hi guys,

i was gonna install a fcd to my skyline but have been talked out of it and told to use a nistune chip and tune everything properly, as they are better for the engine and still relatively cheap. who has one of these chips?? and if anyone has any advise like wether i should try one of them or just spend the extra money and get a pfc??

would b great for a little help and cheers in advance

www.nistune.com It would be cheaper if you ordered it and had someone you know who is good at micro soldering to install the daughterboard. Otherwise a workshop can do all the work of installing it and tuning it. Even with the workshop ordering it, installing and tuning it, it would still end up cheaper than buying the PFC and tuning the PFC.

but if money wasnt an issue out of the two, which would you go for? Just thinking about it from a logical point it seems that a complete aftermarket ecu would be much better then a piggyback style ecu? no?

what are you reasons?

even if money is no object nistune would generally be a better option for a street car. its not a piggyback, yes it retains the standard ecu but modifies it so its fully programmable, the benefits of this are it looks 100% stock and you retain all the factory cold start and idle features which the power fc isnt as good at.

When you say its better for street car because of it looking 100% stock, retaining factory features ect. What about in terms of tunability? would you say the nistune falls behind the PFC in this situation?

for someone like me who dosnt care about the stuff you mentioned but just wants the most of the setup, making big numbers while keeping the midrange nice and phat, whats your input?

I would say speak to your tuner. End of the day, they are the ones tuning it, and that's what determines how good it is.

pfc doesn't have a knock map

so if for some reason your car is detonating you blow your engine.

Only good if the tuner adjusts the knock maps though. Seen a few people have issues where the knock map is left standard (or just copied from the tuned map), engine knock, ECU switches to knock map and it either does nothing or reverts to stock :wacko:

Knock maps are not yet available on most nistune ecu's.

Therefor knock maps are best to be copied from the tuned map. The tuned map should be tuned so there is no knock anyway and "shouldnt" be on the limit of knock.

For a street car i would recommend nistune.

For a car that see's the circuit i would prefer power fc or any other ecu with injector trim to help keep the back cylinders of the motor alive.

Unfortunately nistune doesnt offer this at the moment.

Agreed a car shouldn't be on the limit of deto. However if a fuel pump was dieing and you were getting low fuel pressure or you dropped off a waste gate line and you were free boosting. lost of different things can cause knock and can happen while your driving it as well

    • neither stumble or cut really seem to be an appropriate term....hard to explain its like a rev limiter but at 4k, but it violently shakes engine and entire vehicle as the rpms will not rise over 4k, even with slow acceleration. as soon as it hits 4k, it sounds like entire spark is lost entirely. plugs were 1.1 which I used as such, but later put in new plugs gapped down to .8 changed back after issue arose when I replaced the coils, still does it with either plug gap...damn and it was all running so good.
    • Oh how times have changed! I actually lean it out relative to my water/methanol injector duty cycle. The methanol adds a lot of fueling and you can then lean it out even more due to reduced knock. 
    • Yeah my thoughts are the same, a well thought out WMI setup, would be slightly ahead of just straight E85 and you're also chemically intercooling the charged air, dropping it even further. This is why you need to add so much more fuel as soon as you spray. I remember someone taking me through their set up before (Dennis, has a R33, lives around Cabramatta - no idea if he's still around on this forum). He would target AFR 10:1 on 98, then as WMI ramped on, AFR would lean back up to 11:1. Amazingly, he did this all through his PowerFC, a relay to cut power to his EBC solenoid if there was not enough line pressure on his WMI kit. And of course, if there wasn't any boost made above gate pressure, you wouldn't be accessing the load cells with heaps of timing for WMI. One downside to that rudimentary setup, once the WMI came on, the EBC would unleash the dragon, and of course all the timing. Tyres would fry lol.
    • Shimmed or shimless, still solid, no hydraulic pump up stuff.
    • They have said food will be limited. Mainly meat pies and sausage rolls from memory. But they have a coffee van!
