just wondering how many ,close to rev limit launches, or on the limiter, a standard r33 GTR box will handle.

its in an r32 GTR with an os giken triple plate clutch, and 330 kw atw.

i recently started going to the strip and love it, but just wondering if the gearbox will survive.

cheers

mate its hard to say on these type of things, some could last forever and some could go on your first (depending on km's and alot of other factors) give it regular services and try for second gear lanuches, your syncros will die first usally folowed by first gear, its just like asking how long will a engine last if i limiter bash it, could be years or days, all depends on previous wear.

man.... ive had my gtr for 2 years. 312kw ive done a nite a the drags. and about 100 limiter dumps on the street!! see my sig!!!

they love it hahaha

how long is your string?

your unlikely to break 1st gear, but stuff will wear out, clutches, syncros, transfer case etc, being a 32, are you launching 4wd ?

I would've launched 1st in my last R33 GTR up around a couple hundred times in a few years with no gearbox issues, just a few clutches.. however did smash the gearbox dropping 2nd while rolling..

anyway just go for it, you probably spend more on clutches than gearboxes

my bad, was going off my experience with my rwd not awd, theres no need near redline drop anyways, just get yourself a launch controller activated by handbrake and find the sweet spot rpm just before it will break traction

I'm into the hundreds of launches in my race car.

the most important thing is not to shock it by dropping the clutch cold.

just before launching put the handbrake on and let the clutch out a little to put the drivetrain under load. when the light goes out, drop the handbrake, drop the clutch, floor the throttle and watch it go.

cheers guys,

not so worried now after hearing that,

might just give it hell, and see how long it lasts.

is there any cheapish ways of making them stronger, i have looked at the OS Giken gear sets, and others, but they are so expensive, and the car isnt that powerful. ??

plus its only a street car!!!

standard box should be fine, just do what Duncan said and pre-load the drive train,

I think the high rev launch is more to not bogging rather than breaking traction...

yep by the looks of the OP's sig he's got a big single, I'm the same, launch any lower than 7krpm and it just bogs down.

get it right and ------

right you are!!!!

anything under 7000-7500 and it bogs down. high boost (1.5 bar)

low boost bogs even nearer to rev limit. (1 bar)

high rpm launch in the wet with lots of wheel spin.

Here's a good one;

Very nice. I still dont quite get the perfect launching technique with the GTR though. Everyone seems to tell me to dump it at around 6500-7000 but this thread says 1/2 clutch with handbrake.

yeah anywhere between 6500--limiter, the handbrake is just to load up the drivetrain before you launch.. on the line put on handbrake in 1st gear, let clutch out a little so it pushes against the handbrake, then clutch back in, handbrake off, don't let car roll back and drivetrain is loaded..right foot down and step off clutch..hang on..:woot:

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
