is a passage for crankcase pressure to make its way back up to the head.

This is interesting!

I had them set up on the driver side on my other builds but figured on my current build to try on the pass side or both pass side driver side thinking that the cranks rotation would help the drain flow as the crank spins clock wise if looking at the front of the engine. Did you notice this from a before and after or was there other things to consider with your build when you did your drain?

Thinking if it were on the driver side of the sump the rotation of the crank would not help the drain drain the oil into the sump. kind of a total reverse to what your saying.

i rebuilt my RB26 in my last GTR, then found out about all of the oil control issues, so i stripped it back down, got the crank collar done(but left pistons in the cylinders), fitted oil restrictor, new tomei pump, rear oil drain from the head,

and since i put it back in it was breathing heavier

put it back on the shelf.... doesn't do much, been covered heaps of times.

I pulled the return off ours and ran it into a coke bottle and.... well nothing happened.

Can you elaborate on this status? Was this tested on the track with G forces involved or on the dyno? My car has no issues at all on the dyno with blow by. On the track is a totally different story.

I will be pulling my motor out soon as I have waaay too much oil in the head. I have a 1.5mm restrictor and a Reimax pump that is currently regulated to 120psi @ anything above 3000rpm. My play is to drop the pressure to around 75-85psi max. I was also going to put a head drain in, but I figure reducing the flow by 30-40% should make a profound impact on the amount of blow by.

For the record all oil returns should be on the passenger side due to crank induced vacuum. Just as factory have designed it.....having said that a 2J is the other way around.....

I read the entire oil thread. Seems to be a 50/50 on people who think that it is a drain or a vent. Regardless, if not doing the rear drain then the sump should still vent via the separator/catch tank. With all the heated debate, I am just going to install two -10an fittings on each side of the sump above oil level. Then, conduct my own tests and use what I believe works better. Find out if its draining under load or helping the engine breath better. That way I have a drain/vent for the head and the primary catch tank and conclude what side is more appropriate once I find out if its a drain or not.

but did you run it for 5 minutes at 6000rpm for the test?

if you want a vent from the bottom end, venting via the dipstick would make a lot more sense than sending it to the head, then out the breathers.

because you need at least a -10 hose for it to be effective. you are completing an air circuit which is how the engine was designed. vacuum and pressure in different areas assisting the oil to be pushed back to the pan and pick-up. Sending it to the rear of the head the pressure has to travel along the camshafts before entering the cam baffles and out the head. This helps the factory oil drains do their job.

how do you train the air to go up the hose but not go up the drains? sounds tricky.

I know the other thread has been done to death....but if you put a hose high in the head, eg in the welsh plug, of course you are over the oil level and it won't drain oil.

Do it properly (large drain, and at the bottom of the head) and I sure it would work properly.

But in 99% of cars it is a moot point...they aren't working hard enough to make a difference.

    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies. 
    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.  
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it  
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
