Curious to know what race fuels people have tried. Back in the dark ages when I had my R1 and when i first got my R32 it was common practice to try toluene, or the Shell 100 leaded fuel you could get from servos. But its been years since I have bene to EC or Wakefield and did that.

When i first got to Melb i used to throw 10L of Sunoco in with 35L of 98 to give the engien some knock prevention when it was hot on the track.

Looking around some websites this morning I am wondering if anyone can give some feedback on the following:

So interested to know of people have tried any of the above as 100% tune or as 50% mixes with 98?

From all accounts I've heard the ET 102 is pretty good, and cheaper than the ELF Turbomax or whatever they call it.

Off the top of my head its rated in the US system so it would be 102 MON which would shit on the local 100 RON brews.

Have you considered WMI as a knock preventative?

We used to use sunoco in the r32 GTR

It worked well when the tune was right but we did melt a few pistons in hot temperatures. Once the tune was right it ran happily.

We did run up an rb26 on an engine dyno running on a toluene blend. I don't know the ratio but it did not make much more power than 98.

yeah I say run the E85 bris. it will give you more power, and doesn't cost a bomb either.

russ used to run the sunoco stuff but switched to E85. I've run with the Elf LMS (and turbomax) in robs GT3 and we used to use it in the alfa too. it was pretty good we certainly got a few more hp out of the alfa but it was so bloody expensive. talking over $5.50 a litre and that was 5 years ago and at the time we could get 'optimax extreme' which was the shell 100RON brew for like $1.50 so eventually we went back to that.

I'm spewing as shell don't do the 100ron anymore and even united near me don't do united 100 any more either as I guess they sell E85 now. I'm going to move to that.

yeah I'm with marlin. I only even ran the stuff when I got scraps cheap/free when we were running the porsche GT3 cup car. and same goes in the alfa. I think these days the elf LMS is up around $8+ per litre. even when we got it for $5.50 rob's fuel bill for a weekends racing was astronomical. E85 is the only real viable solution. well actually there is one other. avgas. if you get your car log-booked you can get a fuel passport and can then buy avgas for your car. last time I bought it (they sell it at eastern creek from a tanker) it was $2.50 per litre (from memory). much more reasonable and good gain over 98RON.

When we ran the GTR at Tugga in 2008, we were bound to use Elf as thats what that car, and most of the period, were tuned on. We obviously relied on a 3rd party to fill us roadside, and I remember turning to Tim several times during that week and asking if he was enjoying himself, because that fuel top-up just cost us $500.

We used over 600 litres for the event..... at $8.50 per litre. Seems like madness now, but back then, we all used to just accept it.

From what I understand the Shell Racing 100RON is just avgas with a government tax slapped on it...

I have been trying to decide what fuel to run in my car aswell, kind of leaning towards running leaded avgas.

Blue = 100/110 low lead (not unleaded, low lead)

Green = 100/130 leaded

Red/pink = Mogas / Shell Racing 100

It smelt good... in a funny carcinogenic kinda way.. although it got a bit worrying when we realised it was burning 2 litres per competitive km

Main reason I was going to try Martini or Sunoco first was to get some good quality gerry cans that will seal up well and able to sit in the boot of the car in the garage. But will have to try and hunt down some from a client instead if the E85 is the way to go...actually.

yeah elf LMS smells wildly different to the other unleaded race fuels i've used and it is massively carcinogenic and it burns your skin too. lovely.

avgas is not exactly good for you either and is leaded but cost vs benefit it's pretty good. the elf's big advantage is how highly oxygenated it is. can make great power with it. but yeah the price is out of this world.

kind of smells like a fruity paint thinner.

    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack. 
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
    • OK, if it idles at 1000+ with the AAC, its not an idle airflow problem. The cold start valve just gives extra air when the engine is cold, but you have enough air without it to idle at 1000. I think you are back to a fuel problem, sorry. Can you see the fuel pressure staying constant or does it drop as the revs drop to a stall?
